You guys are exactly right, what about cops that continue to break the hands free law! Of course they're exempt because they're "better" than us. Cops will always hide behind the unwritten double standard.

Frankly, this law is a big waste of time and money because a careless driving law already exists. They just created this new one to put the Fear of Police in people without actually having to do any policing.

People yapping on a cell phone don't have their wits about them to drive in a city like Toronto that's full of idiot drivers as it is. It's not the one hand on the wheel, it's the distracted so-so driver that's scary. So talking hands free they'll still be fightening to have out there.

This law will be about as effective as a fart in a wind storm.People are hooked on this electronic drug and aren't about to give it up without a fight. You could ban the damn things out-right and it won't make a difference. It is unbelievable how many bad drivers are out there. If the police want to make roads safer for us, pick an intersection and spend a while there. Ticket every run red light, every turn without signaling. See what what they come up with. Sure you shouldn't use your cell while driving but people don't care. What's so fuckin' important that people need their phones welded to their heads? I manage to go through life without one.

How can you use the word controversy? There is no controversy about it, holding a phone at your head in an interactive communication has been proven to be just as dangerous as drunk driving.

Cell phone use while driving is responsible for many deaths and hundreds of millions of dollars to the insurance industry. It is mind boggling that the insurance industry didn’t lobby this ban 10 years ago. Great Britain has had the ban for a long time.

Freddie your comment of “can I eat an apple?” has absolutely nothing to do with the danger of cell phone use while driving. Every single car on the road has a cell phone in it, how many have food, maybe 1 or2% and the apple is not interactive, you bite, you chew no thinking required, at least for most of the population.

I am on the road a good part of the day and I have seen it all with cell phone user… on the highway, 30kph speed fluctuations and weaving in the lane, you swear the driver is drunk for sure and you get beside them and they are on the cell phone. Not going when the light changes, driving through red lights. I have personally witnessed no less than six rear-ender accidents where the person doing the hitting was on the cell phone, I was the victim in one of these accidents while stopped at a school bus with flashing lights on, a young girl on the cell phone drives into 3 cars behind me and the chain reaction caused the car behind to hit me, luckily I had little damage. Imagine if there was no line of cars when this girl came upon the school bus with lights flashing? Driving around Richmond Hill and Woodbridge, at least 90% of every young person you see is on their cell phone while driving, it’s a miracle they get anywhere. It’s at the point where every accident you see you can say ‘cell phone’ and know you’re right.

One death is too many when it could have been prevented. I am surprised there aren’t more law suits against the province, the cell phone manufactures and the service providers… people sue tobacco companies for cancer, they hold bars and homeowners responsible for people leaving their place drunk and then driving… why not blame the cell phone makers for all the accidents?

Nothing else distracts the driver as much as the interactivity of the phone call. The radio is not interactive, it requires no thinking, how many times have you driven for an hour and can’t remember one song you heard?

How will they police it you were asking? I believe the revenue from this could pay off the national debt. The same way they look for seat belt infractions on the on and off ramps to the highway is one way. All they have to do is stand near any 4 way stops in the GTA and let the revenue roll in… and at the 4 way stop it’s a double dipper, cell phone ticket and going through a stop sign because they weren’t looking. In front of every school in the GTA in the morning and afternoon, have you ever run that gauntlet? I would rather fall in the tiger cage at the zoo.

This law will save lives, bring in revenue and cut out several hundred million dollars in insurance claims… it seems to me that the only controversy is why did it take so long to enact?

I see both sides of it, however I see where Freddie is going, whats next? No eating or drinking while you are driving? Are they going to say you can't operate the radio in the car? That takes your eyes off the road...I use my Ipod...Am I not allowed to use that? That is my radio essentially,,,its not a phone so they technically cant ticket me for it.
Where do you draw the line at taking away what we can and can't do while driving.

Buffaloboymike, In Ontario eating and drinking while driving is prohibited. It just isn't enforced. No ipod, no switching the radio, no talking to your passenger, no GPS. Just the way it is now.

While we are still on the topic, whats up with every wanker with GPS. If you take your eyes of the road to look at it, aren't you not watching the road. I've seen cars with them mounted right in front of the driver. I swear it's like some video game. People seem to be infatuated with watching the little marker move. If you haven't got a clue to as where your going get a map or stay off the road.
