Harper Flyin' High

June 9, 2011 @ 08:45

Man oh man can this country ever look Mickey Mouse sometimes.

The Prime Minister of our country, the leader of our nation takes a government jet to Boston to watch the hockey game and there's an army of idiots who want to piss all over him.

Outside of a solid majority, Stephen Harper just can't win the eyes of the loony left. Are the critics really serious, or is it just part of the ongoing campaign to discredit Harper at every turn?

First of all, the Prime Minster isn't allowed to fly on commercial flights for security reasons, so he's got to take a Canadian Forces plane. Secondly, so what if it cost tens of thousands of dollars, he's the goddamn Prime Minister and there's a Canadian team in Stanley Cup final.

You can bet your ass if he didn't go, the same people would be asking why?

It leaves me shaking my odd little head. Name me another country where the leader doesn't have full access to any bloody transportation he needs or wants.

Stephen Harper didn't use the jet for a holiday in the Bahamas. He didn't use it for a shopping spree in New York City; he used it to attend a hockey game, our national sport, in Boston, to see a Canadian team attempt to win the Cup for the first time in 20 years.

I thought it was pretty cool to see him there. I thought it displayed the "every day guy" part of the man that so many claim isn't there.

And further to the "Dopey and the Dustball" posting - the childish rogue page who pulled the stunt was given the chance to explain herself by "surprise" the Toronto Star, and as expected it was nothing but a bunch of naive bullshit.

Especially the part where she claims 60 percent of the country "voted against" the Conservatives, another indication that she's ignorant when it comes to Canadian politics.

With no less than five parties, it's almost impossible to get 50 percent of the popular vote but she's too bloody clueless to figure it out. Actually, the 40 percent Harper got, was pretty impressive.

Anyway, there's my rant for today. And please don't accuse me of blindly supporting the Prime Minister and his Boston excursion because I have supported all party leaders, both nationally and provincially when it comes to using government transportation.

It's what you do when you're the leader. It's what you have to do.

By the way, the Prime Minister paid for the hockey tickets himself and will re-imburse for the flights at charter rates. What a guy!

Freddie P nails it as usual. If Obama Air Force One'd his way to Vancouver for Game One, would a single, solitary American have pissed and moaned about it being an inappropriate use of government assets? I think not ...

I think if Obama had Air Force One'd it to Vancouver, people would be surprised he knows what Hockey Is. Not withstanding that, Harper is reimbursing the flight out of his own pocket, and paying for the tickets himself. He's PM and makes over $300,000/yr. If he wants to pay $500/ticket to go and see Boston whoop some Euro, er I mean Canuck tail on the ice, it's his money!

If you check the commenters over at the Star, you'll see that many of that rag's readers consider Miss Depape a national hero. Actually, she is a spoiled, vain brat who blew an employment opportunity that many other deserving young people would kill to have.
It reminds me of the time the Star gave a column to that other teenaged brat who stood in the picket line during the garbage strike, while she spouted her NDP/union beliefs with the heartless immaturity of her age.

I would suggest we give Miss De Pape her own reality show, but Kim Kardashian she aint!!

Pam, I respectfully disagree. Most of the comments I read indicated that even those with left-leaning tendencies thought DePape was way out of line and her knowledge of parliamentary democracy was lacking.

As I said to my left-leaning wife, would a conservative-leaning page pulling the same stunt have been accorded such laurels by the Star and Michael Moore?

DePape should enjoy her moment in the sun because it won't last long and I suspect her job offers will disappear when her story gets old.

Actually, Harper isn't reimbursing the flight, he's paying "out of pocket" what it would have cost to fly to Boston on a commercial jet. Not exactly the same thing. You and I and your neighbours are picking up the rest of the tab - it costs a hell of a lot more than the price of two first-class tickets to get that plane off the ground.

And standing up for what you believe in at all costs (like DePape)? That's a hero to me.

Who cares if Harper took a gov jet to Boston. thats how it works. 300 grand a year aint much to run the country.

As for you Pam. College kids protest. Get over it. Are u that angry that this consumes you? Wow to be old and bitter. Idealism brings about free thought which brings out new ideas. Good old Onterrible

Of course only a hard leftie would be vain enough to name himself the "Voice of Reason", but who am I to quibble...

Irvine - speak for yourself - I'm neither old, nor bitter, simply practical.
And you really broke me up with your comment about me being consumed - that's rich - coming from someone who has an all-consuming, unnatural hatred for all things Ontario..

Now that I think about it, I seem to recall then-PM Trudeau with his sons at a Grey Cup game in Toronto in the early 1980s. I guess they must have canoed down from Ottawa.

Could you imagine the left wing backlash if Stephen Harper was photographed with a beer in his hand? I cannot recall in recent history that a Canadian Prime Minister has been pecked apart, when clearly he has done a pristine job up to date.

I don't understand why he would go to boston where nobody knows his name. Vancouver is where he should of gone to watch the game live.

Most of you, including the blogger are clueless.

People are angry because Harper is cutting thousands of jobs in the new budget and government services but yet he gets to take the jet to Boston for a hockey game? Seriously people is that fair? He could have watched it from home like most other people.

Ms Depage's remark is very valid - th majority of Canadians did not vote for Harper. Our political system needs to be fixed (which is what Harper was saying before he got a majority)

You are the idiot. Harper is going to ruin Canada. He already has embarrassed Canada on the world stage.

I'm not a Harper hater, but the optics here are not good.

This is not about politics, it's just about not thinking this one out.

I am sure 24 Sussex has nice big HD TV. Stay at home, have a few beers like all the rest of us taxpayers!

What the fuck is going on here? After a few days away, I thought I'd check in to see what the Freddie Nation (FN) was on about. Clearly, the FN has had some grumpy leftist d-bags pissing and moaning about inane shit. For a minute, I thought I'd stumbled into a Catholic Teacher's forum or something.

Get over it people. Harper won. And won handily. End of story. If he and his daughter want to take in the Boston game, have at it. It's a super short flight that would enable him to get his ass back to work first thing this morning. If Obama took Air Force One to the fucking Whole Foods one state away, just to buy one organic apple, no one would get too wound up. You know why? He's the Grand Poobah. Harper is our Grand Poobah. And he's a hockey fanatic. I hope he and his lovely daughter Rachel had a good time.

Let's think for a moment about all of the shit Chretian pulled during his reign of lunacy. Go ahead, think. Remember his altercation with that pie-guy? No problem, observed the leftards. Had he been a Conservative, he would have been drawn and quartered.

BTW, that vacuous little tart with the sign needs some life lessons. I won't even use her name because she's a blight.

I have to agree with 4x4. This was a bad judgement call by Harper. I voted Conservative, I like the guy, but when a story runs the day before quoting Harper as stating there's billions of dollars in "fat" to cut from program spending, and stating that Canadians expect him to locate "efficiencies" in how their money is spent, and then he spends $30,000 in a single night to see a hockey game, it doesn't exactly lend his promises credibility.

Before anyone jumps all over me, yes, I realize $30,000 is less than a drop in the ocean when we're talking about the federal budget, but it's the principal of the thing, and the timing is just terrible.

Fred, I gotta believe that if Cretien had done this, you would have been all over him.

Irvine, WTF does the page thing have to do with Ontario? Like no one else anywhere in Canada is bothered by this little twit? Do you not realize how bizarre your fixation on Ontario is? I thought I read a post of yours a while ago saying it was your last post - or was that just wishful thinking on my part? Face it, you're a one-trick pony. Do us all a favour and haul your tired ass off to the glue factory.

@Shaun "He already has embarrassed Canada on the world stage." By world stage you wouldn't happen to mean the UN??? or The Emirate?

The UN is the biggest hypocritical and useless organization that exists today. Or tell me why Iran, China, Syria, Lybia, etc. have a seat but not Canada>!!

The Emirate of Dubai is a spoiled brat who gets his shorts tied in a knot just because he couldn't dictate to Harper how often he wants to fly into Canada.

Shaun, to use Speyside Phil's words: SHUT UP

Chris Mayberry
June 9, 2011 / 22:50

Shawn, did it bother you when Jean Chretien was winning his Liberal majorities when the majority of Canadians did not vote for him? As for the PM taking in a live game, good for him! He's a hockey nut. What did you want him to do? Drive from Ottawa to Buffalo and take jetBlue to Logan? Oh yeah, he can't fly commercial. So the prime minister of our country should have just loaded up the car and driven there? Y'know I'm pretty central when it comes to politics -- yeah, mushy middle! :) -- but when it comes to blind hatred, the left wins, hands down!

@Matt B I remember one year my friends and I drafted a football team on names alone. God that was fun.
