Spineless Leafs

August 13, 2009 @ 08:55

I think it's wonderful that Jim Balsillie has now set his sights on Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, because you can bet your ass they are the driving force behind keeping Balsillie out of the NHL.

Balsillie has requested a deposition from MLSE President Richard Peddie through the court proceedings in Phoenix. Under oath, he wants Peddie to answer some questions about territorial rights and motives.

Of course Peddie remains deathly quiet and the NHL rejects the request by claiming the Leafs and Peddie have had very little to do with any of this.

Bullshit.

As much of a skunk that Gary Bettman has become, you know the Leafs are the background cheering him on to prevent a team from coming to Hamilton.

And make no mistake about it. This has very little to do with money, and just about everything to do with image from a Leaf standpoint.

A team in Hamilton will not affect the Leafs in any way monetarily. The ACC will still be full and the Leafs will still be the focus Hockey Night in Canada and they'll still sell just as many souvenirs. They will continue to be the area's heritage team and a lavish cash cow.

What the Leafs are most concerned with is this - they don't want a team in Hamilton
because they don't want the team in Hamilton to become better than they are. I'm convinced this is the over-riding factor. Forty two years of incompetence will do that to you.

The last thing the Leafs want is a team 30 miles down the road with a better players and better record than they have. The last thing they need is a team 30 miles down the road making the playoffs while they don't.

In a nutshell, the Leafs don't want a team in Hamilton because Leaf management has no balls.

They don't look at Jim Balsillie as a challenge; they look at him as a threat. They realize Basillie has a history of hiring good people and creating a successful business, and that scares the livin' shit out of them.

The last thing they want is for Jim Balsillie to come into the market and do within a couple of years, what they've failed to do in forty-plus years. It's all about ego.

The Leafs have nothing to worry about from a financial stand-point, five million people in the GTA guarantee enough fans for both teams and to think a team in Hamilton would cause a reduction in Leaf ticket prices is a farfetched fantasy.

The Leafs don't want a team in Hamilton for one reason and one reason only. They don't want a Hamilton team to win more than they do.

Any thought on how this would impact the Sabres? I would think they would lose more with a team in the Hammer. Niagara people traveling there instead of over the border

I have to disagree with you Freddie P. The Leafs are no longer the money printing machine of yester-year. They are not sold out any more, I have been offered seats and suites at the ACC by MLSE, I have toured the many empty suites, unfortunately, I can not afford this right now, which is exactly what has been happening at MLSE these past 18 months.

They are more than scared of The Silly, they are not selling out now without another team in their back yard.

As for The Silly: Man, seriously, the NHL doesn't want you, take your big bags of money and play in someone else's playground. Buy a KHL team, hell, buy the KHL.

I have a feeling settling with the OSC for tens of millions of dollars due to stock option allegations would make any potential business partner leery of wanting to do business with you.

Keep it 6! Until someone else comes along...

With the demographics of Toronto changing so much, and the Leafs being such a badly run organization - I'm sure that you're right in a sense. The Leafs aren't quite the money making machine they once were.

But 100% they would still sell out and make TONS of money if there was a team in Hamilton. Even if there was another team in the GTA! People forget what a big and wealthy city this is. 4th largest sports market in North America.

The Leafs would have great attendance if they only drew from Woodbridge alone.

James
August 13, 2009 / 16:47

But back to what you said, Freddie, I agree with you.

I wonder how much of Bettman's drive to keep Balsillie and Hamilton out of the NHL is due to pressure from MLSE? Perhaps more than we think?

Stupid Leafs management. That's what happens when you get idiots who wear suits running the game.

You have scraped away the whole financial issue and cut to the chase - bravo.

You know, this is one of the reasons I like (and I know you hate - for other reasons) soccer. Relegation/promotion.

In Soccer you know where the leafs would be, after 40 years of getting by, collecting profits and not worrying about winning? They would be in the OHL.

For those not familiar with the concept - I will imagine relegation in the NHL (this will never ever happen). Worst two teams in the NHL - your reward? Best two draft picks? uh uh. You move down a league and let two new teams come up and be in the NHL. Two teams that succeeded at the lower level.

They might not survive - BUT. If you weren't serious about being competetive - REALLY competetive in the NHL - you were gone. The league is for the best.

And THIS - sorry Fred - is why the best players and best teams are in the best leagues in soccer (in Europe anyways).

And why we get the Nashville Atlanta scores ...

All the best Fred. I live way out in the maritimes, but I think Hamilton deserves a team. And Toronto, as it stands, does not.

Alan G
August 13, 2009 / 22:11

Fred, your post hit the nail on the head. Why hasn't anyone in Toronto figured that out!! Hey McCowan, wake up!!

And John, love the idea about relegation/promotion. That way we wouldn't have team sucking just to get a better place in the draft.

Peter
August 13, 2009 / 22:52

Could be the Leafs quietly against competition for fans?
Bettman has to follow his boss's wills...and he has 28 or so.
Bassy can outbid the lot. So where does he go---Reinsdorf. Does a Chicago dude want a losing hockey team in the desert? Maybe? But I doubt that he would lose money on it. I'm sure there an owner's deal to support his loses. Proof...none but connect the dots. Bettman, Reinsdorf, Tannenbaum and how many other rich people involved.

"The Leafs don't want a team in Hamilton for one reason and one reason only. They don't want a Hamilton team to win more than they do."

That wouldn't be hard! ;O)

If this BS continues and Hamilton gets screwed for a team yet again I will turn my back on the NHL. (did it with the WHA) I can get my hockey fix at the JR level with sometimes better hockey!

Nigel Trousershrapnel
August 14, 2009 / 10:35

From the Hamilton Spectator:
"The NHL board of governors rejected [Jim Balsillie]'s bid to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes on July 29 saying that he was unfit to own a league franchise based, in large part, on a lack "of character and integrity." But the men listed below have all owned NHL teams, most of their ownership bids being approved in the [Gary Bettman] era under the same rules and scrutiny that purportedly apply to Balsillie's."

Bruce McNall:(Kings) convicted of bank fraud and sentenced to 70 months.

William “Boots” Del Biaggio III:(Predators) Awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to securities fraud, which accused him of falsifying documents to obtain $100 million in fraudulent loans.

John Rigas:(Sabres) He was convicted for multiple accounts of fraud and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Sanjay Kumar:(Islanders) Sentenced to 12 years and fined 8 million dollars for his part in 2.2 billion dollar fraud at Computer Associates

Henry Samueli:(Ducks) Awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to making a false statement regarding his involvement in manipulating stock options while with Broadcom.

So who in their right mind would think there is collusion and/or a conspiracy to keep a bad apple like Balsillie out of this League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?
Perhaps if Jimmy-boy went out and punched a nun or stole from a children's charity he could prove his metal and claim his rightful place at the table with these stellar beacons of character and integrity.

Pauly Walnuts
August 14, 2009 / 11:49

Balsille will succeed. Sooner or later. I have faith.

That worm Bettman will get his just reward one day, and when he does, I will laugh and dance while flipping the bird at his likeness. This dream has replaced my long standing dream of the Leafs winning the Cup... (sigh)

Trish
August 14, 2009 / 12:41

I'm still bowled over by the board of governor's claims that Balsillie has neither the character nor the integrity to be an NHL owner. Oh yea... spoken like true moronic illiterates. To them "Integrity" is when you damn near kill a rival on the ice, then put on your best suit and bawl to the media that you don't really play the game "that way". "Character" is what you build for a few months in white collar prison after stealing player pensions.

I completely agree, Fred. The Leafs are up to something. Sometimes the silences can be loud.

JAMES
August 14, 2009 / 14:15

The NHL doesn't what a team in Hamilton, not because of the Leafs or Sabre's, but because they want a team in Las Vegas. They want to beat the NBA there first. Who ever else buys the team will through in the towel in Phoenix and roll into Vegas sooner or later.Bettman wins. Vegas would become another false hockey market. It's easy to trash the Leafs because of their track record. They may or may not want a team in Hamilton, but that's not the issue. The league and the little runt that runs it are the enemy here. Remember Buffalo has more to loose here than Toronto.

Horonymous
August 14, 2009 / 23:11

There are plenty of fans who will fill seats and support a new team in the Hammer.

August 15, 2009 / 20:48

I'm with Walnuts, living in Oakville, I have become distant from supporting the Leafs and would be in line for seasons tickets for the Hammertown team. I have also become a Ticats fan over the past 7 or 8 years because I love Ivor Wynn stadiums old time feel. Skydome (can't bring myself to call it the Rogers Centre) is just not a football venue.

Creating a Mosque at Ground Zero has got to be the ignoramus notion during the history of humankind, I really believe that it's maliciously specifically designed, at best, to insight controversy. This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
