Humble Gets Boned

May 4, 2011 @ 16:49

Yes its true, my friend and former partner Humble Howard has been "let-go" from his morning show duties at Boom 97.3.

I don't like to say "fired" because that's such a nasty word when you're talking about someone you care about. "Fired" is for hockey coaches, slimy businessmen and dog fuckers.

When it comes to a hard working guy who put a lot into his show and thought he was on the right track to where the station wanted to be, you say "let go."

Only Howard can provide the details as to what happened and why. Maybe he can do another guest column about being "let go", like he did the last time it happened.

It's a whacky world.

It seems like only yesterday that the Humble and Fred Show was hummin' along in Toronto, we were having a lot of fun and we thought it would never end.

Then you say yes when you should have said no and the fickle finger of fate rams you right up the ass.

Howard will be fine. He ain't dumb you know.

This came as one hell of a shock to me (and many others of course!) The first thing that popped into my tiny mind was "Where can we look for Humble & Fred on the dial?" I would LOVE to see you two together on-air again -- the way it should be...

Ditto what Craig Milton said.

May 4, 2011 / 17:32

OMG! This is a real shock to read about and so disappointing too. I thought Howard was fantastic on Boom, and I know that his long-time fans will miss him dearly and listen for details of his next "gig". I do agree that the Himble & Fred show would be great to hear again. Boy, that radio-world is a really tough business. Thanks for sharing this news Fred -- as we know, listeners rarely get to hear such news from the stations that they're loyal to.

May 4, 2011 / 17:34

Oh that's AWFUL! So sorry for Howard. Freddie, can you get him a job?

May 4, 2011 / 17:51

The return of Howard and Fred? I'd produce that! The show on the Edge was the time of my professional life. One things for sure, I'll be removing Boom from my preset and facebook etc. F them. It's particularly difficult to accept, because he and Colleen seemed to be rolling along and on the right track at that station.

I hate this business sometimes.

May 4, 2011 / 18:55

Sorry to hear about Howard, never heard of BOOM, they didn't deserve him and I hopes theys rot in Hell.

I stopped listening to FM radio after the demise of Humble and Fred, there were not (and still are not) any morning 'personalities' worth listening to, went to satellite and even then when some of the announcers get talking too long it's off to another channel.

Best wishes to Howard - - - Ed.

May 4, 2011 / 19:06

Well this totally sucks, ditto to Shwarma's comments, off the Facebook, off my presets-to hell with it all. I have never tuned in to 99.9 after they did the same thing. I say: "Bring back Humble and Fred"!!

Well, its seems to be quit a common practice within the Radio world to see radio hosts just dissapear, and even though I wasnt a listener to Humble and Colleen, I, like many others thought that their morning show was really doing well.

Maybe its just meant to happen and we will see a return of Humble and Fred, possibly with Colleen in the near future.

WIsh you all the best Howey, and Fred you bastard, make some calls and get the fucking show back on track so we can all enjoy again!

I might even come on your show occasionally with a little more thought than before!

May 4, 2011 / 20:48

Fred--- Get Danny Boy to produce a once a week version of H & F and syndicate it out starting with Bill Carrol at 640

May 4, 2011 / 21:07

That just sucks!!! I was completely shocked when I heard this - and couldn't believe it was true until i read it here! I'm done with all things BOOM! Let us know when the next adventure begins!!!

May 4, 2011 / 21:47

It's the usual radio crap. Fire someone to move in another direction. What direction? Who really knows?

I don't think they will find better hosts that will bring in better ratings. I hope we find Humble on another station soon. Colleen and Papa Rushmore too.

They both deserve better. Still don't get how Mad Dog and Billie have jobs and Howard doesn't. Stupid radio.

May 4, 2011 / 22:04

"Still don't get how Mad Dog and Billie have jobs and Howard doesn't. Stupid radio."

For sure!!! I don't know how Mad Dog got away with an F-bomb at 8:00 this morning either and didn't get canned!!

Sorry Humble. At least you can enjoy sleeping in for the next few days until you are back on the radio where you belong .

May 4, 2011 / 22:52

What a shame. I thought Humble and Colleen had a great thing going. Their personalities jelled just great.

Here I go again looking for a new morning show. What a pain in the after.

Hope Howard is finding another gig soon. Catchacoma's idea sounds pretty good.

Sorry to hear this for HH, never really listened to Boom as the music wasn't my cup of tea, but enjoyed Humble sitting in on NEWSTALK1010 panel on the John Moore show.

Good Luck HH

That sucks, I was listening too and it was nice to hear Howard again on the airwaves every morning.

Toronto needs another injection of Humble and Fred. I have absolutely nothing to listen to in the morning.

radio is ridiculous. Truly talented people get the shaft way too often.

May 5, 2011 / 07:55

There's no station for Humble and Fred. Everybodie's chasing soccer moms and Fred hates soccer.

Doug Givens
May 5, 2011 / 08:14

Since Humble and Fred left the Edge I've been looking for a morning show to equal that. It just doesn't exist. All the same shit, nothing clever. I don't care about what's going on in Hollywood. Blundell's OK but there's not enough music and the subjects often aren't clever. Why did fun radio leave town with Humble and Fred and it hasn'tcomne back?????

Jennifer Oliver
May 5, 2011 / 08:36

I was so mad at Boom this morning I listened my Humble and Fred CD on the way to work. Still funny after all these years.

May 5, 2011 / 08:40

Conventional radio is all but dead. I got XM radio 3 years ago and haven't looked back. Listen to what you want and no commercials. What talking the on air personnel do is short and to the point. I used to listen to Q107. I know Fred thinks their morning show is great but I don't. Humble was fun to listen to when I had a chance, There will be no morning shows like Pete and Geets or Humble and Fred at CFNY. What radio programmers think always made me wonder WTF. Over the years I've learned a little bit about how radio works. It is nothing more than a delivery system for advertising. I don't feel bad paying for what I listen to. I think back to when Jack came to Toronto,no DJ's just music, you remember how long that lasted. What are we stuck with. Formatted radio that has no imagination. I will say though that David Marsden at the Rock is doing it the old CFNY way.

May 5, 2011 / 08:46

Holy crap! That explains why I was driving in to work today and yesterday and heard this strange voice in Humble's place - I thought he was on vacation or something, so I just changed stations.

I can't believe this has happened again!!! WTF is going on? I remember when it happened to you two and that ass, Dean Blundell, showed up. What are these stations so unhappy with?

May 5, 2011 / 08:52

Hey and Howard wanna make a major lifestyle change and come work for me at PROUD FM?

Seriously...sometimes this business is just brutal.

But we all know that already.

Tracey Owen
May 5, 2011 / 09:22

maybe Humble would be humble enouff to move to Peterborough and do some time with FP?

Sid from Kapuskaping
May 5, 2011 / 09:25

Radio used to be about the music. And the personalities. Has it become about business and ratings? Or was it always about that?

May 5, 2011 / 09:46

Sid, it was always about ratings but at least radio used to fun. No-a-days you are only as good as the last ratings book.

May 5, 2011 / 10:02

Radio really stinks. It is a template that anyone can manage.

May 5, 2011 / 10:52

Howard is way too smart for a morning show. I wish him well...

May 5, 2011 / 11:36

Just how many "kicks to the stones" does this fella have to endure?

May 5, 2011 / 11:59

as Silvio told Pauly on the Sopranos.'You're only as good as your last envelope'.

May 5, 2011 / 12:23

Toronto radio is crazy; dumping Humble Howard is a huge mistake. The guy's talented, intelligent, funny and upbeat - and never boring. I've been a huge fan of HH since his CFNY days and if Humble and Fred are ever reunited - in Peterborough or elsewhere - I'll be overjoyed. Love you guys:)

May 5, 2011 / 12:35

It is bullshit what happened to Humble. You have both gotten the shaft and you two are the best that TO radio has ever heard. Buddy boy, how much support do you 2 need from your fans to get back on the fucking radio. I love ya dude.

May 5, 2011 / 14:25

Too bad for Humble, I liked it when Humble and Fred where morning guys, ok, would be nice if you applied at the Rock, 94.9 get back with Dave Marsden
or get Pete and Geets as well already 94.9 sounds like CFNY

May 5, 2011 / 14:34

I don't get it. BOOM has been ratings gold for Astral yet they still have to mess with it. Keeps staff on their toes I guess. Kids looking to radio as a career, make sure you have strong toes! Good luck Humble and sweet Colleen.

Mike from Lowville
May 5, 2011 / 16:04

That sucks Howard! Boom is officially off the preset! Too bad, it was a good listen out in the garage. Good thing I still get CIOI 101.5!

May 5, 2011 / 16:21

Hey Yall and FP
Thanks for the kinds words and thoughts.
I would love to work with The Poo again(Freddie that is) and when he gets back from a quick week away I'm sure we'll lay down a podcast or two.
Thanks again and be very well.

Looks like absolutely NOTHING has changed in radio show biz since my 'FH days in the 80s

Buffalo Boy Mike
May 5, 2011 / 17:19

Podcasts sound like an idea! Next one could be entitled Humble and Fred's Radio Bitch Fest Podcast in which you guys give your honest opinions of what has gone wrong with radio other than the fact that Howard just got canned again for no good reason

Rudy C.
May 5, 2011 / 17:23

There has been nothing, I mean nothing on Toronto morning radio worth listening to since Humble and Fred. I get mad some mornings listening to the crap. We listened to Q this morning and it didn't make me feel any better.

Tim Geddes
May 5, 2011 / 17:42

Shitty! I miss Humble and Fred. CFNY mornings are unlistenable, those douche-nozzles think they are so funny, they laugh at themselves, Christ they make me miss Steve Anthony... not really.

Kelly Doan
May 5, 2011 / 17:43

May 6, 2011 / 12:18

Unbeleiveable....Good Luck HH you will bounce back and I will follow...

May 6, 2011 / 18:37

hang in there you will bounce back

May 7, 2011 / 00:53

May 9, 2011 / 19:32

Humble Rocks! Boom not so much.

May 9, 2011 / 20:38

I've been chasing one or the other of you all across the radio dial since I first heard the "Humble and Fred" show on 102.1 The Edge, then over to 99.9, and finally to BOOM 97.3.

What the HELL is wrong with Toronto radio these days?!? You were both awesome, and funny as hell, and I missed you both, but was able to console myself with the loss of Fred when Humble was still on the air.

I really liked BOOM's playlist (I guess I'm a part of that aging demographic they're targeting!), but I am really turned off by their (mis)treatment of OUR HUMBLE.

I think I'll be listening more to my extensive CD collection and CBC Radio from now on. BOOM can suck dead air.

Tom Wilson
May 10, 2011 / 22:45

I now have absolutely NO reason to listen to 97.3 FM, whatever they call themselves. If I had happened to receive 'a book', the station would have seen a spike in the 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. slot. (That's my commute from Beaverton to Ajax) Howard is a very funny guy. Can't wait to follow him to his next gig.

May 10, 2011 / 23:31

Sorry to hear that...however like many others 97.3 is not very popular channel and they were lucky they have Humble H.

May 12, 2011 / 18:28

I really enjoyed Howard & Colleen in the morning. They made a great team. I'll be changing the dial again looking for my morning show to entertain me on the way to work. I was totally shocked to hear they were let go. Dumbass executives!

May 14, 2011 / 11:06

I loved you Humble and Fred on CFNY with your other staff. So when I learned what CFNY did, I was disappointed because I got so used to listening to you guys on my way to work. I got over it by just radio surfing. But when I heard Humble got back on air with Colleen at BOOM, I got interested again and tuned in again. And I was wondering when will Fred will become a guest, even for just once. And now, Humble gets fired again after making BOOM a popular morning radio choice for so many people. I just took out 97.3 from my presets now. Fred, how are you doing? I've missed your radio gig. Will you ever do any radio again?

May 15, 2011 / 15:33

This Rochester NY girl and SUNY Fredonia grad was a loyal listener of CFNY and HUMBLE & FRED for nearly a decade, beginning in the late 80s when I turned the dial and found CFNY while attending college in Fredonia. God bless the Toronto airwaves for reaching us on the other side of the pond! I remember moving to NYC in 1997 and thinking "Why isn't NYC radio as good as CFNY?" I went into serious CFNY and Humble & Fred withdrawal at that point.

I still have old cassettes of Humble and Fred Shows that my brother used to tape and mail to me in NYC. This was in the late 90s and before online radio, pod casts and satellite radio. I have converted them to MP3s and play them on my iPod and often find myself chuckling in public when I listen to them.

I just wanted to thank Humble Howard and Fred Patterson (and all their supporting team members) for many wonderful years of listening enjoyment.

Peace and Best Wishes

May 16, 2011 / 07:17

I am NOT happy that Humble and Colleen are gone from Boom? What happened this time? Billy and Mad Dog want their job too? I will no longer listen to Boom, shame on you Boom.... you lost 2 great personalities

May 16, 2011 / 07:43

OK first Humble gets fired, now Boom is 70s, 80's, 90s? Seriously if you wanted to lose half your listeners, way to go - done and done!

May 16, 2011 / 10:42

OMG!! I hadn't had the radio on in the morning for a while. One day last week I turned on Boom hoping to get my day off to a great start listening to Humble and Colleen. Hmmm...not there...maybe on vacation?? Tuned in again this morning...still not there. Googled him to find out what the scoop is and here I am.

That really sucks! I am with the others that said Boom is now off my pre-sets. Music is music...DJ personalities are totally different and nobody can replace Humble and Colleen/Humble and Fred.

Too bad, so sad! will be fine.
Boom...not so sure.

long time
May 17, 2011 / 09:19

I didn't even like the station, just listened in the mornings for Howard and Colleen. Is the new (lame) guy permanent? No reason to listen anymore... Maybe we should be posting our comments on Boom's website...?

May 17, 2011 / 13:52

I switched to Sirius/XM a long time ago. Radio is dead.

May 17, 2011 / 20:06

I miss Howard and Colleen. No point of listening to Boom anymore. Hope to hear Howard another station soon.

Rossko P
May 18, 2011 / 07:45

So I called 97.3 yesterday morn to find out....Stew said "well the station and Howatd and Colleen decided to go in different directions ???????? yup no more 97.3 on my presets

Chris B
May 18, 2011 / 08:36

I sent a note to the Program director for the station yesterday after reading this. Told them that Boom was great until they "let go" HH, expressing what I thought about the choice and that I wouldn't be listening in in the mornings anymore because Stu makes me want to poke my eyes out. We miss you Howard.

May 19, 2011 / 12:30

It's funny that back when Stu lost his job to Howard, the very same backlash ensued against Howard. We have short memories.

I love Howard, I love Colleen, I love Fred and I also love Stu. What's the big deal? Howard will bounce back - he always does.

Ed the Sock
May 19, 2011 / 12:42

I want everyone to know that HH being ‘let go’ wasn’t my fault. Contrary to public belief, I wasn't writing bits for Howard during his stay at Boom, it was all HH.

May 21, 2011 / 14:54

Morning radio has never been quite the same for me ever since the demise of Humble and Fred. How hard could it be to bring the old show back. I think a format similar to 97.7 Hits with more new stuff and less 80's fluff metal would be good. Good old fashioned rock from the 90's to present with just a sprinkling of decent classic rock is what I am looking for. Humble and Fred would be a great morning show for that format. ... Get it done Fred, you have peeps, get the band back together!!!

stan the man
May 26, 2011 / 06:02

Hey old guy 101--I was passing through Toledo Ohio a few years back and stumbled upon "Brady in the Afternoon." I emailed the radio station, got his reply--he had moved to Toledo, married his high school sweetheart and was happy there. I think the call letters are somewhere around 97.3 in Toledo is you drive down there close enough to get it. sometime

June 1, 2011 / 14:34

I just cant believe this ! He made my morning commute enjoyable! Even though i love the music on this station.. i will no longer listen in to the morning show.. it wont be the same !

June 3, 2011 / 09:41

Nooooooo, say it ain't so :-( It was just last year Jan, when I was lucky enough to win a fantastic trip to Jamaica with the morning crew and a bunch of fans. H & C were very gracious & fun to be around. Loved their morning show, now what am I gonna listen to. Oh well back to the IPOD I guess. Humble, Fred and Colleen, now there's a trio I'd listen to. ( the Good, the Bad and the Ugly hahaha )

June 6, 2011 / 07:02

I dont listen anymore since they took Humble and Colleen off the air. It really pissed me off. thank goodness for ipods!! :)

June 7, 2011 / 15:04

I was off sick for 10 days, get back in my car to drive to work and there is Stu...thought Humble and Colleen were on vacation but that was an awfully long vacation. Damn...I just found I have to find another station...this sucks.

June 8, 2011 / 16:16

ARGH! For weeks I've been thinking "Where the heck are Humble and Colleen?" I finally remembered to google it today, and here we are. What the heck? They were funny and entertaining; loved Papa Rusholme. I loved driving in to work listening to them. Now it's just boredom.
