This War's For You

April 2, 2009 @ 08:38

The extreme right wing whack jobs in the United States are pissin' their pants over this, but I totally agree with the Obama administration's decision to stop using the phrase "war on terror."

Even when I was one of the many million who had been sucked in to supporting George W's charge into Iraq, the phrase "war on terror" never sat well with me.

What did it mean? I could never really figure that out.

It was a war on Saddam Hussein, I know that. In retrospect it was a war spawned out of revenge for a guy's dad, I know that.

I have vivid images of old man Bush after losing the election to Bill Clinton in 1992 rehashing what went wrong and continuously telling his goober son George about the huge mistake of not finishing the job in Iraq during the Gulf War.

George Jr, being the goober that his is, got all hyped up and excited and dreamt of the day he could make things good for his daddy.

Don't laugh, I really think that's all it really amounts to... and who knows what the real story is behind 911 and the opportunity it gave W. to put his plan into action.

"War on terror" was nothing more than a sell line or a tag line. The same kind they use to sell beer, cars and running shoes.

It was meant scare the living shit out of the average American and justify a flimsy excuse to invade a country that ultimately had very little to do with 911 or terrorism in general.

"War on terror" was a smoke screen that fed every vengeful yahoo from Kentucky to North Dakota and the Bush boys knew it would. As military strategy came out of the war rooms, propaganda came out of the White House that would make every American think their was a "boogey man" around every corner.

And it worked, for a while.

But then as the truth came out and it became apparent that thousands of young Americans were dying for no reason the term "war on terror" lost its luster.

The war wasn't on terror, it was war on a country and it was making a lot ruthless bastards in the United States extremely rich off weaponry contracts.

If there was an actual "war on terror" taking place, it was happening in Afghanistan where Canada was sacrificing its own soldiers.

But you never hear the Canadian government use the term "war on terror" you never hear our soldiers use the term either. It's the Afghan war, just like it was never anything more than the Iraqi War.

The difference being, the Afghan war was justified.

Freddie: You're so wrong its actually quite funny. You call yourself a conservative but you're far from it.

Strange how Iraq is so much better off than Afghanistan. In the latter's case (that's Afghanistan for those Canadian goobers out there), NATO is fighting in a country that insists on continuing its theocratic state (with or without the taliban). Iraq is a democracy - sure there's the odd suicide bombings but you're always going to have that wherever muslims live.

Thankfully most of the insurgents are dead (conveniently, they blew themselves up) and things are at a point where there's a steady decline of US forces - a job well done!

"War on terror"? That's Ok with me.

Argie
April 2, 2009 / 14:01

It seems that things in Afghanistan have really declined since Canada took a greater role there. Thankfully the Americans are back in full force after cleaning up Iraq to get things done. Just like in World War 2, the yanks will save the day. Thank God for the USA!

If I agree with Argie does that mean that the terrorists have won?

IanS
April 2, 2009 / 14:22

Argie, Do you even have a clue about the war in Afghanistan? The last group of Canadian soldiers that were killed were fighting in an area that they (Canadians) were fighting in last year, and declared clear. It's Viet Nam all over again. From the base they go out and fight, try to win the hearts and minds, and then return to base. They aren't fighting for, and holding, the ground. It's being waged poorly and we're not any farther ahead now than when we started. The army is trying to support the civil improvements (which will go a longer way to winning the hearts and minds), but as far as fighting a war, they are losing.

Jake

Terrorists can win anytime as it takes no brains or talent. Blow someone up plus themselves. They can't win big but they can win their small wars.

Ever wonder how much money 'friends' of the Bush's have made from the so called wars?

Argie
April 2, 2009 / 14:41

Ian: For the record I do know what's going on there. Many military experts describe it as a 'mess'. There's even talk among Harper's people that we should sit down with the Taliban and deal with them - hopefully that doesn't happen.

Like you said it is similar to Vietnam the allied forces are fighting animals and like most Canadians I hate reading about any losses/deaths we incur from the enemy. Hopefully the US forces do ramp it up and conduct a more aggressive tactic in dealing with these people.

IanS
April 2, 2009 / 14:53

Argie, "Ramping it up" would require many, many further divisions of troops and air force personnel from the NATO countries. But it all depends on what the purpose of being there is; to effect a regime change or to find Bin Laden? The former is not possible (the British and the Soviets couldn't do it), and the latter would only take a couple of SEAL teams (or SAS or Mossad).

Pauly Walnuts
April 2, 2009 / 14:59

Argie, One important fact that you and the American's you wave the flag for don't realize. You can't impose democracy, it has to develop from within. That's why Iraq and Afghanistan will only be democratic once the people that live there want it, and once they can accept when elections do not go the way they wanted.

"War on Terror" was a joke, it only worked on the mindless sheep that it was intended to convince. It's right up ther with "Freedom Fries". I wish more American's would realize that many times things are wrapped in an American Flag and fed to them as patriotic... when in fact it's an insult to the nation and what it stands for.

Argie
April 2, 2009 / 15:21

Pauly: You're missing my point. Regarding democracy I agree it has to develop from within. That is why Iraq is now a democracy but Afghanistan never will be one. Just look at today's news that Karzai want to allow full on sharia law in regards to how husbands 'own' their wives.

Under saddam, it was a dictatorship but at least it wasn't a theocracy which is what we're faced with in Afghanistan. Knowing that, now, the main objective of NATO is simply kill as many talibans as possible and ensure al Queda is never able to re-group in that country (to prevent another 9/11). Sure enough, they'll find another muslim dominated country (likely in Africa).

Doesn't matter what our boy Obama or Freddie call it, its a continuing war against islamofacists (i.e. terrorist).

Pauly Walnuts
April 2, 2009 / 15:29

Freddie's Point was that the reason for going in to Iraq was not because of Terrorism, even togh they branded it with "War on Terror".

Saddam was a puppet dictator propped up and armed by the American Government... You can't pretend he was organising terrorist within Iraqi borders becuase even that mongrel Chainey admitted it after the fact that it was not true.

IanS
April 2, 2009 / 15:29

Argie, Please refer back to my last point. Your wishes for the military effort in Afghanistan are unwinnable. There is no political will to deploy the numbers needed to succeed in what you describe. Nor is there the military will to simply kill all the Taliban.

It is now less of a war on terror than it was an effort to distract the American public's attention from W's economic quagmire.

To the troop's credit they are skillfully conducting their business (not the generals, but rather the soldiers), but they are nothing more than pawns of an out of control foreign policy that has gained a life of its own.

Argie
April 2, 2009 / 15:40

Pauly and Ian: Its easier just to address you both as you seem to be the same person anyway.

My point, once again, is that Afghanistan may not be winnable. Its making Iraq look like a cakewalk now. I hope I'm wrong but its going to take an escalation among the US forces - hey, I could call it a 'surge'. Where I have heard that before?? I worked in Iraq and hopefully it works in Aghan'n.

As for the war on terror in regards to Iraq, regardless as to why they went into that country, things are a hell of alot better off now then they were when SH was running things. As for blaming W for the global economic woes, that's just insane. A few banks around the world collapse and its W's fault? Buddy, please....

With all due respect Fred, I usually agree with you, but I'm not sure your point has any validity. Fact is "War on ___________" is a phrase used often in our vernacular, ie. "war on drugs", "war on poverty". What would you have preferred, something softer like "Just say no to terrorists?"

IanS
April 2, 2009 / 16:23

The economic mess is due to a number of reasons, not least of which is the continued military actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. When the government spends that kind of coin on munitions and the like, there's no money for infastructure and programs in the US. Plus add on all the initiatives for security since 9-11, and htere's little wonder why there needs to be trillions spent on domestic insentives.

Buffalo Boy Mike
April 2, 2009 / 16:29

You can't declare war on a tactic. Terrorism is a tactic.
You declare war on specific groups/countries but not on a tactic.
You fight terror with counter tactics/strategies, good intelligence, good local law enforcement. The problem with this "war" all along is the way it has been conducted and the strategies used to fight the tactic of terrorism.

Let's see; that weapon of mass destruction known as Saddam Hussein (just ask the Kurds about how destructive Saddam Insane was!); has been taken out of Iraq.

Now; the Iraqis have a chance to build a democracy. Going into Iraq seems to have been a pretty good idea!

As for Obama's 'changing the name' of the campaign; isn't that just like the "glo-BULL warming" idiots who are now using "Climate Change" to foist their sky-is-falling agit-prop? Guess they had to change the name since some parts the globe have actually been COOLING down for the last 7 years! And; how does the climate-change crowd explain the fact that the planet Mars is heating up? A planet with NO HUMAN population whatsover?! Hmmmm... maybe the sun simply has hot and cooler cycles, is all! So; Algore and your love-mate David Suzuki... stay the hell out of my wallet with your 'green-schemes!'

Changing the name of the war on terror is just another shell game by the Obama-ites; to appear they're actually doing something in addition to wrecking the economy with liberal trillion-dollar spending plans, which will only saddle the next 4 generations with debt.

I support Canada's troops and efforts in Afghanistan... but if the Afghanis are going to strip rights away from woman again... NATO really needs to ramp it up and kick Taliban butt.

George W. Bush... thank you for a job well done.

IanS
April 3, 2009 / 08:10

Right Uppercut, Usually you and I are in agreement, but on this issue we're worlds apart. The people stripping away women's rights is the current government in Afghanistan that is being propped up by NATO. Fighting the Taliban has nothing to do with what the Afghani gov't is doing.

Plus, to "ramp it up" in theatre would require a massive, MASSIVE, investment of troops and equipment. There's no political will to do that. Let's see, are YOU willing to go? How about your daughters and sons? You want them to go during this "ramp up"?

Jon from (near) Buffalo

Call it "War on Terror". Call it "War on Terrorists:.
Call it "Bush's War" if that makes you happy.

But the bottom line is that if we DON'T fight these so-called 'people', they will bring the fight to US. (And by "US", I don't just mean Americans...)

Getting all hyped up over the title of something is a misplaced priority, in my opinion. See the bigger issue.

For instance, I keeping hearing it called "Hope and Change", but I know it's really nothing but "socialism and vulnerability".

Dave, how did I get lumped together with Argie on this one? I couldnt' disagree with him more.

BAck to my point, the reason we have such catch phrases like "war on terror" and "Time for Change" is because they work on the American Public (They work on us too). You say something catch and the mindless masses love it.

For the record Bush didn't start this economic mess, Clinton did. Bush just did nothing to prevent it.

Sammi, Sammi, Sammi....

There was no false information planted, by Bush or by anyone else.
The intelligence that led to the liberation of Iraq was agreed upon as valid by Clinton and his cohorts, as well as the Republican side--across the board--and everyone felt strongly that this war was justified. It was only later, when they saw political gain possible, that the Dems backed off and blamed Bush.
Believing something that may be partially incorrect is not the same thing as lying.
As for the WMD's....LOOK....IN.....SYRIA.......

April 3, 2009 / 12:57

Dear Mr. Gutfeld;

As a Canadian, I find your lame duck apology for your despicable comments on Canada 's military to be totally inadequate. Perhaps you and your ignorant, redneck audience would find the following to be just as humourous should you care to share it with them, which I don't imagine you will.

Your comments and those of your "commentators" were not only an insult to the men and women of the Canadian armed forces but also demonstrate once again the appalling arrogance and ignorance of Americans such as yourself. Let's take a quick look at American military prowess as seen from a non-American standpoint.

Invade Canada because they have no army? You tried that back in 1812 and got your American butts kicked. The only significant battle that US forces won in that war was the Battle of New Orleans which was actually fought several weeks after a peace treaty had been signed in Europe . And even in this battle, your Old Hickory (was that a reference to his head) depended on the support of a French pirate and his men who betrayed the British. How's that for an amusing play on Andy's nickname?

Actually, when it comes to winning wars on your own, the only one you can lay claim to is your Civil War, which Americans of one side or the other pretty well had to win, didn't they? In the Revolutionary War you had the French to help you. In the Spanish American War, you had the local indigenous populations to help you. Are you finding this amusing?

You largely took a pass on World War One until it was three quarters over and then sent only a token force most of whom saw no action before the spring of 1918. Canada, by contrast put 10% of its entire population in uniform and these men were invariably given the most difficult objectives which they always achieved, unfortunately with the loss of a full 10% of its force - that's killed, not just wounded. And who were your great heroes? Eddie Rickenbacher who managed to shoot down a total of 26 enemy aircraft in about the same amount of time that the Canadian ace, Billy Bishop, shot down 72. Where did your guys learn to fly? Then there was that hillbilly hick from Bear Creek Hollow, Tennessee named Alvin York. What the hell kind of name is that for a soldier? Alvin 's a bloody chipmunk's name! Am I being funny yet?

Of course in World War Two you Americans jumped in when it had only been going on for two years and a quarter years, but you made up for it by taking all the credit. Again, it was mainly the Canadian forces who took the brunt and who were given the toughest assignments in areas like the Italian campaign and at Normandy . Why do we never hear anything from Hollywood about what the Canadians achieved at Juno Beach , generally regarded by most historians, other than Americans, as a tougher objective than Utah or even Omaha Beaches ? Why don't you American know that the Canadian Division was held back from entering Rome on June 6, 1944 so that Georgie Patton's ego could be satisfied, his ego and propensity for slapping Privates being his two most outstanding leadership qualities. Are you bozos laughing now? "But we Americans won the War in the Pacific," I hear you saying.
Yes, after the Australians and Chindits showed you how to defeat the Japanese at jungle warfare.

Unfortunately, those lessons in jungle warfare seemed to have been forgotten by the time you got to Vietnam where about the only things American troops did were drugs and young Vietnamese women. Isn't this just hilarious?

And now you're going to send an additional 17,000 troops to Afghanistan where, given your extremely limited success in Iraq (another war you don't seem to be capable of winning), it's just possible that the Canadian and other lesser UN forces there may feel they would be better off without. You Americans are just a laugh a minute! No wonder the rest of the world loves you so much!

As I suggested at the outset, I doubt if this will be shared with your audience (which, by the way, doesn't and never will include me), but if you do, I'm sure you will all take it in the humorous vein in which it is intended. Excuse me now while I extract my tongue from my cheek.

Peter: Damn you're funny - keep it coming. Its nice to have a laugh on a quiet Friday afternoon at work.

Anyway, just keep in mind that the only reason Russia didn't invade us during the recent Arctic circle dispute is due to the fact we have the big US of A as our neighbours. A Russian official even made a joke about our military indicating we couldn't back up our claims to defend it. How come as Canadians we didn't get upset over that.

You can send a thank you card to Washington, I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

Jon, IF they are going to bring the war to us wouldnt it make more sense to put more into our local authorities and bring home our troops? What are we really doing in Afghanistan and Pakistan other than pissing off the people in those countries? It seems to me the more we stick our nose in things the more hornets we stir up. The more practical tactic to use to fight the tactic of terror would be improving our intelligence AKA CIA tactics, FBI and local law enforcement and then using quick strike methods when we know for sure where they are or to prevent attacks.
Having our entire army over there fighting a few individuals or groups isnt really using our resources efficiently.

to get heard of the newest Kinect? Its truly awesome! I never had so much fun playing game titles before, eventhough I would likely call myself your hardcore player that usually plays game titles like Call of Duty and stuff like that. The Kinect is so different than anything else I have at any time played before. the actual motion controles operate really well, and not just that, but not being forced to use a controller to experience is the personification connected with freedom! No irritating button smashing ever again, a single word will do! You should really think about getting the Kinect!get your kinect
