Forgot My Laptop

September 16, 2008 @ 16:32

Actually, I forgot my wife's laptop.

It's what I use at the tin palace to update FreddieP.ca, but when I left the brick palace yesterday morning I drove away without it.

That's good for Delyse, because now she gets to curl up in her cosy little bed and surf the net at night. When I have the laptop she misses those moments.

Anyway, that's the deal, but it's OK. Between the radio bits that I do over the next couple of days and the odd thing that I can post from the fabulous radio studios of Corus Entertainment, I should be able to make it through the week before my little darlin' arrives on Thursday night with my/her/our laptop.

Meanwhile, if there are any FreddieP.ca readers out there that would like to write a guest posting for the site, feel free to e-mail me with a picture that I can attach to it.

You got it, ya buggers.

I Am Not Stan Butler

September 10, 2008 @ 12:19

Yesterday was an interesting day on the job. I had my first ever morning show meeting where I wasn't one of the morning show guys.

Jay Sharpe is the morning man at The Wolf and he's a sharp young fella who will be a lot of fun to work with over the next few months. We're gonna do some great stuff.

In the early afternoon I took part in my first music meeting with three guys who are so dedicated the radio station it's downright inspirational. Brian Ellis, Carey Walker and Scott Hanes showed me some neat stuff about moving songs from one category to another, or bloody well leaving them alone.

Later on, station manager Brian Armstrong hosted a meet and greet at a local Peterborough Mexican restaurant and it was quite enjoyable.

Not only was I interviewed by CHEX -TV, but I got to meet CHEX-TV legend sportscaster Gary Dalliday. (picture above)

Not to age the guy, but he's been doing sports on CHEX-TV since I was a high school kid in Scarborough. Gary's a great guy with a lot of great stories and he's very proud of his son Pete, who's the voice of the Peterborough Petes on 980 Kruz.

As a matter of fact, the Peterborough Petes feature a unique situation in broadcasting because Pete does the play-by-play and Gary does the colour. Pretty cool.

When I first met Gary yesterday, he greeted me with the same thing I get quite often in Brampton. He told me I looked like Stan Butler, coach of the Brampton Battalion.

The Battalion is Brampton's entry in the OHL and he's the only coach they've had in their history. He's pretty popular guy in Brampton and that's mean I become pretty popular when I walk into stores and restaurants.

Countless times people have said to me, "are you Stan Butler?" It happened so many times over the years that finally, a while back, I produced this short video entitled, "I am not Stan Butler."

Day One

September 9, 2008 @ 07:03

I have to be honest when I arrived back at the trailer last night I was exhausted. The first day of my new job as Program Director of the Wolf and Kruz in Peterborough was wild.

I made a point of trying to talk to everyone in the building, at least for a few minutes, and yakking for close to eight straight hours can take a lot out of a guy.

I'm not complaining because actually being in a radio station as an employee was not only satisfying, it was of great relief.

Man oh man, I love this business and while I walked through the doors yesterday morning, I thought of something Iain Grant said to me last Thursday.

"There's nothing worse than sitting in the foyer of a radio station, waiting for an interview, while other people breeze by you with their pass cards. Those people are on the "inside" working in the business they love, while you're not, and it sucks."

Today I took a deep breath before I entered the station, and sucked up the atmosphere as I walked through the foyer and right into my office.

It's a great bunch in Peterborough, and they've made me feel so welcome it's almost embarrassing. I'm just a knob from Brampton, but to these people treat me like 28 years in Toronto radio actually means something. I'm humbled and flattered and thankful.

It's going to be a lot of fun working with a talented people, building on a radio station that leads the market and hopefully will continue to do so under my direction.

Yesterday was a case of information overload but I took lots of notes and today's primary job will be to remember all the names I learned from yesterday.

I can do it. I know I can.

The SOWNY Show

September 9, 2008 @ 07:01

Last night, from the comfort of my tin palace, I received a call from the fellas who do the SOWNY Show.

SOWNY is a radio board that features some decent people but also a bunch of skunks and weasels.

Most people in radio claim they don't read this board, but they do.

Sometimes you can't help it, because as nice as it is to have decent people say stuff about you, the big attraction seems to be the crap written by the skunks and weasels.

I can't explain it, that's just the way it is.

Anyway, a guy named Craig Smith is the moderator and he asked me if I'd come on his internet radio show with co-host Don Andrews, and because I like to think of myself as something other than a prick, I said yes.

To be honest, it was actually quite fun. Go here and click on the SOWNY Show in the left hand column. The show segment should be posted some time today.
