Bad Day For Tory

March 6, 2009 @ 07:53

There will be a lot of smug faces in the Ontario riding of Haliburton -Kawartha Lakes-Brock today, and I guess to some extent it's warranted.

John Tory was the victim of another huge backfire last night as he lost a by-election which will lead to his resignation today.

He was defeated by Liberal Rick Johnson in a riding that was considered a major Conservative stronghold.

Yes, there will be a lot of happy people today, running around laughing and snorting about the big shot from Toronto getting smacked for trying to hijack their riding.

They taught him a lesson. They sent a message to politicians who think they can take them for granted. They gave the Conservatives the boot and elected the Liberal guy.

Problem is, there's another side to this story and it probably outweighs the brief moments of exhilaration that will be enjoyed today.

From this day forward, to the next provincial election, the riding of Haliburton -Kawartha Lakes-Brock is under the direction of the truth challenged, non-active, zero productive Dalton McGuinty.

That's the prize for dumping John Tory.

Yes, Rick Johnson is the MPP, but what can he do for the riding when the man who leads the party has been in hiding since the economy went south? What can Rick Johnson do except play the party line and hope that Dalton McGuinty stops blaming the federal government for everything.

What can Rick Johnson do for Haliburton -Kawartha Lakes-Brock if Dalton McGuinty can't do anything for the province?

The roads in Ontario are in horrible shape. Wait times in hospitals continue to be a huge problem. Public transit is lagging and outlaws continue to control Caledonia.

If any of those people who turned their backs on the Conservatives last night feel good this morning, it may not last.

You've traded your best long term interests for instant gratification. You've bought into a bad government with a king sized liar at the helm. You've handed the reins to a nice guy in Rick Johnson, but you've pretty much guaranteed that your riding will become stagnant.

In a McGuinty government, Rick Johnson will take his seat at Queens Park, but that will be the extent of it. He'll be told to respond to any problem or any issue by blaming the feds, it's the McGuinty way.

If John Tory had been elected it could have been different. The party leader could have gone to Queens Park and made some noise on your behalf. He could have kept pressing the issues and exposing the sitting Liberals for what they are and forced their hand on a few issues.

But now, you have nothing working for you. Nothing at all.

Don't get me wrong, the whole by-election process can stink and the way this one came down didn't sit well with many. But it wasn't unique, it wasn't against the rules and actually, if you had scratched the below the surface, you may have determined that Tory was the best option.

But revenge got the better of you and now Dalton McGuinty has a hold on you.

Good Luck.

Fred, quit crying over spilled milk! If it was meant to be, he would be.

Give me a break, Fred. You’re crying a sob story over a guy who cannot win an election. You claim John Tory would have made a difference. He never did. He was given his first seat and promptly lost it. What big difference did he make then? He has no idea how to run a campaign at all. This is probably the best thing for the Tories. Get rid of Tory and bring in someone who can win an election. He can’t. It is plain and simple. He is not a good leader or a good politician. You may seem to think he would be better than Miller and McGuinty but there is no proof to that. He blew several chances to win. He should have destroyed McGuinty. He failed in epic proportions. Ontario can easily be a Conservative province but not with John Tory at the helm.

March 6, 2009 / 09:32

Fred, just so I'm clear.. do you still think that Tory would be a great leader and that the electorate of the three elections that Tory lost in are just out of touch with how talented this guy really is? Or is the reality that this guy doesn't have a clue what is important to people; he has horrible judgement and that despite how bad Dalton may be, John Tory would have failed as the Premier of this province. Defeating John Tory may not solve the current problems of Ontario but electing him would have crated a whole host of new problems to deal with!

Pauly Walnuts

Edyfelson has a point... if was he'd have proven it.

I like Tory, but he just can't get it done. He's the perfect example of a good guy but a bad politician.

On the other hand you have Mcguinty...Great politician... reponsible for nothing, nobody is better than him at deflecting blame and sucking out every last ounce of opportunity... but he's the scum of the earth.

Politics is a funny game. They pretend it's a business but's it's a service industry.
If I had a company I'd hire Tory but not McGuinty.

"Speyside Phil"
March 6, 2009 / 10:16

I give up on Politics. How anyone in their right mind could vote for someone who supports McGuinty is beyond me.So now we have McGuinty with a free reign for the next two years with no one in the legislature to hold him accountable. He has done nothing, will do nothing, while all hell goes to this province.
Obama is taking the road to socialism, Chavez is president for life, can things get any worse??

Once again, all you Liberal lunatics don't bother to read what Freddie is saying.
He admits Tory screwed up, he admits that the process sucked, all he's doing raising a valid point.
People voted out of spite and that can be dangerous.

Andrew
March 6, 2009 / 10:27

So Tory lost every time out of spite? Or did he lose because he is a bad motivator?

It is like those hopefulls on American Idol. They are told by their friends that they are great singers and should be famous. They audition and they are turned down. They blame the judges and that everyone else can't see how great they are. Truth is they can't sing.

Wayner
March 6, 2009 / 10:53

Interesting...McGuinty and the liberals fully expected to lose this by-election owing to their current record...does that mean the anger and spite of the kawartha's outweighed all the liberal mis-steps? Andrew, excellent analogy...

Horonymous
March 6, 2009 / 11:05

If John Tory would be effective for voters in opposition where is all the awesome effictive things the Federal Conservatives are doing for Canadians?

Remeber Harper last fall let us know the economy was OK and not an issue that warranted discussion as an election issue,

I'm sure the clear thinking unbiased right winged folks will set me straight.

Horonymous, what are the Federal Conservatives doing? Creating massive Liberal/NDP type budgets and deficits ... you should be thrilled.

Ya gotta admit, those guys in that area are very loyal to their hometown guys. I may be in the minority here, but nothing bothers me more than seeing someone come into an election and try to win a seat in a riding TO WHICH THEY'RE NOT A RESIDENT. Sorry, Fred, but while John Tory could have been a good choice, he wouldn't have been the right choice.

Pam
March 6, 2009 / 14:28

The more I think on this, the more I disagree with you Fred. Tory has been given enough political opportunities and squandered them all. There's no reason not to assume he'd screw up Haliburton as well. Secondly, his trying to hi-jack the riding stinks. And if the people of Haliburton want to vote in a liberal, that's their choice. Lastly, why do we even care what goes on in Haliburton...???

Argie
March 6, 2009 / 14:38

Pam,

You're right on the mark there.

IMO Tory was a little too progressive for me. Lets get a conservative PC as leader of the party. Frank Klees would not be bad choice.

Sounds pretty Toronto to me.
Centre of the universe and a big sense of entitlement.

Mr Nuts

Please provide examples of Mr Harper's efforts to make things better in Canada.

Since you believe he can walk on walk fixing the economy should be easy fro him an his Reform buddies.

Pauly Walnuts
March 6, 2009 / 16:00

Horonymous, he can't walk on water... and if you actually read whatI wrote, that's a complaint against Harper. I am dissatisfied with his decisions in case you need me to dumb it down.

Coming soon to a ballot box near you... "Tim Hudak: The McGuinty Grit-Slayer!"

If anyone can topple McSquinty and his do-nothing crowd, it will be Hudak, the MPP for Niagara-West Glanbrook, and current finance critic for the Tories.

RickyP

John Tory is a nice guy, but perhaps he is not suitable for politics. He has made a few major blunders in all of his platforms, and that is why he is is 0 for 3.

I wish him well, because he does seem more sincere and principaled than 99% of most of our current politicians (to be non-partisan I will provide as examples Mr Layton, Mr Rae, and Mr Flaherty).

Politics is a game, and Mr Tory appears unable to have what it takes to join in. That makes me respect him even more.

Oh Me Me
March 6, 2009 / 23:52

Here's how it looks from someone who actually lives in the riding and voted last night.

The last time we had some know-it-alls from Toronto show up and tell us how they were going to make things better here, we got an unwanted Mike Harris forced amalgamation rammed down our throats. This has resulted in an expensive, money wasting, unresponsive municipal Government. (We got named the "City of Kawartha Lakes", the only city in Ontario with a
higher population of cattle than humans) When we had a referendum to de amalgamate, the Conservatives, (and later the Liberals), told us, "No, we still know better than you hillbillies what is good for you." So Torontonians, please understand our distrust of your politicians.

The +$500,000 wasted last night and the $100,000 golden parachute for Laurie Scott would have made a start to replace the Fenelon Falls arena, revitalize the main street of Omemee, fix some of the worst roads in the province, or replace the bridge in Bobcaygeon which has been closed for over a year. Everyone I talked to is PO'd about the waste of money. We have lots of money for an election but no money to fix anything that matters to the people that live here.

Personally, I parked my protest vote with the Greens because I couldn't stand the alternatives. The Greens actually beat the increasing irrevelent NDP last night.

RickyP
March 7, 2009 / 00:09

Oh Me Me: Mike Harris was not from Toronto, he was from North Bay. He also caused the amalgamation of Toronto, so you are not the only area to suffer.

Perhaps you should direct your anger toward Queen's Park, not Toronto. We hate the bastards just as much as you do. They have done f*ck all for us too.

Right Uppercut
March 7, 2009 / 00:39

The best thing that could happen to Ontario would be for Mike Harris to come back and repair the damage the liberals have done!

At least with Harris; you knew where he stood.

No bullshit... just straight-ahead conservatism that promoted self-sufficiency, instead of sucking off the taxpayer's tit.

McWimpy tosses money at every left-wingnut special interest group to cling to power... how much did they give to some club in Toronto for being 'lie-beral' friendly, for example?

Shades of crooked-mouth Chretien and the sponsorship scam!

Mike from Lowville
March 7, 2009 / 09:30

Oh Me Me, bang on! Right Upper? Know where he stood? I wish I could stand him in the middle of the 407!! I'm going to see if I can find you a Mike Harris bobble head for you. You can put it on your dashboard and worship your messiah of Ontario!

Hey Lowville, re: your Harris comments... "Stop whining like a... school-teacher!"

Unlike most politicians, Harris said what he was going to do prior to being elected; and once he was... he DID what he said. Like it or not.
