The Greatest

May 11, 2010 @ 12:32

Whilst enjoying a chicken pita from the Pita Pit during my lunch break today I paid a visit to a few websites and found that Toronto Mike and Rick Hodge wrote about the same thing.

Steve Nash.

Steve Nash is the wonderful little fellow who plays for the Phoenix Suns of the NBA. By NBA standards he's small at 6' 1", however by heart and soul standards he's a giant. And the best part of it all is that he's Canadian.

By now, if you follow sports you know what an amazing performance he put forth against the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday night. With one eye literally closed shut because of an elbow he from Tim Duncan, Nash put the Suns on his shoulders and closed the door on a four game sweep.

This fella is an amazing specimen, who in a big man's league managed to win the MVP award not once but twice. And that brings me to the subject of this piece.

I wrote about the same thing back in 2007 and my attitude hasn't changed.

As much as I love hockey and enjoy baseball and football, as long as Canada names an athlete of the year, like it does through the Lou Marsh Award, nobody else but Steve Nash should receive it.

I don't care who it is or what they do; nothing they can do can match what Steve Nash does in the NBA.

It defies logic and doesn't make sense from a physical standpoint. His domination of those who should dominate him is something that can't be explained.

I don't even like basketball. It bores the snot out of me, but that doesn't play any part in my assessment of Steve Nash.

He may be the greatest athlete this country has ever produced.

Maurice Richard first. But I love Nash. Why don't the Raptors try to get him?

Better yet, the Leafs.

Agree with everything you said Fred...

However, based on the past (Jacques Villeneuve winning over Larry Walker when Walker was MLB's MVP, an incredible accomplishment compared to driving a car) I can see the award going to the winning goal scorer for the Gold Medal at the Olympics.

How could they not choose Nash? Right?

To bad he can't lower standards and play for his country.
That's why I don't think he deserves to be named Canadian athlete of the year.He is a great athlete and a tremendous ball player, but not a good Canadian representative

Remember, he almost won 3 MVP in a row (came in second to Dirk Nowitzki)

@buster69 - Nash did his time with Canada on the International stage dude.

Agree. The guy is phenomenal. It's too bad he plays in Phoenix where we rarely see him.

Imagine if he had ever played in Toronto? (or Vancouver?)

Nash 'lowered his standards' by wearing the flag for more than 11 years, Buster. And he still has a ton of Canada/B.C.-based ongoing charity initiatives

Not only is he a warrior, he's one of the rare guys who uses the platform his gifts give him to actually have an opinion on important issues. See the Iraq invasion, the "Los Suns" response to the recent Arizona illegalimmigrantion bill.

The world needs more guys like Nash.

Nash will never play for the Raps. He doesn't even play for Canada anymore.

What does playing for the Craptors have to do with being Canadian? Name one Canadian on the team currently. They may play in Toronto, but they're about as Canadian as the Denver Nuggets. Nash is a class act that Canadians can be proud of, regardless of where he plays.

Freddie, I couldn't agree with you more. I could not name 5 teams in the NBA and would rather watch bowling but Nash makes you proud to be Canadian.

Really well written blog-post buddy. I usually come across stupid drivel, when scanning the web but this particular piece was like a breath of fresh air to me. Many thanks for taking the time to expose this info to myself as well as your other readers. Debby.

Why is Creating a Mosque at Ground Zero in fact encouraged to occur? I have never heard a single thing so absolutely preposterous in all my life. If this truly approaches fact, It might be the worst thing ever in your life. virginia
