Justice Unserved

March 27, 2010 @ 11:34

It was a sad day for justice in the United States yesterday. Once again it was proved that there is a law for the rich and a law for the poor.

Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards was sentenced to a laughingly lax 30 days in a halfway house for bringing four guns into the Verizon Centre back in December.

It stemmed from a confrontation with a team mate. It was a disgusting act that was an insult to Wizards, their fans and the NBA as a whole. Yesterday's decision was an insult to every citizen of the United States.

The District of Columbia, which has one of the highest crime rates in the US has extremely tough gun laws, and after yesterdays ruling it was the general consensus of most lawyers that if Arenas had been a regular citizen, he definitely would have gone to jail.

Believe me, I'm not about to pretend this kind of thing couldn't happen in Canada, because it could, but after spending several minutes googling "Canada / athlete / gun / locker room" I couldn't come up with a similar case.

I've made it clear before, I'm not a fan of the NBA and a lot of it stems from the creeps and thugs that tend to inhabit the league. Yesterday just makes it worse. A man who makes eleven million dollars a year, a man who can afford the best in defense and man who probably had the league at this back, walked away from something and that you and I would dearly pay for.

It sucks, it blows and smells like a rat.

A very sad day.

I'm not really sure there are any more creeps and thugs in the NBA than in any other major league.

I mean, you're an NFL fan, right? In the past few years there's been guys charged with murder, a guy charged with bringing a gun into a nightclub and shooting and having his gun accidentally go off, and a guy who ran a dog fighting ring. I'd say that's a lot worse than anything that's gone on in the NBA the past few years.

There's some major A-holes in hockey and baseball too.

March 27, 2010 / 17:28

Come on JP. Guns in the locker room trumps everything when it comes to directly affecting the league. Of course there are a-holes in every league, but without taking inventory I'm inclinded to go with the Fred on this one. The NBA takes the cake.

JP
March 27, 2010 / 17:38

Moreso than the NFL? Michael Vick, Ray Lewis (murder charge), the guy (who's name slips my mind) who brought a loaded gun into a nightclub? And those are just in the past few years.

March 27, 2010 / 19:35

Again Fred I just do not see why this has you so bent. The guns were not loaded and you can't seriously think Gilbert Arenas was a threat to actually start shooting the place up even if they were loaded. Yeah there's a law in DC but you know that is intended for gang members - this offence by Arenas was akin to driving without an expired driver's license. As for other athletes toting guns into locker rooms you must have missed this article about the Orioles' Luke Scott.

http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2010-02-27/sports/bal-sp.osnotes27feb27_1_marc-agar-brian-matusz-gun

I carry no water for the NBA - I have not seen a game since Dr. J retired. But your reaction is completely over the top to a very minor infraction. Did you have venom like this for Craig McTavish or Rob Ramage when they actually killed people while committing their crimes?

This is the disturbing part to me:

"We're not going to void his contract. As I've said all along, he's going to be with us," Grunfeld said Saturday night before a game against Utah. "Gilbert is a part of this organization, he's part of our team, and he will be back with us next year. I think people forget that he's still one of the best players in this league."

I dont care if hes the second coming of Michael Jordan, if you or I bring a gun to work, we get fired and our employer never lets us back in the door.
The NFL pissed me off royally letting Michael Vick resume his career with them....These sports leagues do it for a buck nothing more
Latrell Spreewell choking his coach, how is that allowed back into his former job no matter what team he played for afer...
Its unbelievabel the fantasy world athletes live in, and in a couple weeks while it doesn;t match up to the above, golf is going to put a scum bag on a pedestal as the welcome him back to the Masters....like he really went anywhere....
All it shows kids these days is that you can screw up royally, even break the law and you can still get your old job back when in fact that is not reality.

It always bothered me that Craig McTavish became a well respected NHL coach after driving into someone apparently drunk.

@Contrarian

1.Minor infraction? I don't think so. By the book, he should be in jail, and like it or not he has an obligation to the NBA to stay clean.

2. Luke Scott. I wasn't aware of this. He's an asshole, but really, it doesn't match what Arenas did. For all we know he could be bullshitting.

3. Please search Rob Ramage on this site and you'll see how I feel about that.

4. The McTavish incident was almost 26 years ago. I didn't have a site back then to write about it, but he did serve a full year in prison. Not nearly enough, but the laws have changed a lot since then.

I have a feeling there is some sensitive over-protection for the NBA taking place here.

March 29, 2010 / 09:50

What's worse, this millionaire jerk-off getting soft time in a halfway house, or the 2 scumbags here in Toronto walking from a mistrial for killing the Manners kid because the 2 key witnesses changed their story because of intimidation by gang members? Without their testimony, and due to bungling by the cops over the gun residue evidence, there's no point wasting time and money on another trial. They'll walk again. Shameful and sad.

Hey Fred

Thanks for responding. Would like to continue discussing this with you. At bottom I want to know why you think this is NOT a minor infraction. I have many reasons for thinking it is minor:

1 - He bought the guns legally in Virginia
2 - They were not loaded when he took them into the arena
3 - In most states in the USA what he did was not illegal
4 - That this act is illegal in DC is in response to gang-related issues and Arenas is not a gang member
5 - I do not think it is credible to believe he was an actual threat to start shooting the place up (even if the guns were loaded which they were not)

The fact I referenced baseball and hockey players was merely in response to your self-admission that you do not like the NBA. Those were rhetorical devices only designed to point out that (a) other athletes have toted guns into locker rooms and (b) other athletes have committed offences far more egregious than what Arenas did no matter how egregious you characterize Arenas' actions - to the extent they distracted you from answering my real question (i.e. why are you so bent over this) I wish I had not raised them.

I must add though that I take some offence at the suggestion (if your comment was intended for me) that I am some sort of NBA fan. I made it quite clear in my response that I am not an NBA fan. If your comment was intended for me then you are calling me a liar and arguing in bad faith. I trust that is not the case and that you will explain why you think what Arenas did was NOT a minor infraction. We may end up agreeing to disagree and that's fine. But I am genuinely curious to know your rationale because in the absence of any I think your reaction is completely over the top.

Freddie P.
March 29, 2010 / 19:03

@Contrarian

I'm "over the top" because the optics are so bad and I don't know how many times I have to say it, lawyers in DC, not attached to the case were amazed that he didn't get any "time." Gun laws have become very strict in DC.
For an NBA star to bring a gun into the stadium, loaded or not, and then use it as a threat towards another athlete is way over the top.
It's a bad example for kids, a huge blemish on the NBA and disappointing to the fans.
Forget about comparing it to other cases. I was writing and talking about "this" case after the day the verdict came down.
If the law in DC is directed at gang members, why the hell was he "acting" like a gang member?
And when I was talking about NBA sympathizer I was not referring to you directly.
I

Thanks for taking the time to respond. As I thought may be the case we will just have to agree to disagree. But that's cool - I think it is generally more interesting to disagree than to agree.

Cheers
