Booooo

February 18, 2009 @ 12:03

Damien Cox wrote an interesting piece in today's Toronto Star about the return of Mats Sundin on Saturday.

Cox chastises Leaf fans for their treatment of other former players who've returned to Toronto and he thinks there's no place for it when the Vancouver Canucks are at the ACC on Saturday night. The former captain should not be booed.

Why not? What's the big deal?

Even though I'm guilty of it from time to time, hero worship of sports stars is something that bothers me. They just aren't worth it.

Cox argues that Sundin meant far too much to the Leafs and on Saturday night, they shouldn't boo the guy, on the contrary, they should give him a standing ovation.

Why?

Let's wrestle this back to reality and call it for what it is. It's only a hockey game and Mats Sundin is only a hockey player.

If the fans that've paid hundreds of dollars for the privilege of watching the game prefer to forget about he did for the Leafs, and remember what he failed to do at the trading deadline last spring, then fine, boo the big fella.

It's no big deal. It's a man playing a kid's game and the very fact that we flock in huge numbers and pay gigantic bucks to watch it happen says everything.

It's silly, it's goofy, and it's shameful.

Booing just adds to the mix.

Hockey is amazing on a hi def 40 inch TV.
No expensive seats. Better food. Cooler beer.
No tight seats. No fools walking back and forth spilling beer. No one licking my seat from behind...a curse I seem to have following me.
No bleach blondes acting like they are hot stuff.
Get to see Don Cherry...although he doesn't say much he's still entertaining and always honours our troops.
Plus the new hockey anthem is---well---dull...but TSN has the old exciting one.
Sportsnet has the exciting Joe Bowen calling games.
And I can boo all I want....lol

Mr. Cox is a very tiresome sports writer who should move on to a new city and ply his schlock elsewhere. I have read his tripe for many years and after a while it starts to repeat its content, only the names change but the message is the same.
Toronto sux we get it already.
Now go away Damien, your home town of Hamilton needs you.

Weird living here in Vancouver... Being a Leafs fan first...and Sundin playing for the Canucks. I don't know if i should boo, cheer, get a beer, or weep. Unfortunately the fans will more than likely be boing the leafs by the third.

If I get paid $11 million like Sundin does, they can boo me all they want. Even more so considering the millions he made from those filled seats in Toronto.

The only reason I'd go to the ACC was if someone was licking my seat from behind... in particularly one of thoese "bleach blondes acting like they are hot stuff".

Hey Neil - live here through a cup run and then try NOT to be a Nucks fan. I lived in the West End in '94 and it was nuts. Remember you asked the question - what was the worst disaster of the 90's? What was the number one response? Losing game 7, which got to the point where you sounded like you were fed up with the calls.
GO Canucks GO

I laughed out loud at that one.

First of all, Cox is very good at what he does. His opinions are always thought out, and can be convincing.

This time I disagree with him. Sundin was a classy guy for years, but...he chose to "F" the team and the fans on the way out. Who knows what was going on behind the scenes, he may have very well been justified. But forever he and the Muskoka 5 will be remembered for how they chose to stick to their guns rather than move on.

I won't start off by making the comment that I just knew sundin's return would result in a freddie put down like always...oops! Shoot. I just posted that, well since its out there.
I love freddie and only his constant over the years hate on for sundin irritated me. We can all have different opinions of the guy on how he did or did not influence the players around him.
So I can validly judge him on stats alone.
He produced. He produced year after yr and presented a positive face for the team while taking all criticism for their failures. When the team surrounded him in most years, not all, but most years with crap. He still walked up to the microphones and acted as the face of the team and handled criticism that really should have gone to the GM's or to the teachers pension reps for such a shoddy product.

He could not play every position on the ice at all times at all games. He played centre, he scored a ton, he fought thru severe injuries to play....and in the end when he felt that the team that screwed him with crap linemates wanted him to give something up to go elsewhere at season trade deadline..he decided not to. Why? Likely not because he wanted to mess with them, but more likely he is getting close to retirement and wanted to consider retiring as a leaf without going elsewhere.

Like his affect on fellow players or not, like his decision to use his no trade or not, did the guy produce on a consistent basis lots of points and the answer is yes.

Classy and never one to comment on the organization negatively even after joining the canucks...i for one will raise a beer in salute on saturday nite.
With the leafs in such bad shape i am torn between wanting them to hold him pointless...or him having a career nite.
either way, cheers mats.
ps still love you freddie...in a manly way

Hey Shark, well said. Unfortunately Fred can't see beyond his extreme hate for Sundin. Fred why don't you tell us what is really behind your hate for the man????

It might have something to do with Sundin screwing the very people who will give him a standing O on Saturday night.
As Fred says, the hero worship is sickening... and blind.

Don Cherry is like all the soothsayers that predited 20 things the past yr...but they made 1000 predictions.
Old DC always says : I said that before....blah blah....

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
