Too Freakin' Much

May 19, 2009 @ 20:14

The headline in the Star says this... Canadian Tamils urge Harper to speak out.

And the byline says this. 'When Hamilton was going to get a hockey team, he made a statement' so why not now?

Can I answer that?

Because he doesn't have to and maybe he doesn't want to. Please, will somebody pinch me and tell me this is nothing more than a bizarro dream.

The Canadian Tamil Congress holds a news conference in Toronto and insists that our Prime Minister responds to their demands? It's too much to comprehend.

And then they use the Hamilton hockey angle? Are you kidding me?

Here's the deal Mr. and Mrs. Tamil, he's the Prime Minister of Canada and to the vast majority of Canadians, whether Hamilton gets a hockey team or not means a lot more than what's going on in Sri Lanka.

Pretty shitty eh?

But receive it, eat it and then choke on it. The average Canadian who has no ties to Sri Lanka loves hockey and has little or no time to analyze, consider or even ponder what's going on in a screwed up country half a world away.

Pretty heartless eh?

The average Canadian worked his butt off at work today and can't wait to get home and watch the Jays or the Stanley Cup playoffs and probably has more than a passing interest in whether another NHL team is coming to Canada.

The Prime Minister was probably addressing these people when he "offended" you by making a statement on the Hamilton hockey situation. But you see, the hockey situation is a lot more clear cut than your concerns.

Hamilton wants hockey and most Canadians want Hamilton to have hockey. You might find this simple and frustrating, but thanks to Canada being the greatest country on earth, its the type of thing that pre-occupies us.

Pretty weird eh?

Most Canadians when pressed might have a degree of sympathy for what's going on in your "homeland", but that's balanced by the assumption that when you came here, Canada became your homeland.

Pretty naive eh?

The Prime Minister spoke about the Hamilton hockey situation because he must have bloody well felt like it and it's a subject with nationalistic over-tones.

Please don't compare it to what is going on in a country that's been fucked up for 25 years and despite what happened over the weekend still appears to be fucked up.

Applaud the Prime Minister for being measured in his response to a conflict that involves a terrorist organization that has a long and disturbing history of committing all the human rights violations that its is now crying about.

It's not enough that you demand money and medicine and millions of dollars in aid and insist on making Sri Lanka's problem a Canadian problem, now you've drawn hockey into the issue.

You've stepped over the line and as hard as it may be for you to swallow, most Canadians simply don't have the time or energy to care about your "homeland", your crisis or your opinion of our / your Prime Minister.

Stephen Harper's got a country to run. A country that works.

Pretty foreign eh?

Bang on Freddie.

One observation I've made and you kind of touched on but didn't say flat out. When you come to this country, you want to make Canada work. Work for you, your family, and to do so you work to contribute to this country that offers so much to you.

When the Irish came here they didn't demand our Politicians to send food, aid and money to Ireland so that they could make their way back. The became Canadian. The Italians didn't block highways and intersection demanding that the Prime Minister send money, jobs, and aid to Italy so that they could solve Italy's problems, and so that they could go back. They worked it out within their community if it interested them. In the meantime they busted their asses in construction, and other skilled work because that' what they could contribute with their initial lack of english.

The Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Russians, Croats, Serbs, Slovenians, Romanians, etc. didn't come to this country and demand that Canada, the US and the rest of the western world invate the communist eastern block in order to right the injustices caused by that... they came here to leave that behind, do what was best for them and their families. They solved the problems of their respetive ethnic homelands in their spare time, with fund raisers, awareness, etc. to help form popular opinion.

Now that all being said. The Tamils seem to be cut from an entirely different cloth. They create civil unrest, they interfere with Joe Canadians everyday life, not for the better but for the worse... if they're trying to get popular opinion on their side, their doing a shitty job. And to demand that Stephen Harper do something? Who in the f*ck do you think you are to demand anything? If you want Sri Lanka to be fixed, do it on your own time, on your own dime, with your own blood sweat and tears. If you want me to contribute, be an example of your commitment through hard work and dedication, not a major pain in our collective ass.

I think it speaks volumes when Canadians are distracted by hockey and those in Sri Lanka are embroiled in war. That's what makes Canada the best country in the world. Even when mired in a world-wide depression, hockey reigns in the fore front of the Canadian psyche. And the war a half a world away isn't that important because it really just isn't that important.

This really is the UN's fault, and since we're a member of the UN we take as much blame as the other members.

The UN consistently ignores genocide (Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Iraq) until it's too late, so people have to take drastic measure to get their point across.

I used to think your xenophobia was cute Fred, but you're taking it a little far...

The UN has a lot of problems; no argument. But the UN isn't allowed to enter into the domestic business of a soverign nation unless 6 conditions are met. None of them apply to Sri Lanka.

'When Hamilton was going to get a hockey team, he made a statement' so why not now?

Because it's IN OUR COUNTRY and can be addressed more succinctly and reasonably than a war half-way around the world, dumbfuck.

--------------------------

As members of the UN, we will respond when we are asked BY THE UN.
IF the UN is dragging their feet to address the situation in Sri Lanka, tough shit.
We have problems of our own here. They may not be mass genocide, but we've got plenty of fixing to do right here to continue the quality of life we work hard to have.

PLEASE, Sri Lankan supporters.... Keep your passion. Use your passion to fuel outrage and anger. Now, take all that pent-up anger, agression, and energy and go THERE and fight for your people.

I'm gonna stay here and fight for Canada.

Sorry Fred, but you are dead wrong. Most of Canada does not care much about a team in Hamilton. Another team in Canada yes - most Westerners would prefer Winnipeg - Quebec would probably prefer Quebec City and further east of that would like to see a city like Halifax get a crack at it. Only Ontario would care about Hamilton....
What about those pitiful anti-Iggy ads, Harper has a campaign to run, not a country...

I feel for the folks who have family back in Sri Lanka. Because the PM isn't talking about it everyday doesn't mean Canada doesn't care.

Harsh...I like to think that as a Canadian I can do both...care about Canada (first and foremost) but also care about the world in general. The world is just too small to live in isolation...

Iggy-ads---amusing and pathetic. Like Mr Chretien and his golf balls. Mr Mulroney and his envelopes.
What did Silvio Dante tell Pauly Walnuts on the Sopranos?....I'll leave that to freddie's Pauly W.
America gets Reagan, Clinton, and Obama...maybe our climb to the top excludes quality?

Pauly Walnuts, you should be the Mayor of Toronto, well done. You could probably solve the crisis in Caladonia in your spare time too. Send your comments to the Star and Globe, everyone could benefit from what you said.

Replica Leather Handbags are commonly referred to as something that will take things to go wherever you are. Bags not really much connection with their bags, except that they take too useful for things that are necessary. But things have changed now, and yes, it was a pretty significant change.

Replica Fashion Handbags

At one point our Replica Fashion Handbags are the luxury brands were small family businesses catering exclusively for the royalty and the rich. Today, most brands are the property of one of three groups. Conglomerates are focused on the benefits that the owners made the richest men have France.
