Getting rid of fighting isn't the answer Freddie, what they need to do is get rid of the damn instigator rule and restore the purpose of fighting again. Marty McSorley may have been the last of the non instigator fighters. Now unless another guy is ready to square off against you you are going to get that instigator and most of the time they are planned fights just because everyone in the arena is bored as hell with the 2-1 score and lack of offense, they figure they would rather see two dumb asses beat the shit out of eachother.
Take the instigator rule out so the enforcer has a job again so that if someone takes liberties with Sidney Crosby, they will have their heads handed to them.
Fighting belongs, the rules need to be changed to have it make sense again.

The issue has been debated by hockey experts and people like Don Cherry too for years.
Most fights are waltzes. They waste time and energy.
More stick work if fighting is banned? Not with those delicate feather weighted peashooters.
How many young kids can skate rings around TieDomi, Georges Laraque etc and never get a chance to do so?
The Big Bad Flyers of the 70's were 'bad', not because of fighting[yes in part], but because they hit everything that moved.

Fighting in hockey should not be an issue. It's part of the game. Some would say a very entertaining part of the game. What happened with that young man passing is a tragedy, but it's an isolated incident. How many hockey fights have there been in the history of the game and how many people have died. I'm willing to bet ten times more people die each year from getting hit by lightning. The fact is, when you are on skates, you would be lucky to get half your power into a punch...you can't properly balance yourself. If anything, helmets should HAVE to stay on during a fight, that'll protect your noggin if you drop. But if you do that, visors should be banned in pro hockey or if you fight with a visor on, you get an extra couple games to think about how much of a wimp you are.

Wasn't there a form of comedy called 'slapstick'. Ideal for hockey.

As someone who got poked in the eye with a hockey stick I'll always wear a visor.
Fortunately my eye was ok but the only thing that saved it was my big beak.
