Neither total medals, nor just the number of golds gives the whole picture. Those numbers are just used by countries selectively to put themselves at the top. Perhaps a points system should be used to rank countries, like 3, 2 and 1, or 4, 2 and 1 for gold, silver and bronze. Even then, that would put the U.S. in top as of this morning. However, total medals gives countries with a large population an advantage over countries with a small population. Counting just the golds seems more fair to smalled countries.

Agreed Freddie.
Canada and US are the only nations that use total medals to quantify
top country. Everyone else uses number of Golds.
Regardless of what happens with the hockey game, this has been an
astonishing Winter Games for Canada and well deserved to all the
athletes regardless of where the placed.
I'm having a very Un-Canadian feeling of overwhelming pride and
patriotism this weekend. More so than usual I might add.
Jaysey Jay winning today was the icing on the cake for me. This guy is
the elder statesman of snowboarding in Canada and went out with one
hell of a bang.
Go Canada Go!

There should dedinitely be a point system in place. It's silly that they formally count total medals won and rank countries by that, even though a bronze represents a third place finish. As someone notes above, very simply:
Gold = 3 points
Silver=2 points
Bronze = 1 point.
That's the simplest and fairest way to rank total points and standings in Olympic competitions.
Not sure why they don;t do that.

It's simple math: Canada has one-tenth the population of USA, and still we won more gold medals than they did. I'd definitely say that's owning the podium.

No one remembers second or third, just who won. The gold medal count is the true indicator of who owns the podium period.
