He Had Nice Skin

April 25, 2011 @ 08:06

I didn't know Ken Kostick very well, but I did get to know him well enough to feel pretty shitty when I heard he died last week.

It was on the Edge where Ken and Mary-Jo Eustace first made an appearance on the Humble and Fred Show. They also popped up on MOJO, and on a few occasions Mary-Jo guest Freded.

They were doing "What's for Dinner" at the time and they were great guests because they worked so well together. We had a good time with them, and Ken was a gracious and warm fella who was fun to be around.

Mary-Jo is drop dead gorgeous, and I can't for the life of me understand why her former prick husband Dean McDermott would dump her for Tori Spelling.

You can't bone money.

I think it was around 2001 that Howard and I appeared on "What's for Dinner". I can't remember what the recipe was, but I do remember that Ken kept giving us shit for asking stupid questions. But it was fun shit.

Ken was ill for some time, battliing something called acute pancreatitis, which I found rather surprising. Whenever I saw the guy, up until recently, he always looked so healthy, especially his skin.

I'm not the type of guy to notice another guy's skin, but Ken Kostick had great skin.

He was only 58 years old. What a waste.

As someone who works in media you should at least make an effort to be factual. Ken didn't have "the big C", he died of complications from Pancreatitis. I didnt see one report that ever mentioned cancer. Where'd you get your info?

Your comments on Mary-Jo are spot on. I've always had a thing for her and her voice.

Ken seemed like a very likable guy and they did work well together.

Sad news.

@Anonymous
You got me anonymous. Initial reports on the radio said cancer, and I really didn't read anything till today, so you got me.

Not trying to get ya. It's important when commenting on someones passing that the cause of death is accurate. You heard on the rado that it was cancer? Yikes - hope it wasnt a corus property...

Rogers. By the way, it would be cool if you posted your name. I can follow your IP address, and see that you're here several times a day, you should.. come out!

I interviewed Ken & Mary-Jo for He Said, She Said (the next incarnation of What's For Dinner) & found Ken to be a fantastically warm presence. His passing came as a real shock. He was a real inspiration to a whole generation of budding chefs, & he will be sorely missed.

You know that even though my ISP assigns dynamic IP addresses? Anyone subscribing to the same ISP could be assigned that IP. Any other Tek Savvy customers out there? I think you're just mad cuz I pointed out your boo boo.

The Star and the Sun, the only two Sunday papers, both reported pancreatic cancer.

Why are Tek Savvy customers such douchebags? Every email I get at work that has the Tek Savvy address is from an asshole.

Thanks Mike. Assholes and weasels. There's a new breed out there.

Sorry Mike, I've got yesterday's Star open in front of me. Entertainment section , page E6. An article from The Canadian Press titled "Ken Kostick, celebrity chef, dies at 58". It says quite plainly: "He (Kostick's partner) said Kostick died Friday of acute pancreatitis.". Both online versions of the Star and Sun state the same. No mention of cancer. It's good to be loyal to your friends, but to make false claims to do so is a little much.

So why am I labelled a weasel? Because Freddie got into a snit when I pointed out his error, and then again when I pointed out keeping tabs on IP addresses isn't so accurate. Both times i was factually correct, but Freddie doesn't like to be corrected.

By the way, you might not be so surprised that Ken suffered from pancreatitis if you bothered to look into it's causes. But being uninformed can happen when you read the SOWNY board for your news.

I bought Ken's Soup Cookbook many years ago... great recipes.

The Curry Squash soup is my favourite. I think I'll make it this week to honour the memory of a great guy. You can always tell a well used cookbook by the stains on every page.

Too bad Mr. Right Fighter has chosen to steal this page, and take away from Fred's intentions, which is to remember a great guy who died too young. You win 'my name is Earl' good for you.

Ken and Mary-Jo were great together... it was hilarious to listen to the sexual innuendo, bantering back and forth while they cooked.

RIP Ken.

Why do you point out that you know peoples ip addys ONLY when you are proven to be INCORRECT!!
GROW UP !!!

Kudos to freddie for not deleting the asshole on this posting. What's the big deal, he thought it was cancer and it wasn't. The point is, why cant the asshole leave his name?

Asshole
April 25, 2011 / 18:07

No Gene, the point is why instead of just saying, "Whoops, I made a mistake." he has to say it was reported incorrectly on the radio (a competitior, of course!)and then his radio pal Stafford lies to help him out, not thinking someone might still have access to the paper to verify his claim. Fred's like the Richard Nixon of bloggers.

Gene
April 25, 2011 / 19:12

@Asshole
Are you really serious with this whole thing? Obviously freddie heard cancer somewhere or he wouldn't have used it.. and I see he corrected it.. and why would Stafford lie? Obviously Mike read it in the paper, and to be honest I heard other people say cancer today. What's the big deal, freddie admits the mistake in the second response. You really are an asshole.

Anonymous, Fact, Earl, etc. You missed the point, so what if Freddie thought he died of pancreatic cancer and he didn't? The man's dead, Freddie met him, and he was trying to pay homage to him. F*ck Off.

Freddie P.
April 25, 2011 / 19:55

@All concerned - As ridiculous as this back and forth is, I'm not going to remove it. In my initial posting today I used the word cancer, because that's what I heard initially. As for the IP address, you can talk about any system you want, but that initial IP showed up several times. Bottom line to all of this, if you'e such a stickler for a facts and accuracy, why not come out from hiding and give your name and/or a return e-mail address? It's for this reason I used the term weasel.

Sad to hear of Ken's passing. My wife and I loved watching What's For Dinner because of the chemistry between him and Mary-Jo. You could tell they got along famously and that he was an all around good Joe.

Why people feel to the need to start a pissing/dick-measuring contest in the middle of a memoriam is beyond me, but please. GROW THE FUCK UP AND SHOW SOME RESPECT.

I sat beside Ken on a flight from Toronto to Vancouver quite a few years ago. I did not know who he was, but alot of people on the plane did. He was going out to do some book signings, and he gave me a recipe book which I still have. I remember we talked about everything from cooking, politics, vacation spots to try around the world, movies, theatre, all sorts of things. He was a really nice guy to spend a flight talking to. Sad to here this news.

I do regret that this thread has been diverted from being about Ken Kostick, so maybe a new topic could be created and the relevant posts relocated there, because this  think this is worth examining. Fred, you need to explain why someone choosing to remain anonymous has any bearing on all of this.  How does it make the poster any less credible than someone who identifies themselves, and still blatantly lies?  Take Mr. Stafford for instance.  In order to back you up, he confidently stated that both Sunday editions of the Star and the Sun reported cancer.  Stafford specifically identified both papers by name, and correctly pointed out that they're the only GTA (and national) papers to publish on Sunday, and they both only print single editions, so there's absolutely no room for confusion there, yet I have both papers in front of me and they both state "acute pancreatitis" as Ken's ailment (page E6 of the Entertainment section in the Star, page 14 of News in the Sun).  Not a mention of cancer (and at this point I couldn't care less about the cancer vs. pancreatitis thing anymore - it's gone beyond that  - now I'm interested in principal), yet Stafford was adamant that it was reported as cancer. Gene asked earlier, "...and why would Stafford lie? Obviously Mike read it in the paper...".  It's a good question, Gene.  Why would Stafford lie?  He obviously he didn't read it in the paper, because it wasn't there (I suppose I could always post photos if you really want).  He couldn't even mistakenly believe he read it (maybe in one paper, but BOTH?).

You seem to believe that attaching a "real" name and/or email address to posts somehow gives them credence, but why?  If a well known media personality has no problem making false statements and attaching his name (and reputation) to them, and is not worried about being accountable for them, then why do you imagine that anyone else who "outs" themselves is going to be anymore credible?

@ Gene

But you don't think it was f'in weird of Stafford to lie for Freddie? Or that's okay as long as he uses his real name? I guess you have to a radio guy to get it.

Irvine

@asshole, whoever.

I rarely defend Fred Patterson slick. I'm the anti Christ on this forum (err, AntiChrist Superstar).

But let's get real. Fred was listening to legitimate media. Said media stated that this individual passed away from cancer. Fred, shocked at the news, posted a tribute in his blog USING that information he heard

And you crawl in his ass? Get real dude. Hell, Rogers could have gotten the information from a reliable source that was incorrect. Stop blaming the messenger. And stop hiding behind an alias. It's lame. I don't agree with Patterson all the time but he's one of the FEW radio dudes that has the nuts to use his name and stand behind his comments. You don't. So go whine elsewhere or I'll be kind enough to volunteer to assist Fred with any IP related technical know-how he requires.

April 27, 2011 / 17:55

@Irvine.  Thanks for your input tough guy.  You have know idea how intimidated I am at the thought of you unleashing your "technical know how" on me.  Good luck with that.

Beyond that I don't have much to say in response except that you seem to have trouble following along.  This conversation went beyond the "cancer" mistake a long time ago.  Any further debate should be focused on why it's acceptable to blatantly lie on this site, as in the case of Stafford,  but for some reason pseudonyms are frowned on. Even "Irvine" is meaningless- do you ever post your full name and email address publicly? Fred could easily take away the ability to make anonymous posts any time, but he doesn't, so why bitch about it?

April 27, 2011 / 19:25

At the risk of siding with this new enemy of the state, I recall having the same username vs. real name argument with Fred a long time ago. My position obviously hasn't changed. We're being warned every day about the need to protect privacy, there's stories of identity theft in every paper, and you think I'm going to throw my real name and email address out there to give some creep a leg up on collecting my personal info? No thanks. I'm no coward, but I am cautious.

Anonymous
April 28, 2011 / 15:34

So that's it? All of these "stand up" guy's with nothing more to say.

@Fred: still waiting for you're response on how an anonymous poster is less credible than a named one, in light of Staffords gambit.

@Stafford: waiting for you to stop being such a douchebag and man up to your creepy tactic.

@ Gene: no response to whether you think Stafford is f'ing weird for lying for Fred

@ irvine: you folded faster than a cheap suit. What's your full name and email address?

Come on guys, just a couple more topics from Fred and this one will be buried in the archives.
