Habs Watch

February 16, 2009 @ 09:34

The Montreal Canadiens got back to their losing ways last night with a 4-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks.

Even though it's the new home of the Mats Sundin, you've got to love the Canucks and the way they dominate the Habs. Vancouver has now gone 11 straight games without losing to Montreal . 10-0-1.

That's right; the streak stretches way back to when the NHL still had ties.

Let's add it all up. The Canadiens have now lost seven of their last eight road games, four of their last five, three of four on the current road trip and seven of their last ten over-all.

As for their plunge out of the playoffs, it's getting so juicy I can't stand it.

The Habs remain fifth in the Eastern Conference, but they're tied with the Rangers, just two points up on Buffalo and Florida. Look at it this way; the Habs are just one loss away from eighth place in the east.

The playoff situation shapes up like this, Carolina sits in ninth place just five back of the Habs, and Pittsburgh is seven back, however, the Penguins did the expected yesterday and fired coach Michel Therrien which means they'll probably surge much like the Ottawa Senators have after firing their coach.

Montreal plays in Pittsburgh on Thursday, but first they'll suffer the embarrassment of losing in Washington on Wednesday.

Habs still winless in Vancouver

As much as I'd like to say the Leafs looked good in periods 2 and 3 Sat , I'd have to say the Penguins looks like Montreal...very disinterested in playing hockey.
Unfortunately the coach had to go. Strange that teams with 2 or more superstars that each and every team would love to have are not doing well. Ottawa, Tampa and Pittsburg.

Habs play wednesday, not tuesday. Gainey will make a deal soon..this team looks terrible. The only good news is they play most of their remaining schedule at home...and they have a excellent home record.

Jake brings up a great point - all 3 teams have had high picks for the past few years, add in the NY Islanders??? Fred, are you sure you want the Leafs to keep losing, or would you prefer to build a strong organization like NJ or Detroit - consistant winners with mid to low picks??

As much as I like seeing the Habs going down, I think they'll make it into the playoffs but they'll be gone quickly and quietly from the first round. They didn't look very good last night in Vancouver.

Good point Lew. Geez these kids are 18 when picked....by the time they are 22 they may show something.
Both Detroit and NJ spend on defense. Both have done well this yr with goalies considered so-so. And in NJ a Leaf minor league castoff.

Pogge's back. Sources tells me he has quite the attitude.
Not bad for a minor league goalie.
But his press clippings have said he's the next one.
Hope it's not based on one nifty Jim Benning pass. Hopefully we are past them days,

Hoeveel kan ik lenen? (hypotheek). Wat worden mijn maandlasten? (hypotheek) ... Hoeveel hypotheek heb ik nodig? Hoe hoog is de boete die ik nu zou moeten

I saw a news item regarding this on TV last night. Thanks for covering it in greater depth
