couldn't agree with you more.
these kinds of stories re-affirm my belief that religion, in a nuthsell, is a fairy tale.
and, i find it incredibly hard to believe that so many people still, in light of all the evidence against the existence of any kind of God, believe in this stuff. educated, practical people too!
anyway, my parents too give me freedom of choice when it comes to religion. however, it was interesting when, recently, i was talking to them about my upcoming wedding next year. when i told them there would be no church and no religious component at all, i think they were quite bothered by that. i advised that i was going to hire an officiant to do a very quick informal ceremony to make it legal, but in their mind, it still doesn't count if it's not in the presence of God.
So, i expect a little guilt tripping to be laid onto me about this, but frankly, i don't care. And, i'd hate to think what would happen if i have a kid (which i probably will not)..i wouldn't want to go through a baptism or any other ritual for that matter because i'd feel like a complete hypocrite, so, the question is..do you go through with it to make others happy, or stick to your principles?

I agree freddie. I would like to attend Church sometime but they want you to be a member. My ex always mentions before we were married the minister asked what religion I was and there was silence. She nmentioned it again recently and I said "I'm a child of God'. Best religion there is.

Dickie was very wise in what he passed on to you Freddie P, my dad is about the same age as your dad was and passed the same kind of choice onto me (must have been a 60's Scarborough thing as most of my friends were brought up the same way). My dad growing up was Loyal order Orange, annual parade, never trust the Catholics or the French. Well WW2 came along and he was thrust into being shoulder to shoulder with these heathens he had been warned about. He soon found out his childhood teachings were bunk and these people were no different than him, enjoyed a beer, kibbitzing, having a good time and family first. He tossed his child hood teachings aside and vowed never to let religious teachings shape his kids opinions on people. He taught us to appreciate every individual for what they were on a human level. The Sikhs are no different than the Protestant Catholic conflicts that happened for much of the early years of Canada. Eventually the 2nd and 3rd generations will figure it out that the old country conflicts are just that Old world conflicts that bear as much relevance to me as conflicts in Scotland/Ireland and England today.

Relgion...one one sure way to get everyone's opinion. That's probably why it was invented, to get people to show some passion. Here in Vancouver, last weekend the 'Indo-community' held Vaisakhi - A celebration of their faith and the originator of the Sikhism. The week earlier an organizer had gone on the local station in surrey ( Red-fm ) and basically threatened two politicians, saying they wouldn't be responsible for their security should they show up. And then, although they agreed not to, the day of the parade, they had a float which showed known terrorists ( on the Canadian government terrorist list )Here's why i love my adopted city of Surrey, B.C. the mayor - Diane Watts - she has said on the record that she's sdone dealing with the organizers, and that more than likely, the parade will not happen next year ( in Surrey anyway ) Guess my point is, Brampton needs this kind of leadership. Ontario needs this kind of leadership. Canada needs this kind of leadership.
