Layton wants to come off as the only one that tried to prevent the election... the moderate voice. There is no way Harper is going to cater to this socialist, so Layton's only way to salvage anything from the situation is to be able to say "well I was willing to work with the government if they comprimised". Notice that it is Harper who has to comprimise, not Layton.

Layton has a lot to live down. The last election is still a fresh memory. He made a deal with traitors, then behaved like a rabid dog when the GG gave Harper his prorogue. So when the inevitable election comes this Friday and the NDP are the first to knock at my door I'll be asking serious questions about his power mania and lack of patriotism.

I remember the last time an election was called - he was front and centre with comments like "The PM doesn't want to do his job. Well, I want his job" or something like that.
He sounded like a whiney little bastard, and well...he looks creepy to boot.
