Under Pressure

January 20, 2009 @ 08:20

A couple of weeks ago I was watching the Fox News channel and they interviewed several black people in New Orleans and the question was simple.

What does an Obama Presidency mean to you?

The answers were frightening. For tens of thousands in New Orleans, where life still isn't back to normal for poor people after the floods, Obama offers hope, but it's a false hope.

There are those in New Orleans, and apparently millions across the rest of the USA who think this man is going to perform miracles.

Based on the run up to his election, and the unrealistic expectations placed upon him, there are people in the United States who feel their lives are going to change dramatically starting today.

Some of the responses in New Orleans were mind numbing. Some feel having Obama as President will mean jobs and homes and prosperity almost instantly.

The African American President will be expected to change the lives of African American citizens simply because he's African American.

Unfortunately, the poor and uneducated in the United States, which by the way includes all races, expect the most of the new President but they don't seem to know how the system really works.

They've either been shutout of the process or they gave up on it long ago.

But now that some of that hope as returned it means punishing pressure for Obama. Even if he was able to accomplish half of what's expected of the man, he would still come up terribly short in the eyes of those who are going to depend on him the most.

It's not Obama's fault.

As someone running for President, he's got to deliver a message of hope and change, but it applies to all Americans in general. The problem is, it's been received by America's most vulnerable in a twisted way.

They feel because of Obama's race and the nonstop comparison to Martin Luther King, the message of hope and change is directed at them in particular.

Barack Obama inherits a country that's in woeful debt because it's currently fighting two wars in a world that's experiencing a severe economic downturn.

People are losing jobs and homes and assets at an alarming rate and that has to be his first priority.

Last night while watching CNN there was a panel of prominent black Americans that including Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, it also included a black activist University Professor whose name I honestly didn't catch.

They were talking about what the Obama Presidency will mean to African Americans and the Professor's response was startling,

Not only does he expect Obama to put the welfare of African Americans at the top of his list, he claims all the "brothers and sisters" will hold him accountable.

In other words, black America could be the first segment to actually turn on Obama.

Changing the plight of black America to the extent so many black Americans expect him to, is totally unrealistic.

After all, a President can only serve two terms.

President Obama opens up the drawer in the former president Bush's desk and reads the note left to him.
Mr. Obama, look to your left and you will see a closet. Open the door to that closet and out will come a man I have gone to for all of my decisions over the past eight years. Mr. Ross Perrot will be of great help to you....

People are expecting a lot from Obama. But he alone cannot make people be responsible for their actions. From violence, fathering children out of wedlock, multi-generation families caught in welfare with no motivation to do better. People are hoping he can walk on water.. but he can't.

Andrew Young who worked with Martin Luther King was very reserved when interviewed.
He has hope too but after years of experience he knows change doesn't happen quickly or easily.

Hope is a good thing.
BUT no one should expect frrebies --- unless you're AIG and the others that got billions.
War, Debt, Unemployment.
George Bush did well for the old boys of Texas but for all others he wasn't what most would call a good President.
Now with oil prices low I'm sure the old boys aren't too happy.

I'm waiting for the "news" stories to start in a few months about why hasn't he done anything yet, what's taking so long, etc.
Change doesn't happen over night people! I hope Obama puts the US back on track. Might take 4 to 8 years!

Ross Perot still around????

Argie
January 20, 2009 / 14:23

Change.......that's what Obama is supposed to be bringing to the US.

I hope he can but I really doubt it.

Can he change the following in the US? The disproportionate amount of crime, murder specifically, unwanted teenage pregnancy, AIDS, drug addiction and domestic abuse all within the American black community....

If he can change all of this, then he truly is the second coming of Christ. Like I said, I doubt it.

Can we let the guy get in office first???

Geeez!!

January 20, 2009 / 16:11

Your story reminds me of what the Religious Right expected of GWB when he took office - There was another group (NeoCons) that had high hopes that they had a guy that would go back into Iraq.
That office comes with so much expectations from so many doesn't it.
Two important things Fred:
1) the black vote did not turn the tide like the Religious Right did for Bush
2) I've yet to hear Obama say anything other than the Black community needs to work harder to change itself.

I expected as much from the frequent bloggers here. So negative towards anyone who may be a little left than center, but there's hope, "and apparently millions across the rest of the USA who think this man is going to perform miracles." Why not! People put their faith in a lot lesser things! "People are hoping he can walk on water.. but he can't." Well, at least he will not walk into doors, bastardize the English language, or be a bumbling puppet! Argie, did you have tears in your eyes watching the biggest azzhole ever in the Oval office, leave with that signature smirk!!

Thankfully, we only have to wait four years (less one day) until Jeb Bush takes the oath of office, Lowville.

And Sarah Palin is sworn in as Secretary of State!

January 20, 2009 / 22:56

Holy crap. Who's being negative? People are only saying that the expectations are overwhelmingly high and unrealistic. Obama is a refreshing change from Bush, and he hasn't even taken office yet. But the way everyone has been talking, he's being set up to fail, regardless of advancements he's sure to achieve.

" the way everyone has been talking, he's being set up to fail, regardless of advancements he's sure to achieve."

Funny, some were saying the same thing here about Harper a few months ago.....weeks ago....days ago...

January 21, 2009 / 00:13

Mike from Lowville, what do you want us to say??

Allmost all of us are saying that the expectations of many people are way too high and disappointment is always sure to follow.

What's wrong with that? We are not questioning Obama's drive and sincerity but you should be smart enough to figure that out.

The thing about Fred's blog entry is that he wants us to know that he watches CNN as well as Fox. I suspect he put the CNN bit in just to show us that he is broad minded enough to watch and absorb all sides of the political spectrum. As though CNN is radically left, because you know that the whole of the media is a "lib-left"* conspiracy. (Trademark Lubor Zink/ Toronto Sun circa 1978). Thanks for the laughs!

So, he's now in office.

Since then, the Dow has dropped 300 points and gas prices have risen 4 cents in my town (after going nowhere but down for the last 5 months)
Layoffs are still occurring, stores are still closing, crime still exists, many people are still poor and most of the world still hates the U.S.

Where are the sunshine and rainbows we were promised?

(pauses and wonders how long it will take before the first person writes that it's GWB's fault.)

Obama is largely powerless to stop it though; if he had said he opposed it, many in NYC, especially in Manhattan (the opposition is primarily in the outer boroughs) would have seen it as an unwanted intrusion into local issues.

Who ever imagined the thought building a mosque at ground zero was in fact wise? I am not much of a great fan of either Glen Beck or Sarah Palin yet , when compared to Obama and his supremely stupid governing administration, these two are prodigies, get real America, there is some unusual stuff going on. I think President obama is wasting his time refuting Ahmadinejad for the reason that a large amount of American’s seemed to be lumping Ahmadinejad mutually in to the same grouping with Barak—though if Obama is going to be believed, and who knows in this instance, I assume now is the one instance in which Barack obama won’t blame Bush.

Stupid can be as stupid does...this event is a joke. Lindsay Lohan goes onto do illegal drugs for the reason that the woman wouldn't "get it"...The entire court program is a faiytale. Why don'tyou put her in some jail in Cincinnati or someplace else in Ohio where there's no overcrowding and there is no ignorant system that usually helps individuals get away with ****. At the very least if she is likely to persist to do substances she needs to be "smart" about it instead of get caught...or else, keep going with what you are doing Lindsay and let's drop you inside Afghanistan with unbelievably brave soldiers who are losing their lives daily to give you your ignorant so-called "independence".

I do know. It is actually genuinely difficult to know the difference between each of them. Both are America haters, hell bent on its wrecking. The two of them criticize The united states and Us citizens incessantly. This is a hint, Barak is the one undoubtedly being successful in doing damage to America.

I think the main cause for the apparent growing sense of anger, hopelessness and despair among those who are dealing with this issue is that the long term unemployed are not a unified voting force. In fact, We are made up of a complete mixture of the whole working class. This recession didn't simply impact blue collar or white collar workers. Both Republicans and Democrats have each been hit hard. It pretty much equally effected us all.

I've just looked up the statistics, and it turns out that 50 million Americans suffer from some form of tinnitus. Not that I want to breathe a sigh of relief, but it's good to know that the condition isn't something incredibly rare that doctors won't know where to begin when it comes to treatment. It was also good to know that you can 'hear noises in your head' and not be crazy.Read more...
