Much Ado?

March 13, 2010 @ 16:45

My oh my, there's quite the battle taking place over at TorontoMike.com. Mike took issue with a couple of white guy Hab fans who showed up at a game the other night with black shoe polish on their faces and afro wigs on their heads.

Seems they were there in support of Hab's rookie PK Subban who was sent back down to the farm club in Hamilton. Oh yea, Subban is black.

To be honest, I don't know if what these guys did was racist or not. I've lost track of what and what isn't racist anymore. The line has become terribly blurred for me. On one hand the most innocent of statements or gestures are blown out of proportion while on the other hand, more often than I'd like to, I hear black people refer to each other as "you know what."

The word racist has been been so battered, bruised and mis-used over the past several years it really has lost a lot of it's meaning.

If anything what's going on over at Mike's blog is a fine example of where politic correctness has gotten us - running around in circles over-reacting to just about everything.

It's obvious the two guys in the stands didn't mean to be racist but that doesn't seem to matter. I imagine if they went to the trouble of blackening their faces, wearing wigs and paying to have "Subbanator" jerseys made up, they weren't there because they don't like the kid.

On the contrary, Subban was a second round draft pick who's risen through the ranks and now is threatening to become a full time Canadien. He played very well during a two game call-up before the Olympics, so I can't imagine the two Mr. Dressups sat at home and thought up ways to insult the developing Hab. If I know Monteal fans the way I think I do, they probably love the guy.

Was it in bad taste? I can't even answer that question any more. Yes, there's a shameful history of minstrel shows and the stereotypes attached, but it's a leap to compare that to this.

It's common place for fanatics to paint themselves up before attending sporting events and I think that was the basis of what happened here, unfortunately for them, the guys involved didn't delve far enough back in history to consider, measure, contemplate and /or sympathize over things that happened decades ago. The silly buggers.

Was it stupid? This is one question I can answer. Yes it was. Given todays PC world, it was a no-winner. They should have thought of that even if they meant no harm.

One of the people who comments on Mike's Blog makes a great point. Isn't it amazing that that Don Cherry can go relatively unchecked for most of the past 25 years insulting European hockey players, yet a couple of guys show up in support of PK Subban at a Habs game and they're immediately labeled racist.

How screwy is that?

I've spent the better part of the past half hour googling the incident and I can't find any reaction from Subban himself. Maybe somebody should ask him. Maybe he liked it.

But to the politically correct, that probably wouldn't matter either. It would get in the way of their agenda.

Meanwhile, check this out. It's the pilot for a new show my son Danny is involved with. He's the fine young fella in the green t-shirt.

Anyway, about 2:20 into the clip, PK Subban makes an appearance, and I'm sure you'll appreciate his sense of humour.

Don Cherry has not gone unchecked. He was almost thrown off the air a couple of years ago (I believe he was suspended at one point) and now CC is on a delay.

Please. Cherry has gotten away with murder!

Well said Freddie. It's hard to judge anything anymore because of all the self righteous hypocrits out there.
It was stupid. But not the end of the world either.

To use a hockey analogy, look at it this way. Was there intent to injure? I don't think so.

There's making fun of and then there's support. I would suggest the
boys were supporting the young hockey player.

Maybe it was done without malace, but the black face and afros?? You have to be really stupid not to realize the implications of that! Common sense should tell you how wrong that is.

Well said Freddie. Those two Hab fans made a mistake... P.K.'s afro is much shorter.

There is no defending these guys, but there's evidence of a racist act either. How does the saying go, imitation is the highest form of flattery.
It's not that big a deal

I find it bizarre that a few months ago you wrote how you were offended by a commercial where a woman bodychecks a man. I seem to remember that you felt the violence shown against men to be offensive.

Either way, you found it to be objectionable enough to form a strongly negative opinion about it.

But two douchebags show up to a hockey game in freaking Black Face and you 'can't really say' if it's even in bad taste??

That just seems ridiculous to me. Lets get worked up about a commercial where a female hockey player bodychecks a man, but lets chill out about this Black Face thing.

I know many are sick of political correctness (and I often am too), but finding these actions to be stupid and offensive is not being politically correct. It's just being reasonable and respectful.

James
March 14, 2010 / 17:51

I'm not saying that this is a big deal by the way. These guys didn't commit a capital offense. And I'm not saying they're racist.

But showing up to a hockey game in a black face with Afros is stupid and offensive, and these two are clearly idiots. (Just as it would be stupid and offensive if they wore a big fake nose to support a Jewish player, or big comical turbans to support Nazim Khadri).

Gene
March 14, 2010 / 18:16

A weird comparison. I think Freddie's point about the commercial was the positioning of men in a lot of today's commercials. Dumb, punching bags.
It wasn't the violence that was offensive, it was the double standard. We're still waiting for the commercial that has the man running over the woman.
Won't happen. Meanwhile, it seems you're a lot more worked up over the black face than Freddie was over the double standard. But it probably makes you feel like a hero.

James
March 14, 2010 / 18:31

Haha.. Oh yeah. This has made me feel very heroic.

I like Fred, and I like his blog. I just think his wishy washy reaction to this seems more like an attempt to be anti-politically correct than anything else. That's what annoys me about it.

PK=future Star..another player the Leafs wish they had. I was watching the game on RDS and Pierre Houde (play by play guy) was just as shocked when the camera pointed to them..saying.."I don't know what to say" Truth is, they are PK fans but it was a terrible idea!

Randy

How about this James, let’s play the hypothetical game.

What if these guys really do like Subban? (They probably do)
What if they meant absolutely no harm to the man? (Which they probably didn’t)
What if they are the farthest thing from racist you can find, and that’s why they didn’t think twice about doing what they did? (Possibility)

For the moment, give them the benefit of the doubt and then answer these questions. What exactly is wrong with a black face and afro?
Is it distasteful? Is it something PK Subban should be ashamed of? Is imitating the appearance of some people OK, but not others? Are black people so fragile that they can’t handle someone mimicking the way they look, even when it’s meant to be complimentary?

I think the answer to all these questions is NO.

The biggest insult through all of this are the actions of those who take it upon themselves to protect those who probably don’t want or need their protection.

I'm tired of Don Cherry - I don't even bother to watch Coaches Corner for entertainment anymore, but I will say one thing in the guy's defense. "European" is not a race. He may be critical of how they play the game, but that doesn't mean he's racist.

March 14, 2010 / 21:46

I hate how so many people today are politically correct and often too afraid to offend.

Having said that, it was a stupid stunt by these two knobs. Did they think it was funny? If they did, they're both stupid and lack any sense of comedy. I wouldn't call them racists but they clearly are dumb and more importantly not funny.

If you want to run the risk of offending an entire race, at least be funny about it. Is that too much to ask?

And amen to what El Torpedo wrote.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why is okay to paint your face red and wear a funny wig or blue with a funny wig? I'm asking because you see it at sporting events all the time. These guys painted their faces black so they could look like their idol. Not to mock him. I think the critics, hypocrites and PC cops really need to grow up...this has all gone far enough...
