Theres a reason you don't torture and its to protect our soldiers. the minute we throw the dignity of people we capture out the window and torture them we put every one of our soldiers or civilians at risk abroad if they are captured because you can guarantee they will reciprocate.
Sure, its likely some of our people will be tortured themselves anyway. But its why we adopted the geneva conventions. And I know that the Geneva conventions don't apply if its not a 'country' we are at war with. But, let us not refer to a whistleblower as a 'skunk' because the next one may not come forward when it might be even more necessary that they do.
I'm a true patriot too. But, because we are at war is not reason enough to rob someones dignity. Capture and hold combatants responsible, or if they are killed in the theatre of war so be it, but never capture and torture. I gotta disagree with you hear Freddie

I agree with anon. While war may not be pretty and you can't go at it with sunflowers and a bag full of pot, evil begets evil. Standing aside while torture occurs sets the stage for the enemy to do the same and more. It also acts like a beacon in order to call others to their cause. I mean lets be honest these people are willing to kill themselves to take out someone else you think standing aside and letting torture occur will stop them from doing so???? As for the Tories being the beloved savior of our army, I was recently at a conference where general rick hillier was a guest speaker. He had nothing good to say about this current government. While he was too much of a stand up man to criticize it he had nothing at all good to say about Harper and his cronies and sometimes a facial expression is worth it's weight in gold vs. a spoken word. As for you giving your opinion on what the families of killed soldiers would say or think; I think you should keep your mouth shut. Knowing 2 families affected not a single person in any of their families condone torturing in any form.

Canada has not been accused of torture. We've been accused of handing over prisoners to Afghanis who torture.. with no proof I might add.
Of course the families wouldn't condone torture, nobody does, but we should certainly condemn the unfounded critisizm of our troops.

Maybe you should read and think before writing Tank, or shut-up yourself.

I can just see Al Qaeda leafing through the Geneva Convention making sure they haven't violated any of it's conventions.
WW2 and this dust bowl war are light years apart, century old conflicts, and traditions, make this a war you can't fight with a piece of paper like the Geneva Convention. It is unfortunately ruthless.

Gene obviously you have a comprehension problem. I stated standing aside while torture occurs. I didn't say we took part, but being complacent to the act does not make us look good at all; still an accessory to it. Why shouldn't there be accountability for troops??? I predict this story won't stick to Harper and his government. Some Taliban-huggers who read the Star might be outraged, but they vote Liberal (or NDP) anyway. Bottom-line is, your average Canadian doesn't give a rat's ass what happens to Taliban prisoners at the hands of their own country-men. Look how much support Omar Khadr gets across the land when the Star does their monthly "Bring Omar Home" campaign. All you hear are crickets chirping.
