What Recession?

February 24, 2009 @ 18:10

Here's another reason professional sports sucks and it hits close to home. The Toronto Maple Leafs will raise ticket prices next season to the tune of 3.5 percent.

It doesn't sound like much, but any increase at this time shows that MLSE believes Leaf fans are not only loyal, but extremely stupid as well.

Can you imagine having the audacity to raise ticket prices when it's already been determined that you're not going to make the playoffs for the fourth season in a row?

Not only that, but given the current economic climate you'd think MLSE would show a little more class and hold off. The Leafs make huge profits and they pay their players millions of dollars, things the average sports fan can't relate to.

But that doesn't matter because it's all about gouging and greed.

The official statement from MLSE claims rising costs and inflation has forced them into this. They don't want to do it, but they just have to.

They also claim that over the past four years ticket prices have risen just one percent, but the obvious reply to that, is this. Why would ticket prices rise over the past four years, you've done nothing to justify it. You've delivered nothing but a shitty product.

And there's more.

Next season the NHL salary cap is expected to fall which plays right into the hands of the Maple Leafs. Once again, their revenues will go up while their costs go down, but they fail to mention this as they lay out their plans to increase the price of a ticket.

Listen, at the end of the day it's all up to fans, from the average guy sitting in the purples, to the rich bastards sitting in the platinums. Nothing is going to change until the you stop buying tickets and stop giving in to an organization that takes you for granted and gives you nothing in return.

I still can't believe it. We're in the midst of a super serious economic crisis, where virtually everyone is pulling back and doing without.

But not the Maple Leafs.

They're special?

Well, ya, the Maple Leafs are special. They're Canada's team. But there's no way in Hell that they should be raising ticket prices. This has been an interesting season but we knew going in that there wouldn't be much in return. And, likewise the Leafs shouldn't expect to see a return from the fans. However, there's a long historical precedent of supporting the franchise with nothing coming back from the on-ice product.

I couldn't give a rat's you know what about Leaf ticket prices anymore. I long gave up going to Leaf games as have most real fans. The Leafs have long given up on the average fan. It's the corporate goof balls that pay the piper and anyone else who's stupid enough to pay to watch garbage. When I was a kid I could actually save up my allowance and buy tickets to watch the Leafs, see good games and actually see them win Stanley Cups!!

Last year I was given tickets to see the Leafs. The tickets were $182 or $192 each - right behind the net. Talk about crappy over-priced seats. That stupid screen that's there to "protect" the brain-dead "fans" totally ruins the view when you're trying to see the play at the other end of the rink. Really, the people who pay that much money are totally nuts. On top of that most of the people around us were hardly watching the game. They were too busy talking to their rich buddies around them, getting up and down to go for food and drink or texting on their freakin phones. And don't get going about the price of beer.

So keep on raising the ticket prices. I'm happy to stay home with normal priced beer, watch the game on the tube and have the option of changing channels when the Leafs stink up the joint, and I won't feel ripped off doing it.

Don't forget to mention the hit the Ontario Teacher fund, Rogers and Thompson Media took this year as well.
Let's also look at the expansion to the ACC that MLS&E has just undertook. Just under Half Million Dollars just to install a outdoor video screen. No cost yet on how much it will cost to operate the thing.

This old story? Again? Fred hits the mark with:

"Listen, at the end of the day it's all up to fans, "

Until there is a consequence to their action (i.e. empty seats), why would the brain trust of MLSE do anything differently?

But then if there are empty seats, will they ponder the idea of moving the franchise elsewhere to a more lucrative market...?

The ticket price isn't (ever) coming back down, folks. Get used to it.

The Habs are Canada's team. The leafs tank nation is a GTA beast. The numbers speak for themselves.

As for the ticket price increases MLSE with its inferior product still have fans waiting for a chance to see better team come an play the leafs.

If Richard Peddie had to run a real business he wouldn't last a week. I will never go to another Leafs game.

Well I guess its a good thing that I can't get leaf tickets.
Living north in Sudbury, I have tried. No-way you can get them at the box office, or even on ticket master, because there sold out.
And sold-out to who I may ask?
The SCALPER! the guy on the street who will charge you 200% more than the ticket is worth.
So forget about working hard to buy a couple of tickets to take my son to see a team he loves and mabey sit in the White House, when I can't afford tickets in the Shit House!
Theres your greed my friends!

we aren't likely to see empty seats... people will still pay to see this crappy team and MLSE knows it... probably the only thing that would force them to clean up their act would be some competition... but we all know that MLSE & Bettman would never let another team moved into the GTA or Golden Horseshoe...

I sure they are told not to, but quite often you can see the empty seats on TV at the start of a period. Guess they don't miss much walking in late.

Geez Fred, couldn't figure out a way to dump on Sundin in this posting??

The Leafs are corporate only now... long past the times when a person could take the family to see a game.

What should you choose, a Leaf game or a family vacation?

I still have the ticket stubs from the mid 90's, box gold seats at Maple Leaf Gardens, only 3 rows behind the visitors bench with a face value of $45.00. How much are those seats today at the ACC? How much has inflation been in the last 15 years? It would appear that the Leafs have outpaced inflation by a few thousand percent.

If you want to see hockey live today, take the family to the local Junior A game. It's affordable and the talent is excellent.

Canada's team comes from Alberta.

Horonymous, I'm still waiting for that empirical data showing the Habs as Canada's team. :)

Traditionally, Montreal needed the rivalry with Toronto in order to establish itself outside of French-speaking Quebec.

Increase ticket prices for a shity product! And guess what? Fans will still fill the seats at the ACC!
STOP GOING!

Go tank nation.

LEW

This really has nothing to do with the Leafs, to me it is about hockey supporting cities having to raise prices so we can subsidize teams placed in non-hockey environments, meanwhile there are at least two cities in Canada that deserve teams. Please take a look at Phoenix – a young exciting team, making a strong playoff run, with the greatest icon in hockey at the helm; and they are dropping ticket prices, just to get people in the seats!
So our money goes to fund a watered down product in non hockey markets to artificially inflate the value of a franchise; until going to a hockey game stops being a social event for the privileged instead of a game played for FANS of the game, nothing will change. It’s nice to see how Bettman won’t let this recession ruin his party.
Like Ball says - go to see a Junior A game, great hockey at an affordable price - can't beat that

I hear you can get a ticket for the Florida teams, parking and popcorn and still take your parrot for $20.
WE, Canada, have how many cities that would fill an arena?
Hamilton, Winnipeg, Regina, Nova Scotia, Windsor, London, Halifax, Kitchener, Quebec City, Sudbury and even Peterborough.
Paid seats with people that would drink gallons of watered down beer and buy Maple Leaf weiners...oops.
hmmmm Maple Leaf...neither doing so great.
