March 26, 2009 / 10:56
The timing is bad, but you have McGuinty all wrong.
March 26, 2009 / 11:00
Why am I not surprised that someone named 'Elliot' would be a supporter of McGuinty???
March 26, 2009 / 11:22
Fred, I totally agree with you about Dullton, but you are too kind to John Tory and you're fogetting one important fact: faith based schools are a recipe for disaster and would have set a dangerous precedent in Ontario. It wasn't an honest idea, as you say, it was stupid and reckless...
March 26, 2009 / 11:25
"Elliot" is McGuinty's online alias.
For anybody that thinks this is a good idea, ponder it as you'll be filling your gas tank which will be 8% more as a result. (quick calculation 85 cents per litre will be 92. $1 a litre will be 1.08)
The Feds lower the GST by 2% and this knumbskull takes the PST and spreads it out over more things instead of reducing taxes. Take the struggling economy and hold its head underwater and put it out of its misery.
Good for Dalton, I applaud him for knowing how to play to us Ontarians. And to Ontarians... choke on what you voted for. Consider it justice.
March 26, 2009 / 11:26
Pam, it works in other provinces, its not a new concept.
March 26, 2009 / 11:57
The eastern provinces all have the HST. They only went along with it because of great pressure from the federal government.
Why did they do it??? Because they have no clout with the Feds due to their small population... PEI at 140,000 people doesn't even deserve to be a province with Federal funding and transfer payments and beyond that all 4 of the eastern provinces add up to a population that's half of the GTA population and a fifth of Ontario's population.
This is a big mistake that will collectively cost Ontarian individuals a fortune...
The mighty and powerful province of Ontario said they would never, ever adopt the HST.
What has this lying scumbag been promised to sell out Ontario?
What's next, making Ontario officially bilingual?
Crawl back in your hole McGuinty.
March 26, 2009 / 12:02
Pam - Pauly is right, other provinces do have this policy and its a great thing. The parents have the choice to send their kids to a specialized school (whether its faith based or artsy based or even athletic based...).
However, if you want your kid to have a run of the mill education where he'll face a weekly lockdown stick with the public schools.
March 26, 2009 / 12:21
Argie, Pauly: Read my post: I didn't not say it was a new concept, but your comments are well taken. Am I to assume you both support black-centric schooling in Toronto?
March 26, 2009 / 12:32
Pam: I'm not sure of black centric school as its based on race - religion is another matter.
But since they now have black centric schools, they should also have faith based.
March 26, 2009 / 13:08
Argie they Already have "the One true faith" paid for why would we need anything more?
March 26, 2009 / 13:28
Argie your comments on the quality of the Public School system is as usual ignorant and wrong. I will put my public school up to your Catholic school any day of the week. Catholic schools providing a better education is a myth that is spread by people like yourself that think because it is "Catholic" it is better. But that is not what is is about.
The Harmonizing of the GST and PST is beyond ridiculous. He excuse that it will stimulate the economy is one of the biggest lies that I have ever heard come from him. There should be a revolt about this. It will cost the regualr citizen a fortune at the worst time.
March 26, 2009 / 13:28
James: I think its only fair that everyone has the choice. Also, there are much better Catholic schools that are not funded that I would prefer my kids attend over the publicly funded Catholic schools.
March 26, 2009 / 13:50
Andrew: It sounds like you grew up in a rich WASPy neighborhood that had great public schools. Unfortunately that is not the case with most public schools.
March 26, 2009 / 14:04
Trust me Argie, I didn't grow up WASPy. However, I didn't grow up in the inner city either.
But your comments still paint all schools with one brush. That is like saying if you go to Church than the priest will touch young boys. It may have happened in a few churches but it doesn't happen in everyone.
The comments remind me of my brother-in-law. He goes on about how the Catholic school system is the best and public schools suck. Of course, he votes Liberal every chance he gets and he is the one who is unemployed.
He also spouts off about getting a business degree at university is better than my college education. Again..me high paying good job..him unemployed.
Sorry, my rant is over.
March 26, 2009 / 14:25
Good for you Andrew! I suppose you feel confident your kids (if you have any) will get a wonderful educational experience at their public school. Good luck with that.
March 26, 2009 / 14:42
My understanding is that a new home over 400 thousand will be taxed. We can add in the new development charges being added by each municipality due to the so called "Walkerton water screw-up" and along with the recession that should just about shut down new home construction. Well done Dalton, nothing like doing your share to stimulate the economy!
March 26, 2009 / 15:22
Argie....please explain what you mean by someone named "Elliot".
March 26, 2009 / 15:53
I meant that when see the name 'elliot' I automatically think of the character 'Smithers' from The Simpson's. Can't help it.
March 26, 2009 / 16:14
Nice back peddling Argie. I think I know what you really meant.
By the way, I do not support any political party. Fred has it wrong about McGuinty. The same slant he puts on McGuinty, he puts on Harper the other way to say how great he is.
March 26, 2009 / 16:15
there are good private(catholic) schools and bad private schools just like there are good public schools and bad public schools...unfortunately it has a lot to do with the neighborurhood you live in and the calibre of teachers that come, stay & give a damn...i'm a public supporter but when my kids continually get bullied without recourse i have second thoughts...
March 26, 2009 / 16:36
John Tory, honest man - bad politician.
Dalton McGuinty, excellent liar - great politician.
Ontario, dying province - mindless voters.
HEAR, HEAR
March 26, 2009 / 16:37
I do have kids and their education could always use improvement. But I wouldn't send them to the Catholic school.
March 26, 2009 / 18:04
Pam, no I wasn't particularly for it, but I didn't see any harm. The greater harm was re-electing the lame duck Dolton.
To the rest of the discussion, I am a product of the Catholic School System, and as Wayner states there are good and bad schools in both systems. In my area the Catholic schools easily and consistenty out performed the public school in quality of education.
As for the "catholicness" of the education, its a croc. Nothing catholic about it, in fact we learned more about other religions than anything else. The Religion class was predominantly a hippiesc lovey dovey fest of how ones problems (poverty, drug abuse, violence, etc) is a product of society and in no way should the responsiblity be shouldered by the individual. I can't justify such a mind shrinking program. As Argie says, if you want a Catholic education, there are better places for it.
I truely believe that 1 system is best, with a uniform high standard of education... higher than anything that is the standard now. Uniforms are mandatory until post-secondary. Religion should be taught as was tought in this faux-cahtolic system in that you learn about all religions and the lack of... but omit the socialist mind shrinking kumbaya part of the curicullum.
March 26, 2009 / 18:07
Pam, sorry misread your question. I am against the segregation of blacks from the mainstream school system as a solution to the problems being attributed to the schools system. The school system is like anything else, you can only get something out if you put effort in.
March 26, 2009 / 20:14
Dalton Mcquinty is nothing but an IDIOT and a corrupt politician....he is a liar and a scammer and he is one of the biggest mistakes in politics that has ever been elected for the Ontario government. This man does not deserve another 4 years in 2011. BUT GUESS WHAT? STUPID LIBERAL VOTERS WILL VOTE HIM IN AGAIN!!! He doesnt know what he is doing He thinks that if there is no money for health care or whatever then he just says: "oh well, we will just get it from the middle class taxpayer, that's all" and this is happening more so since he has been elected as premier of this province. Remember what Mcquinty said in his advertising campaign for the election: "i won't lower your taxes but i wont raise them either" He'll just add more!!...Remember what he said in his most recent campaign? Let me remind you: NO NEW TAXES!! DALTON McQUINTY IS A LIAR AND A CHEAT AND WILL USE ANY EXCUSE TO EMPTY THE POCKETS OF ALL ONTARIANS!! Thanks a lot you moronic Liberal voters! I hope you all suffer MORE than the people who were smart enough NOT to vote for him!!
March 26, 2009 / 20:41
Serious question: Given the disdain for McGuinty on this site and the admiration for the Harper government, how does one reconcile bashing McGuinty for harmonizing the taxes when Jim Flaherty is in favour of it?
March 26, 2009 / 20:46
Just ran through the budget, corporate taxes lowered.
Amazing, Flaherty suggested this a year ago. Dalton poo pooed this idea.
Too late the horses have all left the barn.
John Deere etc are never coming back, nice work Dalton.
March 26, 2009 / 21:02
Dalton is just trying to turn Ontario into a third world nation so that all our third world newcomers will feel right at home - back in the poverty they left.
March 26, 2009 / 22:43
The fact that Ontario is now a "Have Not" province is evidence enough that Dalton McGuinty is a complete tools. With all its resources, manufacturing etc. Ontario should never (NEVER!) have been classified as a HAVE NOT province.
March 26, 2009 / 23:30
I'm surprised that noone has started singing the old "if you want good services, you have to pay more taxes" song yet. Where are the resident lefties / Union apologists?
Or do they only pull that lie out at contract time? Could it be that even they have they finally realized that the more money we give government, the fatter government gets and the fatter it gets, the more money it needs?
Nah, that just makes too much sense.
March 26, 2009 / 23:55
"Dalton is just trying to turn Ontario into a third world nation so that all our third world newcomers will feel right at home - back in the poverty they left."
Right on, Alan!
Gee, no surprise those 3rd world wonders vote... LIBERAL after being let in, is it?
Trudeau pulled the same shit.
Isn't 'diversity' wonderful?
F**k me.
March 27, 2009 / 00:10
No, I think it's F**K YOU!
March 27, 2009 / 09:47
I wonder if the healthcare system will help me after I have a heart-attack from all the stress Dolton is causing me.
March 27, 2009 / 13:04
Michael D, I intend to not let good old Dolton get a cent from me.
I'm either paying cash under the table where I can, or just not buying it. Maybe make a trip to Buffalo once a month and stock up. Imagine if everyone did that... good old Dolt would get the message pretty f'n quick.
March 27, 2009 / 20:36
Mikey in Lowville; it's useless to express your abnormal desires to me.
They're more suited to the slip-you-the-tongue liberals that you love.
March 28, 2009 / 11:48
Funny how your hero's in Ottawa are applauding McGuinty now that he has harmonized the provincial taxes and plan's to drop provincial corporate taxes down to 10%. You remember your hero, Floundering Flaherty saying Ontario would not be a good place to do business if Ontario does NOT do all of the above. Do you right wingers know if your punched.....or bored? Pauly Walnuts, your logic is, well shall we be nice and say, moronic.
March 28, 2009 / 12:25
Mike.. I think you're punched..
Nobody is arguing that the Feds pushed for this.. and believe me, that doesn't make it right...
The issue you hear is McGuinty's methods.. he's a freakin liar.. he said he wouldn't harmonize, and he rejected lower corporate taxes..
He's a flip floppin liar.. that's the point..
And believe it or not Mike, I'm pissed at the harmonized tax.. and pissed that the Cons want it.. but again, they're up front and truthful about it..
McGuinty is a freakin liar..
How do you not get it?
