Freddie, I have worked in the Consumer Electronics and Appliance business as a service manager for the last 36 years.
Although, it's the manufacturers who make the "stuff" it's ultimately the consumers (and I am one of them) who control what is being made.
Today, the majority of consumer want the latest technology and they want it "cheap" but still expect the "stuff" to last like in the good old days.
Well, we get the latest technology (with a lot of electronic components) and in most cases it's priced cheap compared to what we used to pay (i.e. a 26" Console TV with 13 VHF channels and a bunch of UHF channels, mono sound, was selling for over a thousand dollar back in 1980)
Fast forward to today, a 42" LCD TV with over 180 Channels, ATSC tuner, HD 1080P Resolution, several HDMI imputs, component inputs, PC inputs, and the list goes on, sells for $800.00 in today's dollar. You do the math.>>>> Great technology: YES, cheap: YES, longevity: Keep on dreaming. And this applies to the Chinese crap all the way to the top brand names.
Be prepared to replace them at least every 5 years, most likely they will crap out sooner and int most cases we have to inform the consumer that it is not economical to repair the unit.
And the bottom line is, the manufacturer don't make much money at all. Just read the business news and see how Sony, Sanyo, etc. are constantly bleeding red in their Consumer Electronic Divisions.
Having said all of the above, I don't blame you for being pissed off. Hey, as I said, I am a consumer too and I actually just replaced all my kitchen appliances just over a year ago. Knowing the ins and outs in this business I purposely stayed away from any fanzy appliances and chose Whirlpool. Well guess what Freddie, my VERY basic fridge crapped out on me within 3 months of taking delivery. Thank god it's still under the one year warranty.!!Guess where I parked my food until the fridge was repaired?? You guessed it, in my spare but power guzzling 40 years old beast in the basement!!!
My washer and dryer are both over 30 years old and still going strong. But guess what, my wife wants to buy some fanzy new looking ones which are Energy Star rated. ( I guess she hasn't learned her lesson from the fridge yet!!)
This time around I am staying put until the old but reliable machines bite the dust. Because, I know what's going to happen once I replace them with the new "high tech" stuff.!!!

I think my 1953 Westinghouse is better for the environment than the new disposable items David Suzuki is always trying to convince us to buy. I would have replaced at least 10- 12 units in that time frame, which would be worst for the environment. My uncle left a fridge outside for 10 years, we kept patching the rust up with sheetmetal until we couldn't get another screw into it. Compressor and the single mechanical control never failed. It was a mid 60's model.
Not only hardware like fridges and stoves are becoming obsolete after 5 years, Microsoft releases a piece of crap software every 4 years which doesn't support that 5 year old printer scanner you have forcing you to toss it and buy a new one.
In the medical equipment business the manufacturers pull support after 5-7 years after a product is discontinued forcing hospitals and consumers to purchase new products. In the 80's and early 90's we could tell our customers that they would be covered for at least 12-15 years for support.
Going green my a$$.

I had a Westighouse beer fridge about the same age that Rick C mentions. It was still running fine a year ago when I finally had it hauled away and never used nearly as much Hydro as that goof Suzuki claims. But getting back to Samsung, they make great electronic products, but their fridges are throw-away. A friend of mine had a new one crap out and it could not be repaired because the tubing that was leaking, or whatever, was encapsulated inside the insulation. All my domestic made fridges have lasted at least 20 years with no service calls.

Environmentally it is best to manufacture a product once and have it last for 50 years with only small repairs and tune-ups. Manufacturing 10 products in that time frame produces more pollution, environmental damage an waste than the change in efficency of products over the last 50 years. The economists won't like it, but like I said before, there isn't an easy solution. My suggestion is mandatory long-term warranties on products. Force manufacturer's to make quality product and you kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

we bought a washing machine from Sears some years ago. The salesman ask us at the time if we wanted to buy the extended warrenty as part of the sales package. I laughed because I couldn't believe they were already pushing the fact a brand new thing was going to break very soon and that their "Team Sears" forces would have to come in & fix it at $70 plus parts, which was their minimum fee at the time. Imagine that. Buying a brand new piece of shit. I remember asking him why push the extended warrenty, dont you guys stand behind your product? Doesn't Sears sell quality products? Anywho, we bought it, $500 & within a year she broke. Being a jack-handy type I figured out the problem & called a local appliance company who happens to pick up on this sales crap,told them the problem & before I could say any more, they had the part which I installed...for 15 bucks.I bought 2 parts for 30 bones just in case ( he told me I really wont have to, 1 is fine). The moral of the storey for us is, support your local Appliance Dealer who sells quality fridges, stoves ect... they stand behind their product. P.S. I still haven't replaced that part...

It's not just Samsung, and it's not just high-tech stuff. It's manufacturing in general I think. I bought a no frills Kenmore fridge from Sears about 5 years ago. No icemaker, no LCD panel, no nothing. Standard freezer/fridge. I chose it because I'm always of the mind that the more features something has, the more likely it is that something will go wrong. Turns out I was wrong. Within a year, the damn thing went on the fritz and basically froze everything in the fridge compartment over the course of the day and night. Same thing happened with my bar fridge. Now I know Kenmore isn't a real appliance manufacturer - the fridge is likely made by Frigidaire, and that's my point. Most of the appliances and electronics are basically using parts manufactured by just a very few handful of companies, and they don't seem to be doing a very good job.

Up at the trailer in the shed I have a refrigerator that has to be twenty years old. It's a General Electric and year after year after year it never lets me down.
