Zack And Miri Make A Stinker

I was reading an article about film-maker Kevin Smith this week and it reminded me that I wanted to see his latest flick Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

I'll be honest, I'm a big fan of Kevin Smith the person, but I definitely don't count myself among his cult following who've grossly over-rated his films over the years.

Kevin Smith was a great friend of the Humble and Fred Show. No doubt about it.

Whenever he came to town he always made sure he sat in on the morning show for an hour or so. Of course I'm no naïve, I realize there was a lot of self-interest involved because the audience he was trying to reach was exactly the audience that Humble and I supplied him.

Just the same, he was a warm, compassionate and funny guy who was always welcome into the studio to share some great stories while promoting his movies and speaking engagements.

Anyway, I didn't' get the chance to see Zack and Miri at a movie theatre over the holidays, but I did get to see the DVD last night.

I got my hands on one just minutes after reading the Toronto Sun article where Smith complained about the film's lousy showing in theatres and he blamed lack of promotion.

It made about half of the 70 million dollars that was projected.

Smith claims The Weinstein Company let him down through their distribution and promotional methods and that's why the movie blew hogs at the box office.

I beg to differ.

I think the movie failed at the box office because it stinks. Like big piles of steamy shit.

I find it hard to believe that with Kevin Smith's cult overwhelming cult following, that this film would have failed if it was any good. All Smith fans have to do is hear this guy has a new piece of product and they flock like sheep to see it.

Not only that, but I would figure the so-called "naming controversey" would only make people see it even more. Having "porno" in the title didn't sit well in many parts of backwoods America.

Unfortunately in this case, the movie is so weak, so stupid, and so pointless I'm sure even his most passionate fans couldn't bring themselves to recommend it to anyone else.

I'm not going to get into a detailed film review here because I'm probably not capable of one, but I will say this.

Knowing what I do about Kevin Smith, I would suggest if anyone else made this goofy flick, he'd be the first to trash it.

I am a huge Kevin Smith fan but even I have to admit that it was probably one of his weakest films. I would rather watch Clerks 2 for a 24-hour marathon than watch this movie again.

While I agree that there were some really funny parts, I can count them on both hands and that's not good. Kevin was trying to mash his style with that of Judd Apatow's (40-year old virgin, Knocked Up) in this movie and it didnt work at all.

I wont be purchasing this movie on Blu Ray unless its about $10. But I have faith that Kevin Smith will be back in form soon enough. The guy is funny as shit, though.

Maybe he shouldn't blame it ALL on the marketing. I know you like him, Fred, but I saw Smith give the brush off to at least 50 of his fans outside Hotel Intercontinental during the Toronto Film Festival. He jumped out of an SUV and plowed through the very age group that is his bread and butter - shaking his head angrily and waving them off as an annoyance before disappearing into a revolving door. He all but gave them the finger.

Now, the Slumdog Millionaire kids were very accomodating, patiently signing autographs and chatting with their fans, as was the shy director Danny Boyle. I wonder what ever happened to THAT movie?

If the movie was a failure, I'd attribute it to the fact that Seth Rogen pretty much plays the same character in all his movies. He shows about as much depth as Nicholas Cage.

Hey Fred - The movie might have been a failure in the studio's eyes, but it was the highest grossing film Kevin Smith's done. His fans are definitely passionate, but I don't think there are as many of them as people think. His movies make money, for the most part, because they're done on the cheap and he sells a ton of DVD's.

Zack and Miri wasn't great, but then again it wasn't a View Askewniverse flick...

I saw Kevin Friday at RTH, he puts on a great show. 3 hours absolutely flew by, hilarious!

I watched zack and miri over the weekend...I laughed all the way through. It was well worth the $5.99 I paid to Rogers...of course if I had to drop $20+ at a theatre I might have had a different opinion...
