The Budget And The Anthem

March 5, 2010 @ 08:33

I know what you're thinking. If Patterson's writing about the budget and the anthem it will be another stroke job on his bum chum hero Stephen Harper.

Pretty much.

I've maintained over the past couple of years that I fully endorse the job the Conservatives have done while steering us through a global recession with a minority government. I think the budget is sensible and right for the moment.

Needless to say Stephen Harpers detractors are painting it as a vicious right wing document that attacks societies most vulnerable, but that's par for the course. In their eyes the guy can't do anything right.

Michael Ignatieff and Jack Layton did their jobs yesterday. They attempted to poke holes in the budget and came forth with the predictable crap. The problem is neither one of them, but especially the Liberals, can offer up anything better.

Ignatieff represents an interesting problem for the Liberals. While the party enjoys an undeserved popularity across the country, especially in Ontario, Ignatieff is like a large stinky coiler hanging around their necks.

The longer the Liberals keep this lame duck around, the worse it's going to be for them. People talk about Harpers stiffness and lack of personality but what about Ignatieff? Every day he remains as leader, is another chance for Harper to look better.

Canadians in growing numbers are rejecting this guy and eventually it's going to affect the Liberals over-all status. Screw the polls, I really think if an election was held today, the Conservatives would get their majority and Ignatieff would be mostly responsible.

What does this have to do with the budget? This. If Ignatieff thinks the document is so bad, why doesn't he make another move to bring down the government? Why doesn't he roll out something better that the other two parties simply can't resist?

Answer - because he can't, because he's afraid.

And now the anthem. Was it a diversionary tactic, designed to get people talking about something else just before the budget was handed down? Maybe. I know a lot of people would like to think so, but what in the budget was so terrible that Harper would need to go to such great lengths to divert attention?

Why would he want to take attention away from freezing MP's salaries, or the scaling back of big government, or the freeze on foreign aid, or increase in research and development?

Taxes aren't going up; old age pensions aren't being touched our Olympic athletes will continue to be supported.

If anything, I think the anthem issue was raised as a feeble attempt to appease women on the heels of a two week patrotic love-in.

Funny thing is, I don't think enough women give a shit.

Well, I certainly don't give a sh*t, Fred. I'm far more concerned by the number of times our anthem has already been messed with than with its gender-specific nouns. I don't agree with Mr. Harper on this one.

Again a Conservative gov't is indicating that by stiffing the workers the deficit will be fixed. Ben's father tried this and didn't balance any books. Chretien tried and realized don't stiff the workers, stiff the Provinces and via Martin it worked. Perhaps if they put some figures on the table it would seem real but they won't as it's amounts to next to nothing. As for the wokers, the 1.5% raises they get amounts to next to nothing too..$10 more a week...so the gov't can keep the money and send it to Conservative ridings. Nothing new. Totally transparent and looking through that glass window is nothing---at all. And with Iggy or Laytie---nothing would be different as shown for yrs and yrs. As for Harper---he is doing the best he can. And so is Brian Burke.

This whole anthem argument is nothing new. Every government throws it out there when they want to distract people from what they just announced. They aren't planning on changing it- and never will. The throne speech was JUST released, yet all people seem to be concerned about is 1 word in the National Anthem. A distraction ploy that worked like a charm.

Teflon McGuinty's also a master of this. Nothing more than a smokescreen for what the true issue is.

Cambo: they call their smokescreens transparency. You can still see through smoke but it ain't as clear as they say.

Frankly nobody can comment on the budget. Since none of the other parties have come up with alternative strategies how can you begin to compare?

You might not like the budget, but that is fine, its a result of, in my mind the left-wing type spending from last year. This is the natural result of such spending. This is the reason why Layton and Ignatieff have nothing to say, their fiscal strategies do not deal with cutting back, but rather spending and taxing more.

I had to laugh last week at Layton who said that we should not give tax breaks to businesses to spur the economy, but rather give tax breaks to seniors so they can go down the street and buy a cup of tea... by doing so, it will create jobs. What made it even funnier is that he was serious and chuckling to himself that any other way of thinking was stupid. Joke is on you Jack. You're a knob. Have another pint on me down at Gretzky's.

Freddie, the fact you are not ripping Harper a new one for this moronic idea to change the anthem lyrics confirms once and for all (not that it was ever truly in doubt) that you are nothing more than a complete and utter shill for him.

Let's get serious - if that gasbag Jack Layton was PM and suggested something like this (and this is EXACTLY the type of shit he would propose and you know it) your keyboard would have been smoking 5 minutes after you heard about it. Same for McGuinty. But Pretty Boy Harper can do no wrong.

You're exactly like Don Cherry in this respect: a good ol boy from Kingston can commit an egregious act on the ice and it will be an example of good Canadian character while a European that does the same thing will get ripped. The act is irrelevant to its characterization - what matters is who did the act. You're both entertaining but neither one of you can be taken seriously.

All Iggy could do was feebly accept the Tory budget and squeak out something about how the Libs will support it until they can provide Canadians with an alternative. Here's a thought, Mike - you might have taken advantage of the prorogue, have your gang put their heads together and come up with a Liberal alternative budget (with specifics) that would clearly outline how you would move the country forward to recovery. Nope. That would have been the smart thing to do. Instead it seems they used the time to...hmmm, well who knows?

Mikey,

Ya I remember. Welcome to Canadian Politics. You can do anything you want, because the voters forget by the end of the week.

I also remember all the promises McGuinty made... so what's your point?

A pair of sandals can be worn with whatever you like and you will find that a pair of casual thong sandals can come with a heel or they can be flat flip-flops. If you are looking for something for casual use, you could take a look at the variety of summer shoes that make up the Steve Madden shoe collection.

Why is Creating a Mosque at Ground Zero actually sanctioned to occur? I've never heard something so altogether brainless in all my entire life. If this at any time reaches actuality, It will likely be the worst thing of all time. yolanda
