Good Guy

June 2, 2009 @ 15:58

It was five years ago today that we got the call. My wife came into the back yard in tears with the horrible news that our friend Jeff had died.

It didn't register for a moment. When Delyse first said Jeff Laird my mind immediately jumped to his father Doug. Doug Laird died.

That was much more conceivable, after all he was in his 70s. Healthy people often die in their 70's, I could get my mind around this.

But then she said it again. Jeff had died. Jeff Laird my good trailer buddy. He was only 41 years old.

Jeff is probably the most generous person I've ever known. This guy would do anything for you anytime anywhere.

He also had connections - and those connections worked the benefit of everyone. If you needed something, Jeff could get it and if there was any way he could swing it, you could keep your wallet in your pocket. He was that kind of person. He got great pleasure from doing for others.

I sit here this morning blown away by how quickly five years has passed - and how time can let memories slip away.

For the first few months after Jeff died, I'd think about him often and get mad at what happened. 41 year old guys shouldn't die of heart attacks - if there's a god, how could he do this to someone who was so kind and generous, someone with a wife and young son.

But as time passes you think about it less - and eventually you hardly think about it all and that's simply not fair to someone like Jeff Laird. He was much too special to be forgotten.

And that's why I write about him today. Jeff wasn't a celebrity, in fact he didn't like attention at all, but I didn't want today to pass without acknowledging this guy in some way.

It's only my goofy little website - and most of the readers of this site never got the pleasure of meeting Jeff Laird - but at least the site allows me to put Jeff's name out there.

It allows me to make sure that on this fifth anniversary of his death, he is remembered.

He will not be forgotten.

Hi Freddie
I'm a childhood friend of Jeff Laird from Brampton Ontario. A conversation with a buddy got me nostalgic and I searched my old high school, JA Turner and I saw that Jeff had passed away. I feel completely stranded, I lost contact with Jeff when I moved out West in 1986, and am trying to find a family member to contact. I was best friends with his brother Mike. I heard that a few years ago his mother Sally had passed away, and I thought Doug had moved to Florida? If you have any contact with the family, PLEASE pass along my home email address, as I would love to talk to them.
I have to go, I'm at work and am starting to break down.
Cheers

Hi Fred,

Just wanted to thank you for getting Pam to contact Lewis we have not seen each other for 20 years and last weekend we final meet each others families it was great to see Lewis again, it bought back the days when Jeff, Lewis and l would hang out at love sick lake. l remember one May 24 weekend it was raining and not much to do so we got out the fishing polls and rolled over the rock across from the beach. We started casting not getting any bits then l felt something strong on the end of my poll l had on a green poncho for the rain and funky artist hat on (my artist days) well l started to yet Jeff and Lewis about how l got the big one then as l said that this huge branch came to the top and then to top that off because l was pulling so hard l slipped down the rocks into the very cold water all you could see was my poncho wide open and my hat floating in water when l got to the surface all l heard was Jeff and Lewis laughing as loud as they could! It was not funny then but when l look back now l wish l had a lot more of those times with my kid brother l still miss his so much!

Thanks again

In an effort to combat undesirable spamming regarding my web log, I could use a tiny disclaimer together with the comment box. I might probably let the journal readers be sure that I encourage these people to showcase their pages as long as they bring some decent information in connection with the piece. I will not mind doing work a little bit so as to get a hold of a nice link.

You actually raise the right points, on the other hand I believe your actual analysis is without a doubt off base, positive blog though, congratulations are in order. Sara

This blog post hits the spot. I've been craving for some excellent information and finally discovered it right here. I've been browsing around the entire morning to find a good post to tell me what I need to know, but I have determined like 34 other blogs that just gave me senseless information!

Who the hell supposed erecting a mosque at ground zero was indeed advisable? I'm not a great fan of both Glen Beck or Sarah Palin nonetheless when compared to Obama and the supremely stupid administration, both of these are geniuses, come on The united states, there is certainly plenty of unusual stuff going on.
