My black lab had an encounter with a skunk a few years back. Got sprayed right in the face. This was late at night, and of course we didn't have any tomato juice handy. Then my wife says she just saw something on TV a couple of days earlier about this, and she goes and gets a tube of basic, white toothpaste from the bathroom. Nothing to lose, so I spread the toothpaste on his noggin and worked it in. Damned if it didn't work like a charm. Apparently the active ingredients in white toothpaste (not gel) neutralizes the skunk odour. I put the hound in the garage for the night, bathed him the next morning, and you'd never know he'd come out on the short end with a skunk. Thank you, Colgate.

I bet the ride home was just wonderful.
Our dog got nailed late last summer and we tried, diluted vinegar solution,
Tomato juice,
Carbolic soap, (safe to use on skin and clothes)
Toothpaste, and
Commercial products (shampoo for animals)all of these and that dog still had that stank. Read somewhere only time will help to dissipate the odor. Every time the dog got damp, you could smell it, in fact just this weekend I though..sniff, I though I could.......naw.

Reminds me of the time your producer at the CFNY morning show, Kevin got tagged by a skunk on the way home from work. I think he just used the incident as an excuse to lick his balls.

I loved your story, Fred - it brought back memories of our wonderful blue point Siamese. Years ago he arrived home at one in the morning, stinking and meowing angrily after a fight with a skunk. He fought like a tiger as we bathed him in tomato juice, then shut him away in his own room for the night. He was his old sweet-smelling self in the morning...

My dog got sprayed about 2 years ago, and you can still catch a hint of it when he gets wet.
Freddie, you can now make a huge bonfire with the flooring... sorry.

My cat got it a long time ago. Read about a formula with soap, bleach etc. Anyway we bleached the cat...he was ok but somewhat lighter and of course still smelled like polecat around his head as we wanted to avoid his eyes.

2 cups hydrogen peroxide
1/2 cup baking soda
squirt of dish detergent
Works better than anything else I have ever tried but the baking soda is a bitch to get out of their fur.

I am the king of skunk smell. February 2008, my 150 year old farm house had a female skunk go off under my foundation. Everything in the house smelled, even the stuff that was at the other end of the house. Lastwordlinda has the recipe for the most effective cleaner for clothes, skin and fur. Trust me I know. Tomato juice does nothing.
As for your hard wood, wait a few days spray it with an industrial cleaner, or vinegar and water - no too diluted and you will be fine. If the smell got into anything porous - material, clothing, etc. - wait, wait a long time, since there is no cleaner or process which will remove the smell. You can reduce it, you can cover it, but you can eliminate it. We had to wait 8 months until we could move back into our house.

I remodel my bathroom.
