Good Job Jack

August 22, 2011 @ 14:58

I'm not going to get too slobbery over this thing because after the fact, and given what I've written and said about Jack Layton in the past, it wouldn't hold much water.

But I will repeat what I said about Jack when he held that press conference a few weeks to ago to talk about his latest bout with cancer; he was a unique man.

I didn't like or agree with his politics, but I truly admired his tenacity and commitment to his cause.

No doubt, cancer is a prick and can be ugly monster. Whatever got a hold of Jack must have been a special kind of ugly, because it beat one hell of a fighter.

RIP Jack.

Agree with your comments Freddie. No person or family should have to go through this. I feel for his family.
But in the end Jack was a liar like most other politicians. He wasn't proven to be a liar because he would have never been elected to fulfill his crazy promises. But then again that's politics.
RIP Jacky boy.

Sorry to see Jack off to a better place. Man that was fast, one day we were cheering Jack off to another election then the next we were sending Jack off to God's hands.

@"Speyside Phil" now thats what I call stomping a good man when he's down and out, literally. Hey, didn't expect much of a different response from most of the yahoo's that frequent this blog.

This isn't the day to praise or rip the man's policies. (And I say this as someone who repeatedly tore into him on the radio in the '80s when he was a Toronto councillor). But he never held that against me and we had some intriguing chats over beers in the intervening years. He was the most down-to-earth politician I ever met, a "regular guy" if you will. The only thing I want to rip today is that God damned disease. I was lucky enough to beat it but have lost a warehouse full of fine folks who didn't. Fuck you, cancer.

August 22, 2011 / 17:44

Speyside Phil, the man's not in his grave yet,and you have both feet stomping on his grave.

You're juat a classless act who needs to keep his mouth shut if thats the best you can say about a man trying to make a difference!!

RIP Jack

Phil I hope your tong was firmly placed in your cheek because if not your head must be up your ass

You didn't have to like Jacks politics but you sure as hell had to like Jack
RIP Jack Canada will miss you

Very sad day.
Kudos to you Fred for being classy about it all.

August 22, 2011 / 22:34

Jack was the rare politician who appeared to care about all Canadians convincingly.

August 23, 2011 / 09:17

Hey Fred, I remember at one time you and Humble became members of the NDP because of Jack. It was a great radio bit. Are you still a member? :-)

Mike and Clyde I didn't stomp all over the man. I just gave my opinion on his policies. Most politicians will say and promise anything to win. That was Jack!

Buster, I didn't like his policies and I didn't have to like the man! I should like him because he's a great guy to have a beer with??

August 23, 2011 / 10:57

@Phil, nobody's saying you have to like him. It's just that this is not the time or forum to tell everybody you didn't like him. It's self serving, insensitive, and unnecessary. So yes, you did 'stomp' on him, whether you realized it or not.

I know, I shouldn't be feeding the troll.

August 23, 2011 / 12:06

Jack took many a bashing on this blog, but we were all shooting at fish in a barrel. He just became more popular. He was a fighter and as you say, Fred, tenacious indeed - and committed. He will be long remembered by the Canadia public although the NDP may cease to exist. Rest in Peace, Jack.

August 23, 2011 / 12:27

The NDP is still the opposition. 4 yrs. Or so. They'll find a new leader. He-she may not be a Tommy Douglas-Ed Broadbent-Jack Layton-David/Stephen Lewis...maybe more like a Bob Rae---but in terms of past and present Prime Ministers and Provincial leaders that would be ok.

Ray, actually Buster said I had to like him.

Phil my comment was in general It would be like if I posted the same thing about you

Gee thanks a lot Mike, and I thought I could count on your support!!!
By the way if I don't like someone and they die I promise not to say a bad word about them. What a hypocrite!!

Real classy, dude. We'll be sure to say the same thing about you when you're taken down by cancer.

Get over yourself and your politics. Life is bigger than politics. Politics is nothing but a game and in the end, it doesn't matter anyway.

This man worked his entire life in the public, and he was taken down by 2 bouts of cancer. He never hurt anyone, never caused anyone pain and suffering. All he wanted was a better life for people while touting the Canadian flag. Is there something wrong with that?

Jesus, did anybody really read what I wrote??
My intention was to tie Jack into all the other lying politicians.Say and do anything to get elected and if that means lying aka McGuinty then so be it.I feel bad for Jack and his family but I am not going to hide behind my beliefs.
Now let's all relax.

August 24, 2011 / 09:47

There is a time for politics.

And there is a time for just thinking of the man and his family.

This is NOT the time for politics.

Maybe a bad time to mention Jack in a massage parlour. Really no one cared at election time but that's polictics for someone to research that and spill it out like it really mattered. Dirty game politics. Nasty people involved.
