Number 4

October 2, 2009 @ 11:34

It was a great couple of hours in the studios of Corus Peterborough. The great Bobby Orr was in town to promote his association with Chevrolet and their Fair Play program and he stopped by the studios of the Wolf and Kruz.

We thought we'd have him for an hour, but we had him for two.

Bobby Orr is what every pro athlete active or retired should represent, class, compassion and humility.

Needless to say, all human beings should offer these qualities, but let's not kid ourselves, famous people are often held to a higher standard and much too often they fail the grade.

Having said that, as someone who covered a lot of pro sports over the years, it's amazing how Canadian professional hockey players are in a league of their own when it comes to being down to earth, decent nice guys.

Bobby Orr was simply fantastic today. He was great with our morning shows, he was great with the staff and he was wonderful with the people who showed up to catch a glimpse and an autograph.

He talked about the Fair Play program that he initiated and he also took the time to talk all aspects of his hockey and his career. He even showed me the scars on his knees.

Number four, Robert Gordon Orr.

I envy you Freddie, I hope one day I get meet Bobby.

The pride of Parry Sound is the best all-round hockey player in the world bar none.

p.s. Freddie, can you ask him since he's retired if he'd mind playing on our beer league team?

Appropriately of course.

Bobby has always been my all time favourite player, I can't think of a defenceman that has played harder than #4, and he has the scars to prove it as the song goes.

You truly are blessed Freddie P!!

With all due respect to Gretzky, I've always considered Orr the best hockey player I ever saw. However, these 30 year-old clips also highlight the fact that goalies in that era sucked. The present-day game is infinitely faster.

Bobby is a class act and in a league of his own.
He was always great when he took part in the MIX 99.9 golf tourneys and I got to work with him alot when I was with the Icedogs since he is Jason Spezza's agent

There is no one better than

# 4 BOBBY ORR

Steve, the old time goalies didn't bulk up with larger pads, blockers etc. etc. to enlarge their net coverage like the current crop of goalies.
Maybe my memory is jaded for the old timers, but I don't recall as much dump and chase in the 60's as I see now.

I meet him a few times through my brother-in-law. Great guy! Hey Fred? Why didn't you show him scoring on the Leafs? After all Bobby scored more on them than Montreal. Oh, I see, the Canadiens and the Bruins played more than the Leafs for the Stanley Cup, historically. ;O]

You are a lucky man to meet the greatest hockey of all time. He is also hockey's greatest ambassador, keeping his love of the game where it belongs, with the kids. What a great guy.
I'm still laughing at Glenn's remark - the funniest line in a long time - thanks Glenn

None classier than #4.

Old time hockey at it's finest!
We still love Bobby Orr. Sad to think he had to end his career at only 30.
