Nice One Georgie

January 25, 2009 @ 16:05

Last night I was over at Neighbour John's watching the NHL Skills Competition and there was still some Bud Lite left in my bottle when it ended.

So we sat there long enough for the beginning of George Stroumboulopoulos' Montreal Canadiens Special, 100 Years, 100 Stars.

Leave it to George, it was fabulous.

I'll be honest, I don't have a lot of time for stuff about the Habs because I've had it stuffed down my throat too much over the past four decades.

I'm well aware of how many stars they've developed and how many Stanley Cups they've won.

Usually when a Hab fan starts to spout off about the Canadiens, I like to leave the room.

But last night was different. Strombo did a great job of mixing history with pop culture and presenting a unique one hour special.

It wasn't your typical sports history show with tons of archived crap they've we've seen a million times before. Instead it was a mixture of interviews with Canadiens past and present and interviews with such stars such as Dan Aykroyd, Sam Roberts and Jason Priestly.

Strombo brought hockey, music, culture and language together in a superb piece of television.

He made the point a few times during the show that even if you were a die hard Hab hater, you still have to respect their history.

He's right.

Hopefully the CBC will be showing it again.

Well put Fred. Something nice to say about the CBC and the Canadiens.

The CBC should do more shows like this. I'm not really a huge sports fan but it was interesting and engaging Television. I'd love to too see a documentary on the leafs and some of Canada's other sports teams.
As opposed to something the sports channels would do the CBC didn't produce some cliché "rah rah" "110%" "no I in team" documentary.

Being from Montreal but now happy to live in the GTA. I would love the leafs to bring to my home town the Stanley Cup.

The only thing more irritating than a Habs fan is Georgie Strombo himself.

Firstly you have his obvious lisp which is kind of strange considering he's a host of TV show. Don't they screen for people with speech impediments?

Along with that, his over gushing of any person he interviews irritate me beyond belief.

Outside of that, congrats to the Habs on their 100 years - may you never win another game.

Sal

Good program. George just loves himself just a little too much.

Mike from Lowville
January 25, 2009 / 23:26

Fred, you almost made me well up a tear when I read your entry. You see, I'm not that wrong, all the time. I'm glad you could look past all the hate and feel proud of our hockey history here in Canada. One hundred years of history and counting. All teams and players, past and present! Glow.....we deserve it!

Argie? You are a real lost soul aren't you? Eh?

IanS
January 26, 2009 / 08:05

I only caught a few minutes of the Habs show, but I've seen George in a few other things. He has got to be the worst host/interviewer living or dead.

As Argie and Sal said, he's full of himself and gushes all over his guests. There's zero follow-up questions from anything they've said. He interupts their answers. He's bouncing around like he has ADD.

Too long on over production and too short on talent.

January 26, 2009 / 09:48

Wow Fred praising a CBC production. Zoot Alors!!!

Strombo's an akk round good guy.

Argie shameful comments.

Leave him alone

Argie
January 26, 2009 / 11:09

Sorry bingham for speaking ill of your boy. I feel shame......

And Mike from L, don't ever change, you keep me in stitches.

January 26, 2009 / 11:30

I did not see the Habs thing but I like George. He has the only compelling show still on CFNY. Sundays 4-7 I think. full of himself? Maybe, I don't watch much television so I've never watched the hour but I've always liked his radio personaity.

Sammi
January 26, 2009 / 15:13

It was a great special. Strombo did do a great job...but, man does he love himself.

January 26, 2009 / 17:13

Sal - You couldn't be any further from the truth. Period.

neil morrison
January 26, 2009 / 17:18

Sammi - I'll presume you're not the guy we used to call'Lunch Boy' back in the edge days of the 1990's. He wasn't that stupid and he didin't hide behind the internet.....ever. This talk of George 'lovig himself' makes me laugh. Out loud. LOL! Trust me, having worked at cfny from 1988 until 2004, there is ahsit load of people who absolutely LOVED themselves in that period of time. Interestingly enough, the biggest 'celebs' from 1988 til 2004 - Sheppard, Dani, Deadly Headly, George, and our best buddy Freddie P - they were the best to work with and had the smallest ego's. My two cents.

Jake
January 27, 2009 / 09:56

Everyone in media has a big EGO.

Sammi
January 27, 2009 / 10:55

Thanks Neil for confirming what Jake wrote....all you media guys have big egos and you are all in love with each other and yourselves. You always pat each other on the back and tell each other how wonderful you all are.

The blog here is for people to write comments and opinions...how is that hiding behind the internet??? If that's the case....get rid of this blog then. What a stupid comment.

Argie
January 27, 2009 / 11:26

Sammi - I agree with you 100%.

Why is it when someone posts a comment about a radio or TV personality, certain members of that fraternity feel the need to jump in and insult the person who has given an opinion? The main purpose of a blog is to provide everyone a vehicle in which to state their opinion on a wide range of topics - including geeky, lisping, trying to hard TV hosts. Is it not?

Jake
January 27, 2009 / 11:51

I have no problems with big egos just as Jerry S had no problem with gays.
Athletes, boses, media sorts, all have inflated egos. Look at the athlete who doesn't give reporters a break during their career but once out of the limelight try to get as much ink as possible.

Andrew
January 27, 2009 / 12:17

Argie and Sammi:

Why do you feel the need to take offense? You made comments about George and someone else came in and offered a different opinion (and actual informed opinion). You insulted George pretty harshly Argie. If you can't take someone responding to you; don't make the post.

James Edgar
January 27, 2009 / 12:25

Argie
Actually the purpose of a blog is to provide the author a vehicle in which to state there opinion. The fact that most allow others to comment is just gravy for us. If you are so intent on giving your opinion and insulting people while doing it why don't you start a Blog? Posting comments is not a right like say freedom of religion. It is a privledge.

Argie
January 27, 2009 / 12:33

James and Andrew: Fair enough, my comments were a tad harsh of Georgie but its no different than Fred giving his opinions on Ben Mulroney, Dalton McGuinty, Jack Lawton, et al.

I'm not a fan of those people either but if we all subscribed to the theory that "if you can't anything nice about someone, don't say anything" then this blog and others would be quite boring. IMHO, that is.

Andrew
January 27, 2009 / 13:39

I am not saying your comments should not have been written. All I am saying is that if you write them, then be prepared for someone to come back with another opinion.

Say what you want but don't complain when someone fights back.

Man, I wish Jack Layton would respond to Fred's posts. But it would be hard for Jack to defend his own stupidity.

neil morrison
January 27, 2009 / 17:53

It's really this simple, If someone picks on my friend, I stand up for them. Too bad some people won't do the same. Call it my 'big ' ego, I guess.

Sid
January 27, 2009 / 19:00

Hey, blogging is a lot easier than some loudmouth barking his opinion at you like it is the only one that can exist.
Amen.

Horace
January 27, 2009 / 19:03

CBC has some good stuff. Hockey. News. Passionate Eye.
Sunday reports with Soloman and McNeil. Plus other things.

IanS
January 28, 2009 / 12:00

Neil, I'm sure George can stick up for himself. Obviously, you can offer your opinion, but don't be surprised if people don't hold George in as high esteem as you do. Not being a part of the "brotherhood" I look at his on air ability and say there are much better people who have done the job. He's no Brian Linehan.

Pauly Walnuts
January 28, 2009 / 20:45

Just like Canadian to shit on our own eh?

You dont' have to like him but he's accomplished alot and he did it at home and on his own terms. Case in point that he didn't whore himself out by shortening his Greek Surname when he was pressured to.

IanS
January 29, 2009 / 08:54

Nothing to do with shitting on our own. Being Canadian doesn't give him a bye to greatness. George's style isn't for me and I find it distracting and detracts from his interviews. I don't know about him on a personal level and I'm not commenting on that aspect. His on-air personality and methods leave much to be desired, and for that reason I tend to turn the channel when he's on. He may do a great job with something that scripted, like the Habs feature, but when left to his own devices he comes upshort.

Roshan
January 31, 2009 / 14:15

I've been a fan of Strombo for a little over 18 months now, watching his stuff on Youtube. I must say that I like his show and his style and I'm gonna watch the Canadiens special. And I am surprised that Fred P is actually saying something nice about the Habs? But don't ever change Freddie - your blog is one of the most interesting ones out there. Peace!

Karolyn Practices Online Meditation
July 29, 2010 / 19:29

When you hold a famous person the likes of Lindsay Lohan, in jail it's a monumental problem for the penitentiary officers, they don't want that. They're suffering a lot of press and stress on their detainment facility. It gets all the other inmates provoked, it's not a good place. Due to that, they're going to want to get her out quickly without looking like she's experiencing extraordinaire treatment. At least that's what they say. Don't make me laugh! Bear in mind, Lindsay had a 90-day jail conviction, the general individual with that conviction in Los Angeles would be required to do at least 22 or 23 days. But for Lindsay, now they're alleging two weeks total, so definitely she'd be getting it better than the rest. Just goes to show get famous get away with anything. Just ask OJ!!
