Perspective

April 28, 2010 @ 22:32

The debate can finally be put to bed. We can no longer compare Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin because there is no comparison.

However, while Ovechkin failed to lead his team to victory against an eighth seed and deserves criticism we must keep a little perspective on this. Remove the goaltenders from mix and although Ovechkin and the Capitals didn't play very well, they still dominated the Montreal Canadiens.

Montreal didn't win this series, the Capitals lost it, and Ovechkin, as leader of the team and arguably one of the best players in the world failed to get it done. Just like he failed to get it done last year, and just like he failed to get it done in the Olympics.

Make no mistake about it, what happened to the Ovechkin led Washington Capitals in the first round will not happen to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round because Sidney Crosby will not allow it to happen.

Ovechkin crumbles under pressure, Crosby thrives on it.

In some respects it's extremely unfortunate for the NHL as a whole. Pittsburgh will dominate Montreal like Washington did, but the puck will not be as friendly to the unbelievably lucky Jaroslav Halak when coming off the sticks of the Penguins.

If anyone thinks Halak is really that good, I feel sorry for you.

It will be a pointless series against Pittsburgh and deprive us what probably would have been a great series if the Pens and Caps had eventually met. Not good for the league.

Meanwhile, rejoice Hab fans, you have every right to, but again, let's keep this in perspective, the Habs managed to upset a better team while actually being dominated by them. It's whacky, and I'm sure the vast majority of you never dreamed it would happen.

Even Freeway Frank gave up on the Habs after game three. You can read it on his facebook. But at that point he had no idea that the Caps were poised to give it away.

Yes, enjoy it Hab fans because it almost ranks up there with the Leafs upset of the Islanders in '78, and their upset of Detroit in '93, but not quite because at least those Islander and Wing teams had some backbone.

It's interesting, while I write this posting there is a huge mob in downtown Montreal blowing horns and waving flags, which is rather ironic when you consider Hab fans have criticized Leaf fans for first round celebrations is previous years.

At least they're not rioting. Not yet anyway.

I invite you to listen to an audio version of "Habs Watch" Thursday afternoon with Freeway Frank as my special guest. It should be posted in the late afternoon.

Meanwhile, I'll leave you with this. It's a (typical?) Hab fan calling a phone in show after game four. Again, ironic when you consider how Hab fans criticize Leaf fans for their behaviour.

I apologize for displaying a clean Hab logo. I'm actually breaking policy.

Fred,

You got part of it right. Crosby and Ovi..no comparison. I agree.

But you can't criticize Halak's performance. I'm not even going to bother. Bottom line, the Caps lost in 7 when they were supposed to win in 4.

That's it, waaaaaaah, I'm a Leafs fan and life really sux tonight...waaaaaah.

And I never gave up on them. They are the first team in history to come back down 3-1 in the 1-8 format. Logic dictated it wasn't supposed to happen. I actually took Mtl (like a fool to most) night after night and won a lot of money.
Yep, another reason to hate me.

I'm disappointed Fred. In earlier posts you were given an "out". You should have taken it.

I'm no fan of Montreal Fred, and I'm no longer a fan of Toronto either: the constant mismanagement noted since the days after Pat Burns, and what's become essentially indifference towards ticket holders is well past disappointing.

The thing is, your comments are becoming trite. You hate the Habs and their fans: understood, loud and clear.

The "out" you had was in a recent post, where replies included those who believed your comments were "stirring the pot" for the sake of discussion. I didn't believe it then, and I don't believe it now. But you should have said you were.

You are a sports enthusiast. You have a history as a sports reporter. I know that you know about hockey, but your comments are increasingly becoming rants. What happened to being objective? Montreal didn't win? Sure they did. You may not like it, but they did. And yes, The Caps lost. And yes, maybe the pressure was too much on Ovi. But Montreal did win. The fortitude needed to come back when trailing by so much is the sign of a professional team. And their fans are a bit over the top? No doubt. Then again, take a look in the closest mirror.

Don't get me wrong Fred, I was a fan back in the CFNY days, and a huge supporter of MOJO (which indeed would have grown if left alone). I even gave Mix a try. I've enjoyed your blog for years. But Fred...you're really beginning to sound like nothing more than a poor loser.

Watch him say that Crosby is a loser or Fleury is a bad goalie or that an asteroid landed on earth and tilted it so that the puck was pulled by gravity away from the Montreal net.

You talk about Lapierre's diving and how that is not something a man should do if he considers himself a man? I agree. You know what is just as bad? Making excuses and poor ones at that it is very disgusting. If the leafs won in the same exact way, you would be saying totally different things so while I'm new to your blog, it's going to be short lived because I've lost interest based on your miniscule IQ. Good Day.

You're reaching, Fred.

They played well last night. Why is it that the team you hates doesn't win, the other team lost?

Sure Halak isn't the best goalie in the league, not even top 5 or maybe 10 but he played great in the last few games.
Lucky? Sometimes you make your own luck.

April 29, 2010 / 07:24

@Andrew
That's the point. Being outshot 42-16 means they didn't play well, but won anyways.

This reinforces what everyone already knows--that Hab fans are delusional about their team's skills (or lack thereof).

Personally think it's a great victory for Montreal. But don't convince yourself that your team is a cup contender.

JAMES
April 29, 2010 / 07:57

Fred's right. Washington lost it. I first thought the Habs were playing over their heads but further thought showed that the Caps played way under their potential. Is it good for the Habs fans? Of course. Sometimes you have to be lucky to be good.

Hey Fred! I heard Phil Kessel shot an 81 yesterday. He said it was the first time he 'd played golf in April but think it's something he will get used to. Go Habs Go! P.S. Big thanks go to Bob Gainey for having the vision to pick up Gomez, Gianta, Camaleri, Gill etc... All proven playoff winner's who are leading our Nations team to the Holy Grail!

I read that both Ovie and Semin skipped the optional skate on Tuesday in D.C.. The only two who didn't show.

Nice.

As for the Pittsburgh series the Habs are spent, done, gone. They had their Cup final in Series One and they'll face a team with real leadership even if he is a baby-faced scallop eater from Cole Harbour.

Seven games in the Post-Season. How many for the Leafs? You Leaf fans sound a lot like you have "My Dad will beat up your Dad mentality". The Habs won because they have heart, can't much say that about the Leafs. Fred, you would NEVER make on SportsNet as an announcer with your extreme bias.

Ray
April 30, 2010 / 10:52

No.. the Habs won because the Caps "don't" have heart.
You Hab fans are now completely over the top delusiional.
Pens in four.. four easy ones..

I read the article on weblogs before I leave a comment. If I have not anything to say about the piece topic, I do not leave any opinions. And I want to read anyone else’s observations on that post likewise. Because I find good ideas among the fine comments. I might have posted “Exceptional blog! Great posts!” then I could possibly be spamming your blog. I as well have a web-site, the first thing I will do every day when i signed onto my web-site is look into observations to my posts and physically approve or reject these remarks. Keywordluv as well as brings you more commenters. It raises your position in search engines due to you’re not only on a number of “dofollow blog lists” but also on a variety of those “keywordluv lists”. Thanks, Hannah
