Who Done It

September 24, 2011 @ 08:47

It would be great if the city of London could find out who threw the banana on the ice at the John Labatt Centre Thursday night.

You've probably heard the story by now, Wayne Simmonds of the Philadelphia Flyers, one of the few black players in the NHL had the banana thrown in his path during the shootout. He scored anyway. Good for him.

It was either a coincidence or a racist act but when you play the law of averages what are the chances of it being a coincidence? Zilch.

It was a despicable act by a despicable person. I'm sure you've met one somewhere along the way. I have. Several. They're the type who moves out of Brampton because there are too many brown faces in their kids school pictures.

They don't like their gracious East Indian neighbours on the right, but tolerate the big mouth white guy on the left who always seems to have his car up on blocks.

They absolutely hate curry, even though they've never tried it. You get the picture.

I hope they find out who threw the banana for a couple of reasons. First of all to embarrass the asshole (if that's possible) and secondly so the city of London can deal with it.

As it stands the city looks bad. This story has made news all over the world now and it's not really what you'd expect out of a Canadian city let alone an affluent community like London.

This is the type of stuff that happens in the States, or so we think. But more and more that's not the case. You'd think that the more diverse a community becomes the more tolerant people become because they get used to it.

Call me a dreamer.

There could be one saving grace in this for London. They might find out that the culprit was a Wings fan from Michigan. It would lessen the blow for the community, but it would still be a sad statement on mankind.

Having said that, it would be nice if someone who was sitting near this loser would come forward. I'm sure there were a few Londoners in that group.

I'd love this creep to be caught and then I'd love to ask him a few questions. Like why?
Is in black people in general who you think are apes, or is it just hockey players?
Is it OK for black people to play baseball and football? Would you throw a banana at them?
Was this pre-meditated or do you usually bring fruit to hockey games?

Of course I would ask this serious of questions while attempting to control the urge to slap the bastard upside the head.

And there would be one last question.

Did you not have any regard for the feelings for Wayne Simmonds, how it might affect him, embarrass him or hurt him?

But that's probably the best part of this whole story. Wayne Simmonds handled it with class and intelligence. He handled it like a man.

A lot more than we can say about the unidentified scum bag who was lurking in the upper deck.

I would better large sums of money that the ass hole that was under 22 years old and is attending school .There is something about this age group 16-25 that believe its OK to say and anything with out recourse. These are the first kids that have grown up under the soccer mum regime that swept through this country in the 90s

It's sad that in this day and age with what has gone on in the world that we still have people that leave their brain at home, come out in public and act like jerks.

Too bad he wasn't still attached to the banana when he threw it onto the ice.....

A few people on twitter have mentioned that the banana throwing culprit was seen getting into a car in the parking lot with Michigan licence plates. If there's any consolation, it was a shitty act done on our soil but not one of our own.

The culprit was from Peel region.

Nope, from Michigan.

I hope the next time Steve Nash is at the foul line in Philly someone throws a twinkie at him!
What would the take be if that happened - non story.
I agree with your Brampton/EI take Fred, however I live in the same racial dynamics in Surrey BC, and in fact the reverse racism is worse than White/Brown - do the EI have their own soccer league, with funds from the city which exludes whites from playing? We do in Surrey - now that is a story.

I am an old white guy living in London and you know me Fred. You know I am not a racist or prejudice.

Although I do not condone throwing anything, anytime, during a sporting event I do have to say that in all honesty when I first saw the clip I did not notice the colour of Simmonds' skin.

Because I didn't I did not go for the race slant but instead thought of all the old slap stick shows, comedians, cartoons and movies I have seen in the past about slipping on a banana peel. (I was thinking it was a shootout, a one on one and so somebody was looking for a slip.) After everyone started to point out the race insult I admit I had to rethink the incident. But could it still have been just a "slip on a banana peel" bad joke? Can we also try and find the culprit and crucify him first instead of heaping blame for his actions on me and others who live here in London? I assure you I wasn't even in town that day.

I don't know what's more shocking; the fact that someone had the gull to commit such a racist act like throwing a banana on the ice like that, or that Simmonds never picked it up and ate it.

"This is the type of stuff that happens in the States, or so we think."

And equally malicious stereotype. I thought you were above that, Fred.

Stupid/classless act? For sure. Racist? I highly doubt it. The jerk in question would have had to: plan way ahead that the only black player would be virtually alone on the ice at some point (highly unlikely); then to choose something to throw at him that would somehow connote a racial slur. Dumb asses aren't really that good at planning ahead. And besides, I don't even associate bananas and black people. Do you? The black people I know eat a lot more melons and mangoes than bananas. If someone had thrown an apple at a white Canadian player would we assume that it was a black guy making a racial slur? Come on. It was just a moron doing a moron thing. To make the leap to racism just ain't supported by the facts.

Gotta say Freddie, I agree with Anonymous. Stereotype either way. Gotta love Keith's comment too - "a shitty act done on our soil but not by one of our own." I guess I didn't think US - Canada relations had stooped to Israel - Palestine levels. Just sayin.

@Anonymous and Johnny
You're right guys, there's no history of systemic racism in the States. Their history of blatant racism is just something I dreamed up.

Perhaps I can make a lot of money in the stock market. All I have to do is look at stocks that did well at one time in the past and buy them today.
Lumping in the States in a back handed slap for that type of this in today's world is poor form (to be polite).
The past is the past. Tomorrow will be different. Learn from the mistakes and move on to a better tomorrow by making change today. Expecting the future to be like the past is just perpetuating the problems.
It doesn't matter where that happened. The goal should be to stop it from the future.
Whether you decide it was a moron doing a stupid thing, or premeditated racism, it really doesn't matter. It was simply wrong to do.

Well put Anonymous. Freddie, just thought I would provide the English language definition of systemic: "Pertaining to or affecting the body as a whole." So I guess we are all racist in America. Maybe it translates differently in French.

@johnny boy - call it a stereotype or whatever you want, but we north of the border have always been known to show a little more class whatever the situation may be than those to the south. #fact

Johnny Boy
September 25, 2011 / 09:48

Yep, lots of class up North. Always better than us at everything. Those that have to point out they have more class are usually those with the least. Especially those that need to post as others....

We find him and then what? a public stoning?

I recall a year or two ago a minor hockey league coach pulled his team because one of his players was subjected to racial taunts from the opposing team. That coach faced a suspension and dismissal for his actions. It was only after a public outcry was the coach's job saved. If we cant get it right at these early stages why should we expect anything different in the later stages?

We got to move on. This fool is getting more recognition than he deserves.

Racism is everywhere. I've been racially abused, along with some colleagues, by an African-American lady who was hired by a firm I was working for training us! Indians discriminate amongst each other, based on where they are from. Wherever you go in this world, there are racists. But I hope that jerk gets his ass kicked but some true hockey fans!

I agree-- too much attention -- to a moron. There are bad people out there...biggots , racists, and they are all shapes , sizes, religions, races, colours, countries...and on. The banana dude probably [maybe] isn't a bad person in many other ways. But what he did was reflective of deeper issues among some of us. In this act he presents himself as a slower line of evolution.

It appears that Wayne Simmonds is no better than the banana tosser, with his gay slur against Steve Avery.

Fred love your blog Its a shame this banana skin has got stretched out of shape! No body seems to know for sure if it was a racist action or not , but you certainly as the rest of the media has jumped on the band wagon! In your rant you stereotyped typical white people in Brampton with car parts all over their driveways, and other intolerant whites fleeing their homes because of the increased asian population. Well we know who you are you should be ashamed of yourself. Im sick and tired of all thiscrap talk join the club FRED!

@Moose Factor and lace wigs.
Nice try, but work on your comprehension - I said this "It was a despicable act by a despicable person. I'm sure you've met one somewhere along the way. I have. Several. This is not a stereotype, "it is people I have met" did you not get that part?

Moose Factor
September 29, 2011 / 21:31

Dress it up however you like, its still a stereotype! Please look it up in the dictionary. Your description of these white people in Brampton is like me saying the east indian guy who has his entire extended family living with him, noisy comings and goings 24 hrs a day with 8 cars parked not only in the driveway but across the sidewalk and on the street either side of the driveway! This is not a stereotype," it is people i have met" CRAP KA KA ! Never the less the guy is still despicable IF it is proven that he threw racial Banana parts. Cheers
