BS is right! As for doing "green stuff", I'll do it if it saves me money. Let the wealthy philanthropists do the other stuff.
March 28, 2009 / 13:06
I consider myself incredibly cynical, but you have to draw the line somewhere.
Earth Hour isn't about solving anything directly, it's about raising awareness. And clearly, it has, because even people like you are writing about it.
Fred, you might want to read up on something called the nirvana fallacy...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana_fallacy
As for John B, attitudes like yours are especially sickening. Everyone needs to do their part, and money shouldn't be the only motivator.
March 28, 2009 / 13:25
I'm not really sure what you're saying... other than I think your endorsing everything I wrote..
I'm not saying Earth Hour is useless because it won't eliminate global warming.. I'm saying it useless because its nothing more than a symbolic little time waster thats making money for WWF and the Al Gores of the world.
Screw the awareness aspect.. we're all aware.. we can't help but be aware because of everything that's being shoved down our throats on a daily basis.
And its got nothing to do with the so-called nirvana fallacy. Believe me, I know the money I'm spending on all the crap I'm about to put in my house won't eliminate Global warming, but it will help a lot more than turning the lights off for an hour one day a year..
March 28, 2009 / 14:07
It's all about awareness.
Making the next generation "aware" and thinking about dimming the lights and doing what ever else they can.
My kids are looking forward to it.
A bunch of teenagers in the basement , drinking my beer with the lights out for an hour!!.
They've been thinking about it all week probably.
It's been all over the newspapers and other media all week.
Cheers,
Al
ps.
Fred, fix the clock on your posts.
Your reply to Daniel says 13:25 hrs.
But I am writing this at 13:09 hrs.
Perhaps Lakefield and Brampton are in a different time zone.
March 28, 2009 / 17:09
Fred, I think you are confusing Al Gore with John McCain, McCain is the one with all the Houses, last I checked Gore had one
March 28, 2009 / 17:10
Fred...I have often disagreed with you but this time I agree with every word you wrote.
I was once an Al Gore follower and then as time marched on I started wondering if the Al Gore bashers had some legitamacy to what they were saying. I still strongly believe in recycling and saving energy and each doing our part.
One thing that really stands out is the Jupiter's climate is undergoing major change. Did man cause that?? Unless someone is not telling us something, Jupiter has no-one living on it. So how is this happening??? Aw...it's a cycle, they are telling us now. Check this link..... http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/jupiter_spots_040421.html
this is just one example. The environment is big business. Like I said, we should not be wasteful and we should take care of our planet. But we are not to blame!
March 28, 2009 / 22:40
March 29, 2009 / 08:29
The Earth People are already saving energy in Canada by buying shirts that are probably manufactured in China, so that's one up on us, right?
It never ceases to amaze me how many lights are kept on in malls and office buildings everyday. A Sunday night project to consider: head down King St. West and count them. I may take up that mantle sometime.
March 29, 2009 / 10:52
Lack of travel brought gas prices down. Get smart people.
March 29, 2009 / 14:19
....and Fred's lawn will look great all summer.....
March 29, 2009 / 15:02
All last summer the tree huggers were crying about how the big 3 automakers need to stop making gas guzzlers, how we need to tax carbon emissions, how Harper is an idiot becuase he believes taxing emissions will stall the economy.
Where are those tree huggers now? Where is all the environmental activism now? Everybody is hoping the big 3 recover so that the economy does stay in the crapper for the next decade.
I agree with Fred, I'm all for environmentalism that is at the lowest common denominator. Make it that it is in everyone own personal interest, and it will spread like wild fire. Make it costly and tedious and it will go no where fast. I'm not self-centered, its just the way our society works.
March 29, 2009 / 15:48
Ladies and gentlemen...Mike from Lowville. Our apologies!!
March 29, 2009 / 18:42
Freddie P. you're not often wrong but you're right again.
It is a load of crap. People need to do their bit 8760 hours per year not just one.
I have considered upgrading my 30 year old windows and furnace but you know what, I use about $1000/year of natural gas and that includes furnace, fireplace, stove, dryer and hot water heater.
I have changed out the majority of my lightbulbs to CFLs, installed a programmable thermostat and did away with my airconditioner.
I do my bit everyday and good for you Fred for putting your money into the economy and reducing your energy use.
Here is the sad part, when everyone has cut back on their power use, water use and natural gas use the unit price of those commodities will go up because those businesses will see a reduction in their bottom lines. So in the end you may have reduced your consumption but not your costs.
Don't think you will saving the earth either because there are a few billion people wanting all the shit we have and they don't care how much coal they have to burn to power it. And that will dwarf any reductions we make.
I say just carry on and do what you see fit.
March 29, 2009 / 20:15
By the way, those CFL lights, or mini fluorescents....do more harm than good. They emit gases from the toxic gas that is in them. I got rid of all mine. I did not notice any change in my electric bill....if you ask me...it's a scam.
March 29, 2009 / 20:53
Al Gore is the biggest hypocrite around when it comes to the environment.
We did the Earth Hour thing here. Probably the only house in our neighbourhood to do so. It wasn't a big deal. Just lights out for an hour. However, there's more to be done throughout the year, and it has nothing to do with what Al Gore spews.
March 29, 2009 / 22:29
Ed wrote, "Here is the sad part, when everyone has cut back on their power use, water use and natural gas use the unit price of those commodities will go up because those businesses will see a reduction in their bottom lines."
I could not have said it better myself.
March 30, 2009 / 09:04
Freddie, take heart.
It's only 'cynicism' if you're wrong. But you're NOT wrong! So, it's just 'realism'.
So-called "man-made" "global" "warming" (all quotes intentional) is the single biggest hoax ever perpetuated on the human race.
It is utter nonsense. Period.
I've always been a recycler whenever possible and reasonable. But whenever I hear about some stupid Al-Gore-ish nonsense like this, I leave an extra light on, just to piss him and his little minions off.
March 30, 2009 / 11:02
Just an innocent idea, meant only to spark some good; now filled with cynicism from people like you and stripped to find its worth by people like Al Gore.
Nice to hear you and your family are going to be cozy!
March 30, 2009 / 11:04
Why didn't the ACC just turn off the lights on the Leafs game? That could have saved the planet quite a bit. Heck, why not just cancel the last 6 games..do us all a favour.
March 30, 2009 / 11:27
Sammi, those f'n lightbulbs that Suzuki is so proudly promoting contain Mercury. Mercury mining and refining is very toxic to the environment, and then when you're done with them you're supposed to drive to your local Home Depot and drop them off for recycling... which is a load of crap, people will just toss them. The Mercury seeps into the ground water and into the lakes and oceans. Suzuki says that coal power plants produce more mercury into the environment... In Ontario, we don't use Coal anymore... and even if we did replace it with a nuclear one instead.
Let's face it, this whole electrical conservation push is so that they can power more people with less infrastructure, and as Ed put it, so they can charge you more per watt.
March 30, 2009 / 20:45
"Earth Hour, glo-BULL warming/climate change," just more scams to separate more GREEN from my wallet in the guise of "oh my the sky is falling we gotta save the planet" BULLSHIT.
Al Gore and David Suzuki ought to pound a globe up each other's rectal canal.
That would be some good "GAIA bashing," indeed!
March 30, 2009 / 23:20
Freddie,
The new flat screen televisions are definitely not energy efficient, thus you do not see any energy efficient stickers on them.
Especially, beware of the Plasma televisions, they are real pigs when it comes to power consumption. As a matter of fact they give off so much heat you can heat a small room.
March 31, 2009 / 10:11
People are skeptical. And we all have a right to be.
One example tho...when the US faced a gas crisis many yrs ago they reduced the highway speed limit in most states to 55mph. They conservered a lot of fuel.
If we all do things it will have an effect...there will be fools who won't but that's ok too.
March 31, 2009 / 11:38
Awareness is everything, Fred!
It was 30 years before the anti-smoking lobby took hold, from the discovery of its link to cancer and lung disease, to the point where it was banned in offices and public transit. These days any one who smokes is an outcast. The point is, the anti-smoking lobby took hold, and Earth Hour will too, whether you like it or not.
March 31, 2009 / 12:17
Trish, instead of "awareness" for 1 hour a year how about they turn off all unneccessary lighting and other electrical devised every minute of every day? Instead of reminding me for 1 hour out of 8760, how about we do like mom used to tell us... turn off the lightswhen you leave the room? Also how about we dont' leave the AC blasting in businesses to the point that they're like a meat locker?
March 31, 2009 / 12:55
Trish: You're wrong about smoking. Among the young (you know that useless generation between the ages of 20 & 30), smoking rates are up.
March 31, 2009 / 14:52
Al Gore is the devil.....
http://wiw.org/%7Ejess/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/gore.jpg
March 31, 2009 / 15:02
Al Gore the devil??? I never thought the devil would have a lisp.
March 31, 2009 / 15:38
With a name like Gore, can he be anything else?
April 1, 2009 / 11:11
Quite right, Argie. But they're so useless, they don't count.
April 4, 2009 / 22:06
More snow coming this week in April?
glo-BULL 'warming,' indeed.

a wide screen 32" will have be less sq inches that a 32" tube, so you would probably want the next size up which is a 37". a square screen lcd/plasma is the same as a tube for any given size, it just looks different becuase of the curvature of the tube screen.
