Spread It Around

March 11, 2009 @ 12:32

The OLG is back in the news, and once again it's not for anything nice.

You really have to wonder what they were thinking. Purchasing 22 cars for give-away is rather intriguing, but buying 22 German and Mexican made Mercedes wasn't too bright given the current economic climate.

Even though the steel used in Mercedes is made in Canada and there are thousands of people employed by Mercedes-Benz across Canada it still doesn't look good when the Canadian government is in the process of bailing out General Motors and Chrysler.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission is quite the group. If they aren't paying millions to their own vendors, they're misplacing bags of unused tickets on street corners.

But enough of that, I have a solution that could turn the reputation of the OLG around almost instantly.

They could contribute to the wonky economy by splitting up the prizes.

If tonight's jackpot is four million, they should make four separate draws and create four new millionaires. This might not be the best example, because the pot is rather low compared to recent weeks.

A couple of weeks ago it was 39 million. That would have been a great opportunity for the OLG to make big noise about "spreading the wealth around" and changing the lives of 39 people instead of one, or two, or as it turned out, three people.

Chances are, if you win 20 million or so, you gonna spend some but you'll probably put most of it in the bank.

But if twenty people win a million, they'll probably spend a big chunk of it by paying off their mortgages and buying some toys. Spread it out, and more comes back into the system.

But don't hold your breath, the OLG claims that sales go up as the jackpot goes up, so if they were to hold prizes to a million bucks sales would suffer.

But you have to wonder by how much, and wonder if they couldn't sacrifice that on the premise of helping more Canadians in these tough economic times.

Ford said give people incentives to buy new cars.
Jim Flaterty said in effect, he doesn't agree and added that's so they can sell cars?
Duh....yeah..they want to SELL cars not have the gov't own part of their business.

A few weeks ago I bought a couple of Super 7 tickets.
Checked them later.
Had the 1st number.
Had the 2nd #.
Had the 3rd #.
Had the 4th #.
Had the 5th #.
Now I'm standing.
Missed the 6th by two.
Missed the 7th by one.
So close.
What do you think it was worth?
The pot was 30 million.
I got $104.00.
Almost felt ripped off.
Spread it around.

March 11, 2009 / 16:26

Split the lottery any way you see fit, its still a sucker's bet.

If you were to give me the choice, say $2 for a ticket to win a Mercedes (any model) or $2 for a ticket to win a Buick Enclave, I can honestly say that my $2 would buy the Mercedes ticket. OLGA probably was thinking along the same lines. A non issue at

James Edgar
March 11, 2009 / 16:33

They should increase the secondary prizes. 39 milion first prize . second was probably 1 Million. As the pot goes up more and more should go into the lesser prizes. $104 for 5 numbers is Crazy.

March 11, 2009 / 16:40

can't survive on a million, these days, can ya?

OLG fails again. Do you think the same clowns run GO Transit?

March 11, 2009 / 18:05

Long time ago after McGuinty's second win I wrote and asked him what he was doing about our health services and more specifically were there more medical students being trained in our Universities.

NO REPLY!!!!!!

If he and his stooges surrounding him cannot reply to a simple letter how would we expect waiting room times to lessen.

OLG, Go transit...and important areas---Education, Health---what do they do for their pay in the Ont Gov't???
I'm listening but I doubt there will be words.

Maybe John Tory wouldn't have been different but he would have been different in that he would TRY.

Here is an idea I think they should use, You buy a ticket and the numbers are good for a week. The drawings take place every day and each days prize is $1 million.

"Speyside Phil"
March 11, 2009 / 18:50

I have always wondered why there wasn't more big prizes spread around as per your idea Fred. I think it's a great idea and I also think that sales would boom. As for the car issue the decision to buy Mercedes was made long before the economic problems came to light.

Mike from Lowville
March 11, 2009 / 20:36

Nigel Trousershrapnel your comment is so typical. Your ignorance is showing! Don't worry, God takes care of drunks and fools.

Right Uppercut
March 11, 2009 / 21:01

"Spreading the wealth around" is too close to the ideas of the "Globama" maniacs. Let the prize stand as is.

However; it is depressing to hear a recent radio spot saying "(Name of person) came to Canada X number of years ago... and now he/she is 14 million dollars richer thanks to (name of lottery)!"

No mention of personal responsibility and WORKING HARD to EARN money.

Rather; it implies, "Come to Canada and play the lottery with your taxpayer-funded welfare dollars while you sit on your fat ass."

March 11, 2009 / 21:55

Allan...give it up. Tory royally screwed up....several times!! How would he be better?? Do you know how many emails these guys get? There is no way to respond to all of them. You're such an idiot.

Rick C in Oakville
March 11, 2009 / 23:51

Sorry but they probably wouldn't sell as many tickets if they put up a Ford Tauras or Chev Impala as the grand prize, Mercedes, BMW and Porsches' names have great Cachet.

Thorpee in the Falls
March 12, 2009 / 01:10

Rick C,
Something to be said about Quality and not Quantity. If we really concentrated on building things to last like a Mercedes & BMW, we'll all have disposable cash to spend on other things to help keep the machine running. We seem to build things to break down in a timely matter. Unforunately, these are bad times to buy new things.

March 12, 2009 / 06:56

So now we are going to be guilted into buying North American cars?? Maybe if the North American Auto makers would have woken up 30 years ago, like everyone told them to, they wouldn't be in the mess they are in.

Their own arrogance got them where they are today.

Rick C - you are bang on.

Mike from Lowville,
Are you gonna start the boycott of Tim Horton's for offering up 35 TOYOTA's as their main prize? I guess they just don't get it either....
I'm writing this as I foolishly grab another drink.
Scary to think that you're sober when offer up the crap that you consider an informed opinion.

March 12, 2009 / 10:49

LOL anybody bother look at a picture of a B200? LOL I rather have a chevy Cobalt.

The whole thing is a bit of a non story as far as I am concerned.

The decision was made 9 months ago,Mercedes do have more draw than Chevys and as far as Tims offering Toyotas? WTF does that have to do with a goverment agency?

Nigel Trousershrapnel
March 12, 2009 / 11:12

If you'd read my first comment, I did state that this is a non issue. As far as the Tim Horton's thing, just providing more ammo for the conspiracy theorists. They're out there you know. You can't see them but they're out there......

March 12, 2009 / 11:12

OLG backtracked , said the promotion was planned months ago before the so called BIG 3 went in a tail spin. mentioned new staff at the OLG due to previous problems.
Blah blah...

Gov't and transparency???....hahaha...

Sammi-John Tory---duck!!!!

March 12, 2009 / 11:15

Guess there could be a problem in some minds of what kind of car is a prize until you win one.

mike from oakville
March 12, 2009 / 14:02

James - i'm sure you'd find someone willing to trade you a cobalt for the mercedes if you win...

James Edgar
March 12, 2009 / 14:17

Mike, no doubt! You have to admit it is Fugly though! i won't win though. I don't waste money in Casinos. I'd be the first to admit I'm no brain surgen but I'm not quite dumb enough to waste hard earned cash in a Casino.

James Edgar
March 12, 2009 / 14:19

Mike you're right! But you have to admit the B200 is Fugly! I won't be winning a b200 though, I'd be the first to admit I'm no brain surgen but I'm not quite dumb enough to waste hard earned cash in a casino.

Pauly Walnuts
March 12, 2009 / 14:29

Obviously nobody has owned a mercedes lately... they're sh!t.

March 12, 2009 / 17:36

I also agree withe reply on getting so little. I once had 6 numbers and was shaking, but one of them i was told is the bonus, so i thought ok, still great...96 bucks?

Freddie you are partly right. Yes you could in theory break up the lottery prize amts into more winners but the reality is the OLG gets more buyers when the prize amts go up and everyone gets greedy.

Greed is why a giant pot results in long lineups.

However i believe with modifying your comment on more winners is valid. WHy have one or two huge winners. If i knew that the odds were better and OLG spread it out into more winners but in smaller amts, i would actually buy more tickets.

I only buy occasionally because iknow the odds are againt me, but if i knew they weren;t?

I don't think it matters one way or the other.

That would carry more weight if Canucknuckle-headed-lefties would ALSO boycott CUBAN vacations.

No sense in propping up a commie dictatorship that provides NO RIGHTS for the ENTIRE population, let alone a coffee-shop worker, is there?

Castro et al can eat my ass-cookies.

March 13, 2009 / 06:27

Mike from Lowille - there was way more to that story than the press told us.

Nigel Trousershrapnel
March 13, 2009 / 09:31

Mike from Lowville usually ignores the facts that don't support his asinine assumptions. Makes it easier for him to believe he's always right.

Mike from Lowville
March 13, 2009 / 09:58

George, ya think? Your telling me the press doesn't tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth!! Oh my.

Right Upper-smut, no sense punishing the citizens of Cuba! Just because preferential treatment exists for those who are members of the Communist Party or who hold positions of power within the government. Where access to transportation, work, housing, university education and better health care are a function of status within the government or the Communist Party. That kind of thing would NEVER happen in the U.S. or God forbid....Canada! The problem is, true socialism (socialism somewhat like Sweden) is mixed and dictated by communism in Cuba. Slowly, public sector employment is shifting to private sector. As the Castro's of the day die off you will see a major shift in Cuba's society and economy.

March 13, 2009 / 12:13 you're agreeing with me yet you made a decision not to go to Tim Horton's based on what you heard in the news. So which is it?? You don't have to try too hard to look like an idiot, do you.

March 13, 2009 / 12:29

Mike, Why let the facts get in the way of a good story, eh?

You'd be out of work in Sweden, too. 6.7% according to the OECD. 7.7 in Canada and 5.4 in the US. Quite the utopia Sweden is, eh?

March 13, 2009 / 12:52

I find that Tim Horton's coffee isn't that good. I can't get a regualr there---it's always double double. I've refused many toasted bagels when I asked for not toasted. Their baked happy service---less than enjoyable-especially when I refuse the toasted orducts I didn't want...had a hash brown there once that tasted like cardboard.
As for Roll Up---to win or lose???...mostly lose and at more than the 9-1 they say.
I know they pay their staff as little as possible to reap big fortunes but still if you work at something take pride in it....there!!!!!

Nigel Trousershrapnel
March 13, 2009 / 14:12

If you speak as well as you spell when you order your coffee and bagel, it's a wonder you get anything at all.
Your use of the terms, toasted, baked and hash, probably tell the whole story.

March 13, 2009 / 20:58

Who's blaming or punishing the people of Cuba, Mikey?
If tourism dropped right off, maybe they'd finally see through that bovine scatology known as communism being pushed by the Castro-holes and other party seals in Cuba, your dearly-beloved Sweden and other countries of that ilk. Perhaps a good counter-revolution would occur... in the name of freedom.

South Africa was boycotted by Canada; so why doesn't that apply to Cuba? Or; is it simply because Apartheid wasn't acceptable to the lefties, but communism (and the commie-backed Africa National Congress in South Africa as well) is acceptable to the looney left?

Communism/socialism IS apartheid though... it separates humans from their ability to achieve as INDIVIDUALS; forcing them by fear of death to work for the almighty socialist state, and have nothing personal to show for their labors.

Arguing for communism makes as much sense as a hollywood liberal, a New York democrat, or your typical university 'professor' in Canada. No sense at all.

I do agree on one thing... once the Castro-clique kicks off; we can only hope Cuba will shift to a free market system... and FREEDOM for all to live their lives not having to cringe under the hammer and sickle.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
