I spoke with a very excited Humble Howard yesterday. His will be the first voice heard on the new Boom 97.3, and he's pumped.
Howard fully appreciated EZ Rock and the opportunity it gave him, but it's no secret that he was somewhat misplaced on that station. The new Boom 97.3 will be more in-line with the type of radio he has done and likes to do.
Although it will not be CFNY re-visited, Boom 97.3 will flirt with it a bit, while playing other hits from the 60's, 70's and 80's. 97.3 will move from a soccer mom station, to a cool mom station. It will still have an eye to a female audience, but will be much more palatable to men.
It will not pretend it's an old time AM station on the FM band; instead it will feature timeless music and relevant talk.
It's interesting that a few weeks ago Maie Pauts was named as the new mid-day host, and I thought it odd that she wouldn't be starting until the New Year. Now it makes sense.
Hiring Maie, arguably the top female talent in Toronto, to do mid-days on this station gives you an idea of where it's going.
EZ Rock 97.3 will officially become Boom 97.3 on Boxing Day, and then Humble becomes the first jock to open a microphone on January 4th.
He will do mornings with the sweet and wonderful Colleen Rushholme, and to answer the flood of e-mails I've received over the past several hours, no, I will not be part of it.
I'll still be givin' er and lovin' it in Peterpatch.
Good luck Howard, and Maie and Colleen and KJ and good guy Andy Wilson and everyone else involved. It sounds like a fun project, but more importantly, it's made several people very happy.
