Ulterior Motive

May 15, 2009 @ 22:29

"All we want is for Canadians to help us," said Gowrishangar Kamalanphan, the apparent leader of the demonstration, which was conducted by a group of high school and university students.

This just about says it all. Another pack of Tamil teens, who were probably born in Canada, pissed off even more people on Friday night by blocking Yonge Street near Dundas.

More and more I get the feeling this is less about what's going on in Sri Lanka and more about what's going on in Canada.

High school and university students? Are these punks really interested in ending the alleged genocide in Sri Lanka, or are they more interested in baiting police to get some kind of perverted attention.

Are they really concerned about what's going on in their "parents" homeland, or are they trying to make some kind of a statement about Canadian society by almost begging police to get physical with them.

I mean really. If I lie down in the middle of a street and refuse the order of a police officer to move, what am I really doing? Am I protesting something half a world away, or am I hoping a cop will smack me upside the head so I can scream something?

Am I acting on behalf of my countrymen who aren't really my countrymen, or am I frustrated at being a visible minority in Canada who doesn't feel he's getting a fair shake?

Am I using my body to protest what's going on in Sri Lanka, or am I using my colour to gain something in Canada?

Am I demanding that the bloodshed in Sri Lanka ends, or am I hoping that some is spent on the streets of Toronto so I can accuse somebody, anybody of something that makes the establishment look bad?

I'm sorry Tamil teeny-boppers but you've lost me. Actually, you never had me, but now I find you even more ridiculous.

This is no longer a protest, it's become "something to do on a Friday night."

Get off the fuckin' road and count your blessings that you wake up every morning in the greatest country in the world.

We have entirely too many of these visible minorities in this country. 20 years ago , did we have these kinds of problems in Canada? No we did not...reason? because there were less from the middle east in this country - less minorities, less problems...
and no I'm not racist, I just call it as I see it. You know the saying: If it walks like a duck....

Freddie, you have nailed this one. The Tamil-turd terrorists are punks and dickheads. They should be flushed like the raw effluent they are and forgotten. They represent no cause and if they did running around terrorizing innocent communities that can do little to further it (read you and I) serve to demonstrate that they have no regard for those very communities that permit their existence in Canada.

Go away you Tamil-turd terrorists. Go defend your homeland. Perhaps the government will fund your one-way ticket to SriLanka. I would support that. Now get lost turds.

I am not a racist, but I think I will be one if these protests continue.

These guys are looking for a fight. I looked one right in the eyes and they are ready to go as soon as someone pushes one of them.

This is terrorism. Period.

There's no doubt they need help. But what can Canada do, and what's it got to do with Yonge and Dundas?
Two seperate issues.

As with any protest, the purpose is to get the attention and then some sort of resolve. Too bad SOME people get their ass in the air because of inconvenience! I guess all you whiners in T.O. would like to have the Niagara Regional Police in charge of running things but, thats another story.......Fred?

Freddie P.
May 16, 2009 / 11:15

I don't know what you mean about the Niagara Regionals Mike, then again a lot of what you write is confusing..

What do you mean?

And really Mike, I'm getting tired of this "get attention" argument... they've got our attention, now what exactly are we supposed to do?

Lay it out for us Mr. Lowville, but spare us the Harper government angle.. he's already thrown money at it... now what?

Answers?

IanS
May 16, 2009 / 11:52

Mike from Lowville (once again), There's a difference between getting our attention and being self-indulgant, hooligans. Civil disobedience is fine if you're practicing that IN the country you're trying to change. But it doesn't do anything half a world away expect to turn against you the very people you're trying to bring on side.

Mike from Lowville
May 16, 2009 / 12:14

Here's one for IanS and Fred.
http://www.chtv.com/ch/chchnews/index.html

Fred, what's going on there is no different than any in any country where innocents are being slaughtered. All that needs to be done, for the protesters, is to insure that Canada will do everything in it's power to try a put a stop to the killing of innocents. Joining with other civilized countries around to world to put pressure on the Sri Lankan government, through diplomacy. If it takes UN sections to help, so be it. Look, I for one do not have all the answers but, if this was happening in the Middle East, I'm sure it would garner quicker attention than most. Know what I mean?

Mike from Lowville
May 16, 2009 / 12:17

In a hurry, to go see Mom.

Should be "UN sanctions"! :O]

IanS
May 16, 2009 / 13:28

Mike, your mom is letting you upstairs? This is a special day.

As far as your last post, sure, if that's what was happening, great. What's going on in Toronto far exceeds "joining other civilized countries" to put pressure on Sri Lanka. Bringing the story to the attention of the public is no longer the intent of these protestors. And, at a point long passed, maybe no one is any longer interested in your story. That's an opinion that has to be respected, and the protestors need to do that.

May 16, 2009 / 14:08

We went into Kosovo with NATO to stop the genocide by the Serbs why not do the same for Sri Lank?

If a confrontation ever happens with the police will the protesters cry racism. The police have been pretty patient and restrained.

May 16, 2009 / 14:39

Mike's whole theory is that the Tamils are peaceful people fighting "the good fight".
Read up on this group. I don't want a bunch of cillians beign killed in Sri Lanka but the Tamils aren't the noble heroes that make themselves out to be. The media block in Sri Lanka is benefiting their methods too.

Again..their flag has two guns on it. This is the symbol they chose to have. Guns. Very peaceful.

Mike, you may want to find out the Toronto East Indian community's take on this. As you know, the Tamil Tigers assassinated the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991.

Beyond the students getting a cheap thrill for causing a disturbance[some are draft dodgers], the elite Lankans who only care about the state of Tamil and not the poor people who can't afford to escape and the rebels and sneak attack terrorists in the crowds, there are people in Sri Lankan sufferring like we can't imagine. If we could do something we would. I suspect if a boat left today with 1000 Canadian commandos ready to help,
99% would be non Tamil.
Remember, Canada is helping to defend the Afghan sandbox and how many devoted Canadians of convenience from Afgahnland are here.

Look its simple, let them lie down, have the cops watch as witnesses, but dont' stop traffic.

Let traffic negotiate the morons lying in the intersection. If one becomes a speed bump, oh well, who's fault was it?

Since when does lying down in traffic become a good idea? Just like earlier when they marched up onto the gardiner... let traffic go...
