Fred,
You forgot to add Ivor Biggun and Red-nosed Burglars
to your list of artist as well.
March 30, 2010 / 08:57
"shitting yellow"....ha ha!
March 30, 2010 / 09:56
Virtually every current song title that I include in my occasional music list entries, which get deleted after awhile, fits into that H&O's alongside The Chameleons UK etc., vibe. Yet it's all new stuff (including Cheap Trick).
March 30, 2010 / 10:04
You did little to create that magic.
March 30, 2010 / 10:30
@NY'er
Why thank you. What a nice thing to say!
March 30, 2010 / 10:42
Hey Fred. Who's the bitter coward (NY'er) who won't sign their name? Don't fret over an anonymous candyass.
Jason
March 30, 2010 / 10:54
Fred I also have wide range in musical tastes. My Ipod is filled with classic rock or pop songs that I can plug into my amp and play along with my guitar.
"Camp fire songs".
Your pool parties at your folks were always full of great tunes. I only listened to CFNY in the am to hear what you were discussing.
But now I find I am a button pusher , jumping from station to station. There's always something good on.
Saw David Clayton Thomas and the TSO at Massey Hall last month. Best show I have seen in years.
Cheers,
Al
ps. NY'er. F..k U. Is that the best you got?
An anonymous post.
Why bother.
March 30, 2010 / 11:28
I started listening to CFNY in late '78. If you drove east of Yonge street you lost the signal. I remember Brad Mcnalley, Jim Reed, the live Earl Jive and all others. Pete and Geets had the best morning show ever. Some of your bits in the morning still make me laugh. I'll never forget when you wanted a Pizza delivered to a bus as it passes highway 10 on the 401. What happened to radio. there is no imagination anymore. You won't like this but I haven't listened to earth bound radio since I got satellite radio. Once and I while I listen to Marsden on the Rock. I remember your interview with Pete Griffin who said about the same thing. Radio is nothing but a delivery system for advertising.
March 30, 2010 / 12:24
...and I love boxcar willie, doesn't mean I'm a bad guy!
March 30, 2010 / 13:49
Thanks Freddie.
You're completely right - music is a completely subjective thing. It's just that of all the people i've known over the years who were really into cfny (and thus bands like the smiths, propaganda, clash, joy division), 9 times out of 10 they wouldn't also enjoy a group like hall and oates or other mainstream acts.
Some argue however that a true music lover is supposed enjoys ALL music, including country, rap, classical and stuff with accordions.
I am not one of those people.
By the way, i completely disagree with NY'er Fred. You were an integral part of the magic of that radio station. The Spirit of Radio wasn't just about the cutting edge new music, it was the personalities.
Distinct announcers who said what they thought, made mistakes on air, were passionate about the music they were playing and the profession they were in.
You, Pete n Geets were the soundtrack of my mornings back then. James Scott in the afternoons, Skot Turner at night, Chris Sheppard on weekends. Also loved hearing Maie Pauts, Dani Elwell, Earl and Beverly Hills Sunday mornings, Don Berns and of course, the Mars Bar.
It was an unforgettable time for an unforgettable radio station.
March 30, 2010 / 15:37
I am happy to say i"m one of those people who worked with Freddie back in the day doing mid days for 8 years. FYI i did play Hall and Oates mainly from Abandoned Lunchonette and Across the Red Line in the early 80's. H and O were always one of my guilty pleasures and of my girlfriend at the time. Every time they played i knew i was in for a great night. As people age their musical tastes change just like their lifestyle. The main thing is to keep listening to something as i find music theraputic and something that keeps you young. As Marsden once told me it's ok to visit the past but i wouldn't want to live there.
March 30, 2010 / 16:44
Great words from Marsden J.R.. More people should keep that in mind.
Jason
March 30, 2010 / 17:32
Others may laugh Freddie, but I say it takes a real man to admit he likes Hall & Oates. I can see you on the dancefloor now!
Oh oh, here she comes, watch out boy, she`ll chew you up!
Oh oh, here she comes, she`s a maneater!
Pure gold.
March 30, 2010 / 18:29
J.R. - it's funny you mention that, because it's true we all tend to look back at that era of cfny with rose coloured glasses, and there were probably more than a few songs you guys put into rotation back then which were..well..let's just say classic cfny material.
of course i'm not talking about the michael jackson/madonna year(s), but there was a fair bit of cheesy "new wave" out there too. for instance, i never quite got the appeal of oingo boingo (dead man's party).
i went to the cfny reunion in 2003 and picked up those cd's they were giving out with airchecks from some of the old announcers. you'd hear them coming out of songs and backselling the set, and much of it wasn't to my personal liking, but probably was to many other cfny listeners.
i just had a look at some of the "best of" top songs of the year from the cfny lists over at spiritofradio.ca.
Here are a couple of examples of stuff that never struck a chord with me, but were in the top tier:
#6 in '86 - Paul Simon's Graceland (absolutely hate that song!)
#20 in '87 - La Bamba soundtrack (wtf?!!!!)
#35 in '85 - Dire Straits / Brothers in arms lp ("money for nothing and your chicks for free on this i'm guessing? yikes!)
and, if memory servs JR, did u guys spin right said fred's i'm too sexy?
March 30, 2010 / 21:14
I dont like Hall and Oates, but then again I guess they're the lesser of evils compared to other bands or artists from the 80's, although not by much.
March 30, 2010 / 21:42
Great topics. CFNY was an integral part of my teen and early adult years. My vinyl and CD collection was based on bands I first discovered on CFNY. The music was varied and not main stream.
Music was complimented by CFNY's great publicity department - events at the Aqua Duck in Welland, Live feeds from the Carlsburg pavilion at the CNE, etc. Many of my memories from that era can be tied to the music and CFNY.
I still proudly display my Spirit of Radio bumpersticker in my office.
Fred - you and all the others who worked on and off air at CFNY made it the best radio of it's time in Toronto. Sadly, the closest I have now is XM44.
March 30, 2010 / 23:22
Seen many 'fights' over what to play at a party or get together. People get very passionate and opinionated over tunes. As for radio, it's not the music but the personalities that make it. For awhile music was free to download as the music industry's arrogance got in the way. Most people should have all they need to lsiten to.
March 31, 2010 / 11:25
XM deep tracks is a great listen. If you like rock you'll love this. You will hear stuff by bands you know but stuff that never got air-play. I've heard Hall & Oates there; their real old stuff. I listen to this all day at work and it never fail's to surprise me. When is the last time earth bound radio has done this. I know Fred is trying his best but under the rules we have now creativity isn't going to happen.
April 1, 2010 / 00:01
Jake, you can still download music for free, you just gotta know where to look. Torents are pretty popular today.
April 1, 2010 / 09:39

I read the content on websites when I leave a review. If I have got next to nothing to say of the write-up topic, I might not leave any opinions. And I prefer to read someone else’s views on that post also. Because I can also find interesting ideas from the high-quality comments. I would have posted “Superior blog! Outstanding posts!” then I could possibly be spamming your blog. I also have got a web site, the very first thing I'd personally do each day after i signed on my webpage is have a look at commentary to my articles or blog posts and personally approve or reject these responses. Keywordluv as well as brings you more commenters. It increases your position in search engines because you’re not merely on plenty of “dofollow blog lists” but in addition on a number of those “keywordluv lists”. Thank you, Sara

Who ever imagined the considered building a mosque at ground zero could be advisable? I'm no great fan of both Glen Beck or Sarah Palin on the other hand in comparison with Obama and the ridiculous administration, this pair are geniuses, come on The states, there's a little bit of unusual stuff happening here. Jessica.

A blog is a weblog, or a chronological way to list and share information about whatever topic the blogger wants, letting anyone get recognized as an expert source in their field.

Think about it, who’re the folks who will be observing this shit and continue to keep making it well-known? Show after show, paper after newspaper!
September 23, 2010 / 14:59
Men and women would like a particular person to idolise and glamorize ; I really don't . Those who are popular for being famous take a rediculous amount of space in our lives and are also excessively overpayed.

If you want to print photos from your iPad to a wireless Canon printer, use the free Canon application called Easy Photo-Print for iPhone. Unfortuantely, this app will only print photos, not text.

When you flip on the page on an iPad it gives you the same experience as touching the pages of the book except that you don't feel the paper texture.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.

I don't know what Ciara has been up to for the past several months. It's already been a long time since she released her nasty song Ride with that exciting music video! Ludacris appears to get his releases on time, so what happened to Ciara? I can't wait for Ciara's next album, Basic Instinct, to drop. It is truly killing me.
