Habs Countdown - Four And Out

April 23, 2009 @ 08:30

* It's highly recommended to play this audio while reading the following item.

The most surprising thing about this past season for the Montreal Canadiens is that their so-call knowledgeable fans were fooled by it.

I don't want to keep beating a dead horse, but I told you way back last spring after the Habs were eliminated from the playoffs that this team was a dog. As you know I predicted they wouldn't make the playoffs this year, and although I was ultimately wrong, I wasn't too far off and in the end they played a measly four more games than the Maple Leafs this year.

I mention the Leafs because it's important. It's important because as I said from about February on, the Leafs are a better team than the Montreal Canadiens. Maybe not on paper, but definitely on the ice and next year the paper thing will probably change as well.

The Canadiens have very little cap space and ten unrestricted free-agents. That's a big problem and it will be played out this way.

I guarantee for at least the next five years the Toronto Maple Leafs will finish ahead of the Montreal Canadiens in the standings. Do you hear me? Do you comprehend Hab fans, the next five years.

But believe me, that's not saying a lot because the Habs are going to suck the big one.

Bob Gainey went into this 100th anniversary season with a strategy. Use a pile of free-agents who would be hungry as hell to earn new contracts. Often unrestricted free-agents have career years because they're playing for a pot of gold, unfortunately for the Habs, it didn't work out.

Here's why.

Because at the top of that list was Alex Kovalev. I hate to keep saying I told you so, but I did. I said on many occasions if Alex Kovalev is the face of your team, if he's your so-called go-to guy, then you're in huge trouble.

The rest is now history. I'm convinced that during the four game series against Boston Kovalev's main focus was starting his summer as quickly as he could.

As a Leaf fan I'd love the Habs to re-sign this guy, but they probably won't.

We keep hearing that Montreal's off-season focus will be Vincent Lecavalier which is odd when you think about it. With no cap space, to sign Lecavalier the Habs will have to say goodbye to several others, so what's the use of having Lecabalier when you have nothing else?

It's not a pretty situation in Montreal and the fans aren't happy about it, but their discontent will only be heightened next year and at least the next four after that while they're looking up at the Maple Leafs.

But Montreal fans shouldn't be too critical, because as shitty as their team will become, they're just as bad.

Fickle, fair weather and uneducated.

That was played out last night with the way they reacted to their 21 year old goaltender.

Oh I can't wait to hear the spin on this.

Hey Hab fans allow me to offer you a phrase long used by us Leaf Fans... "There's always next year." Keep it, use it, its yours.

That's what they get for booing our anthem!

Hello Pam.. I've always wondered about reactions like yours. Who's forcing you to read this?

Ken Dryden

What a pathetic series:

the total lack of interest by the Habs

the booing of the anthem by the so called fans

the treatment of Price by the so called fans

Look at the bright side Habs fans - you will have a good shot at the top draft pick for the next few years.

Not the end to 100th season the fans were hoping for.

The Habs can now focus on next year.

As to who will be where next time this year will be a crap shoot.

As for the asshats booing, no class.

Go Vancouver.

"I guarantee for at least the next five years the Toronto Maple Leafs will finish ahead of the Montreal Canadiens in the standings." To that I say, put your money were your mouth is, Fred. Even Psychic Nicky wouldn't predict that!!
On the "Fickle, fair weather and uneducated" Leaf fans just need to look in the mirror.
Crow was served to those that said the Habs "would NOT make the playoffs"

Fred, your buddy Hepsy had a wild rant on CHCH last night, really trashing the Habs. One thing on that, show me a real blue f'in Maple leaf on a living tree, anywhere...come on Mark, show me,......come on......did'nt think so....moron.

Last, poor showing for sure, I didn't expect too much against Boston. Thought maybe one game.

Hey Jean: While you are up there, Grab my sweater, and Guy's too!

I just got off the phone with Steve Shutt and Pierre Mondou. They think that they can make it!

Mike, there's no talent in saying something won't happen. The beef is in making a prediction as to what WILL happen. So what do you think? Where will Montreal finish next year? Are they going to top the Leafs or dwell in the cellar? Are they even going to make the playoffs next year? Come on, put YOUR money where your big mouth is.

Very funny Comrade Fred-ski.
5 yrs of leafs 10th and Habs 11th...wow!!!!!!!!!
Lecavalier sounds better than college players?
Yes? No? Maybe?
Kovalev should score 50. He either has no fire in him or a victim of the Russian mob.
He'll be in Washington next season.
Lots of problems in Habs-ville. Good player like Ryder shows them what. Sad.

Speaking of beating a dead horse, there's report out of Quebec that Gainey bought a horse. First thing he said to it was 'why the long face?' The horse looked at Gainey and asked the same thing.

We all know that CH stands for centre hice. The red white and blue fans booed me when I took a lap around the rink and triped on the red carpet at my induction ceremony...

Congratulations Habs fans on last night. No riot. You should be all proud. Interesting times indeed as it sure appears all those pending free agents must have been counting down the minutes before they could leave Montreal.

What's worse is my dad couldn't get the game out in B.C. last night and he went to the station's transmitter and the police showed up...it, it just didn't end well. I know how Carey Price feels.

Lecavilier would never okay a trade to the Habs after this pathetic showing. He will stay in Tampa as that team gets better with the second overall pick and an improving Stamkos. At least Montreal proved during this series that they have the worst most classless fanbase in the NHL.

Freeway
April 23, 2009 / 18:17

Fred, I'll take that bet any day but I know you don't gamble and I respect that. There is NO WAY the Leafs will finish ahead of the Habs in the next 5 straight years. If you really think that then you're not as smart as I thought you were. Sure, you can have a HATE FEST for the Habitants as I can despise the Leafs. The best thing happening in MTL is new ownership. That should be a big concern for the Maple Laughs. Don't think Burke will single handedly get your team La Coupe Stanley..ain't happening bro..ain't happening.
As for the fans booing the team. When you pay players the kind of money they make and they come up with a performance like that, any PAYING fan has the right to booo. PERIOD.

Would I? Did I last night? NO, I had a beer and went to bed wondering how many hours I wasted watching 86 games this year.
It sucks.
In hindsight, the extra 4 games were a bigger waste of time, I'll give you that much.

East Coast Dave

Ladies and Gentlemen, Mike from Lowville once again proving Freddies point...."uneducated"!!

Mike tell me, who of any significance is going to want to sign with this organization in the next 5 years? No one that's who. Every UFA on this team is going to bolt from Montreal and never look back. Hell some may even take a pay cut.

Go ahead, be proud that the Habs got 4 more games than the Leafs because I agree, that will be it for the post season for many years.

Us Leaf fans who look in the mirror see realists looking back. Short term pain for long term gain.

I'm going to miss the "Habs watch" and slagging you Mike but I won't miss your "well thought out" comments.

See ya at the draft

Mike from Lowville
April 23, 2009 / 19:55

Freeway, I only watched half of the last two games. Caught half of Lie To Me and all of Bones last night. So, not a total waste of time........I guess. Oh well, we can wait till next year and laugh at the Leafs AGAIN!

Hey East Coast, I'm jealous. You got Mike to respond to you even though it was only GFY. I asked him direct questions but got nothin' back. Were the questions too tough for him or do you think that he's well aware that the Habs have nowhere to go but down?

On behalf of... me, I'd like to thank Horo and Freeway for coming back and taking their lumps like good sports.

Who are we cheering for in the playoffs now?

Hmmmm. I think it's Detroit's cup to lose this year.

"The Canadiens have very little cap space and ten unrestricted free-agents."

32 million in cap space is "little".

Jose
April 24, 2009 / 11:07

I think Gainey is losing it. Critising the Tampa GM.
Players read they may be traded all the time. Big Andropov experienced it all season. hmmm, he's in the playoffs and the Leafs aren't.
What do you do in San Jose?

Gene
April 24, 2009 / 19:28

To Anonymous.. the Habs have 32 million in cap space now, but they have ten unrestricted free agents and two restricted free agents, so to answer your question, yes 32 million is "little."
To replace the players they have, at todays prices would cost way more than 32 million, so there's the dilemma.

Freeway

I'm cheering for the Flames for the moment although I'm liking the Canucks and Luongo.
Roberto is a paisan from St. Leo and he's going to lead us to Olympic GOLD.
