Not Enough

January 31, 2010 @ 12:26

The Toronto Maple Leafs traded a shit load of players today, and if you care about the Leafs I'm sure you know who they are.

But to my mind, Brian Burke missed the boat by not making the most obvious move. He didn't fire coach Ron Wilson.

It doesn't matter who the Leafs bring to town because it's obvious they won't be coached to the level they need to be.

What ails the Maple Leafs had little to do with Matt Stajan or Ian White, but it had everything to do with a lousy system and bad habits that a coach is responsible for.

Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the trades because at this point, it can't hurt, but icing on the cake would have been the announcement that Wilson is gone as well.

It's a frustrating situation for Leaf fans, and Burke would never admit it, but Wilson remains with the Leafs exclusively because of his ties to Team USA. It would look bad for Burke, who hired Wilson for both the Leafs and the American National team, to fire the guy just days before the Olympics start.

How weird is that, the Toronto Maple Leafs suffer because of Team USA.

It's beyond stupid. Wilson should be outa here.

Freddie, come on man have some faith, a coach is only as good as his players and the talent on the team...Phaneuf, Kaberle, Schenn? What a Blue Line you guys are gonna have.

Burke will never fire Wilson. They are friends from way back when they played for Providence College together. How does that old saying go-- never hire family or friends.

Quit scapegoating Wilson. Look at the roster. Then look at it again. Yes, someone's trying to pass that off as an NHL team. Toe Blake, with Scotty Bowman and Al Arbor as his assistants, might have been able to get 3 or 4 more points out of this sad bunch.

Wilson is fine. He's a sarcastic bastard and some people don't like it. You'll be able to tell which players had their feelings hurt by which players get traded next. Poor babies.

In addition to trying to bring better players to the team, the trade also acts as a buffer to get the Olympics over and done before Burke fires Wilson. The trade allows him to say, "Lets see what this lineup can do before more steps are made."

You have to give everything some time. The whole problem with the Leafs and the fans is that there is no patience... everything has to be done yesterday or its too long. We've waited this long, just relax and watch the tragic comedy continue to unfold.

The Leafs just gave away 1/3 of their total goal output and 140 total points (goals & assists). Where is that going to be made up? You think the season has been bad so far you ain't seen nothin yet!!

This set of trades was a mea culpa for Burke while giving Ron Wilson a mulligan.

Yesterday managed to wipe away the the grim feelings in Leafland and has now set the bar for other trades in the works. Wilson, sadly, will be coach for at least the rest of the year. And from a management standpoint, it makes little sense to fire a friend who you are running an olympic team with.

Yesterday was only the beginning, there is a very good chance the Leafs have started a domino effect in the NHL in terms of trades, Kaberle will have his ice time reduced for a guy like Phanuef to log big minutes and hopefully remove his no trade clause and the Poni express is well on his way out.

Without trying to drink too much Kool Aid, if the Leafs can add a serviceable centre or prospect and kick in a first round draft choice through trading Kaberle (My favorite Leaf over the last decade) than Burke has managed to add two major ingredients (Dion, Kessel) to build around, several good prospects and enough cap space to go after a centre through free agency if a trade is not in the works. If they can aquire a number 1/2 centre (Not to be confused with Stajan who is a 2/3 centre) than they have a chance to develop Kadri at the NHL level next year while providing some insurance.

It doesn't mean playoffs this year or next, but it does bring us some hope. Besides, we shed ourselves of Toskaloss, and Blake.

As it stands now, the Leafs will have close to 20 million dollars to work with in terms of cap space for next year.

There is a dawn approching. Hang in there Freddie!

If the media wants Wilson out they should start praising him continually. Otherwise, you know he's here to follow through on the plan. Younger and bigger.
3-5 yrs. It hasn't been poor coaching but sloppy defence and poor passing and shooting. All improved by better talent.

The Leafs should have never fired Paul Maurice. It's not Burke's fault that the team is in the state it is. It's the rich bastards that own the team. The fact that the Raptors are doing good confuses me.

This is a good thing for the team. I'm very excited about these changes. Now if we can sign Marleau in the off season we'll be good to go......as for the raps....they are okay because they play in the eastern conference which is very weak. yes they have beaten some strong western teams but they're overall record is nothing to brag about. They will not get out of the first round of the playoffs.

My point about the Raptors was the ownership doesn't seem to meddle with them as they do with the Leafs. Evert time a team makes G.M. and coach changes, at lot of the time it ends up being a step back. I am sure unless a miracle happens Wilson is gone after this year. Would the Leafs try Ted Nolan? What about Mike Keenan? Wilson this year seems out of step. Last year he was more with it. Lets hope these changes and some other put the Leafs on the right road.

Lets be honest fred..you promised the leafs as bad as they might be...would finish ahead of montreal...and that is just not going to happen..not even close...so lets embrace the changes as they cannot get worse in my opinion..bad coaching or not..and i agree with you..i feel he sucks ..wilson does...but it can only be a good change..cannot get worse.
I actually think a surly guy with talent like dion could help.

Tomas Kaberle is useless as a defenceman. If they want to keep him, move him up front and have him play with Kessel. He can still quarterback the powerplay and his softness on defense will not hurt. No one is afraid to go into a corner with Kaberle, not even children.

Kabby could be the Red Kelly of this generation.

Guaranteed shutout for Brodeur tonight.

Kaberle won't shoot the puck if his life depended on it. He makes more passes than a drunken sailor on saturday night. Put him up front with Kessel. It worked for Red Kelly.

No surprise if the Leafs jump out with a lead only to BLOW it in the 3rd...you'd think they were still at Church and Wellesley.

Am I the only one who almost dropped a tootsie roll in my pants after the game tonight?

The goaltending didn't suck, the defencemen held their position, the offence actually made the most of their opportunities. For a second I thought I saw a Maple Leaf team that looked like a playoff contender.

Sadly, it was only one game. Giggy may be the best we've had in the pipes since Belfour, but I don't think there is any reason to be too excited. Phanuef looked like a man possesed, probably still pissed at the Flames, however I won't be 100% sold on him after only one game.

At least there is nowhere to go but up!

One does not make a season of course but they did look like a different team alst night.

Dare I say truculent? Confident too.
