What Am I Missing Here?

Today's story about the Canadians stranded in Paris left me shakin' my less than attractive head.

As you start to read the story about 200 Canadians stranded at Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris on Monday you prepare yourself for a living nightmare. Terms like "hostage taking" are actually used to describe the delays attached to a Sunwing flight that ran into hydraulic problems.

Hey shit happens, especially when you want the cheapest flight available so you opt for a cattle bin charter that offers nothing but a narrow seat.

Yes, 36 hours is a long time to be delayed, but when I read the headlines and the first couple of paragraphs I was under the impression these people were shoved into a room and forgotten about for a day and a half.

But that's not the case. Sunwing not only provided meal vouchers, they also provided hotel rooms and transportation back and forth. Really, they did about all they could do given the circumstances.

But that wasn't enough for the whiners, bitchers and complainers.

One group that travelled together refused a hotel because some boys would have to stay in the same room as some girls. They thought they were entitled to two rooms.

It makes you appreciate how coddled and pampered we are in this country and our great sense of entitlement.

Sunwing not only offered total refunds to those who wanted them, they offered to give the same amount in future travel vouchers.

Nope, not good enough.

Don't get me wrong, if this delay had happened and the passengers "were" forced to stay in the terminal it would have been a whole other story. But that wasn't the case.

A hydraulic system had to be flown in from London and then it was lost for a few hours and the airline, accepting full responsibility did absolutely everything they could for those who were inconvenienced.

For this to make major news in Canada, and be described as a "hostage taking" solidifies what we all should know.

What a great country we live in.

Sunwing did the classy and the RIGHT thing for these stranded people, yet, as so true in life, classy is usually followed by class-less... suck itup babies... you could have to walk home!

I agree with you Fred. I was scrathing my head after reading the headline, and then the article. What the hell else could Sunwing do? Given it is a budget airline these folks got treated rather well. I have had worse treatment with AC. They stranded me in Kelowna for 24 hours and gave me 500 air miles for my trouble and that is it.

These delays are a part of travel. They should be expected; they ARE expected by an experienced traveller.

If any of these pinheads actually read the terms and conditions of their ticket, and understood the terms and conditions of international travel (IATA rules) they would realize that the carrier is not obligated IN ANY WAY to make amends, monetary or otherwise. Unfortunately, some people are too stupid to recognize what they don't know, as are some news reporters and news editors.

This reminds me of being stuck on the GO Train once, late at night because someone had jumped in front of the train. I was in the first car and felt the bump underneath. I couldn't believe the bitching, moaning and complaining from the people on the train. A guy died for Christ's sake. I pitied the people that were having to search for the body parts before they could move the train. Then later we were all standing on the platform waiting for another train because the one we were on was being taken out of commission and the engineer walked by. He looked like he would never be the same again. And people were yelling out that they were going to sue. I was disgusted.
