How Do You Like My Crocs?

May 9, 2010 @ 09:02

How many times do I have to say it, the Montreal Canadiens current ride through the playoffs has nothing to do with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Why is it, just because you're a Leaf fan who wants the Habs to lose, Hab fans keep throwing the plight of the Leafs back in your face?

We get it, the Leafs suck. They missed the playoffs for the fifth year in a row and the Kessell trade doesn't look very good right now, but what does that have to do with whether the Habs dizzying good fortune continues in these playoffs?

Whenever I criticize the Habs or urge them to come back and play at their true level, Hab fans want to talk about the Leafs being on the golf course or not winning the Stanley Cup since 1967.

It's immaterial.

I'm not an idiot; I know what the deal is. The Leafs have a mountain to climb before getting back to NHL respectability but I have reasonable confidence that Brian Burke will get them there. But it's not going to happen now, or this week or this spring.

It's going to take time. Like the time it took the Habs to rebuild a couple of times during the 1993-2003 stretch when the Leafs could wipe the floor with them.

But again, none of that means anything now, just like the pile of Stanley Cup banners that the Habs own mean nothing right now. Its history, it's over and the last one came almost two decades ago. What matters right now is now, and the Habs, despite a surprising uprising in the playoffs are on the verge of elimination.

Throwing the current situation of the Leafs in my face has no point. No more than I should come back and say the Leafs beat the Habs three of the last four times they met this season, the Habs only won a handful more games than the Leafs and they were lucky to make the playoffs on the last day of the season.

None of that matters. Just like whether the Leafs are playing golf right now matters.

What matters to a true Leaf fan is the immediacy of hoping the Habs don't win another game this year. Because we don't like them, and the reason we don't like them is because of most of what I've stated above.

Hab fans are aggravating and anything their team accomplishes is more often than not buried by their big mouths and bizarre attachment to ancient history.

One more Pens, and I hope Sidney scores five.

@Fred. Asking us to believe that your loathing of the Canadiens and the volley of often-times childish and petty attacks that we have read following each of their six wins in this season's playoffs (a series win over the top-ranked Capitals, and two victories thus far over the defending Stanley Cup champions), has nothing to do with your attachment to the 11-time Stanley Cup champion Maple Leafs (13 if you include the Arenas and St. Patricks), is hypocritical of you, and a sudden departure from the long-running undercurrent of your recent rants.

On the other hand, I commend you for public acknowledging that "the Leafs suck." If only Hitler had conceded as much regarding the state of his own troops' performance in late '44/early '45. He still would have got his ass kicked, but his onlookers would have had a little more respect for the man. (For a great example of denial of achievement in sports, even better than Leafs fans trying to underestimate the achievements of Les Canadiens, look no further than Hitler's assessment of the remarkeable American - Jesse Owens - who put on a clinic at the '36 Olympics in Munich. Hitler was there and was never man enough to say, "Hey, Jesse, you kicked our ass. Good on ya. Lemme buy you a Warsteiner.") Imagine how much better Adolph would have felt about himself had he done that. Like me the other day, acknowledging the Maple Leafs' performance in '67 in knocking off the vastly superior Blackhawks in the first round. Makes me feel good.

And so, how can you not expect Habs fans, who have been the brunt of childish, biased insults on your site during the playoffs, to connect the Habs' playoff success with the Maple Leafs' lack of it? In short, and harkening back to that oft-used expression in the school playground, when Jacques wacked Angus over the head for calling him a 'frog' (hey, it was the sixties!) - "You started it."

In the end, I am comforted by the fact that ultimately, "ya can't fool the people." In the end, the people always know in their gut what is true and what is right, what resonates with them and what is false. Kinda like when hundreds of thousands turned out to silent walk past Maurice Richard's coffin. Unspoken truth. Communal understanding.

Can't wait for game 7.

@Glenn Pelletier
As soon as you mentioned Hitler I should have deleted your posting.. but alas.. I must show some degree of tolerance with Hab fans.

Well, you're pretty irrational with your Habs coverage, Freddie. When they win, it's a terrible thing for the game and a fluke. When they lose you celebrate.

I can understand why Hab fans would want to throw the Leafs struggles in your face after that.

It's kind of like a guy driving a Ford Pinto making fun of his friend for driving a bad car (which happens to be in much better shape than the Pinto).

Pinto = Leafs
Habs = Ferrari
Fred's Crocs = Please don't tell me you actually wear those.

Freeway I've prety much stayed out of this insanity but really !!
If Pinto = Leafs
then Habs = Ferrari is not even close. They are in the playoffs so the are better than the leafs (who i concede SUCK and will for a long while ) but they are not Ferrai -Pinto Better more like Habs = 92 Taurus. Reliable maybe but dam they're boring!

Freddie: I could care less about the Habs or the Leafs.....however, if you were to substitute, say, the PATRIOTS, I would totally get your hatred, so....I AM WITH YOU! HABS SUCK!

"Habs = Ferrari"

An over-priced, flashy with no real value car?

Good comparison!

Remember this:The Habs blew things up before this season and started the rebuild. They lost their way into the play-offs. Give them credit, they are trying their best. In the next few days there might not be any Canadian teams in the play-offs. This makes the Americans happy and the CBC sad. The Leafs blew things up during the season; so what should have we expected. Us loosing two draft choices hurts, but people smarter then me say the Kessel signing will be good in the long run. This finger pointing proves nothing. Hab fans hate the Leafs and vice versa. End of story.

Hey Fred if it's all history and meaningless why did your useless G.M. Brian Burke feel the need to have a "celebration of the Laughs (oops) Leafs 1967 Stanley Cup win. What a joke this organization is . They have nothing to celebrate so they create an event out of the fact that the haven't won the cup over 40 years. Oh my gawd!!!! What a bunch of looser's!

Freddie, you own Crocs????

TedNes
May 10, 2010 / 13:15

Freddie; I have the same Leafs Crocs. They're great for working in the backyard, cause if I get dog doo or other unmentionables on them, it doesn't really matter. I got mine on sale at a local clearance outlet for $9-----I hope you didn't pay list!

I guess I'm a turncoat---I've walked away from any sort of Leafs blind loyalty. I still go to games, and I'm happy when they do well, but I don't live and die with them---they've disappointed me for far too long. I loved their runs in 93 and the early 2000's and was all over them, but I finally gave up in the Junior John years---too many boneheaded moves.

I switched my allegiance down the 401, but not to the Habs. No, I stay at Caesar's Windsor, and go to the Joe for Red Wings games. We see great hockey, get 2 pretty good seats, and get a night out at a nice hotel all for the price of one platinum at the ACC.

However, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't pulling for the Habs for this year too----call it the Halak effect. Between him and Camilleri (whom the Leafs could have had!), I'm smitten.

Oh, and go Bruins go too!....that ex-Leaf prospect Rask is setting the world on fire as well.

The Leafs will always have a place in my heart. However, sometimes you need to listen to your brain....

How do you think that speed is going to effect rankings? Personally I think that although it might not be a big factor now, it's going to get more important.

Just for those who are concerned about speed, you can speed up the loading speed of most sites (by up to 4 times) using 2 lines of code if your server supports zlib compression. Do a search for it and you'll see how easy it is.

It doesn't help with compressing css files though, you should Gzip those.

Alternatively you might consider a pair of multi-colored sandals, which really can help you get in the mood for spring and summer. While the look may be outrageous, you will probably feel the earthy chic, hippie-slash-boho vibe that the sandals are trying to send.
