"Sorry, but that's the way I look at it."
Why are you apologizing? You are right to say that about these idiots. I can't possibly imagine what they are thinking. They are a bunch of selfish jerks who think they are much more important than they actually are.
January 21, 2009 / 10:04
It is way past the time for action from the liar McGuinty. Where has he been through all of this. If this was Mike Harris he would be burned on the cross, but somehow the Liberals always get a free ride.
January 21, 2009 / 10:04
I find it amazing that teachers can use the same old excuses "WE Care About The Students", then turn around and pull this crap. They have no form of regulations as far as performance is concerned,ie; are they good teachers.I Guess when you have tenure you can thumb your nose at anyone and demand the sky. If I were a student at York I would be looking at a class action law suite against the teachers and the union. If I were on the board negotiating with these malcontents I would fire them all and start over.....Steve
January 21, 2009 / 10:05
I work for the Fed Gov't and we were offered 2.3 1.5 1.5 1.5 over 4 yrs. We'll vote on it and it should be accepted.
But we have the past experience of 2 strikes that we got about the same amount after being sold out by the Union Prez at that time.
That was the times for good raises and it didn't happen. Now is not a good time to be on strike.
January 21, 2009 / 10:05
When are the unions going to get with the times? Do these folks expect sympathy? Here in Ottawa the Oc Transpo bus drivers are on strike over the "right" to choose their own schedule...seriously!
People without the luxury of owning a car are suffering and they continue to hold out ...hard to believe in these economic times. I'd be ashamed to be a union member on strike when people are losing their jobs or no raise or having their pay cut.
January 21, 2009 / 10:50
I said it before and I will say it again....It's time to abolish unions. Period.
January 21, 2009 / 11:35
There won't be any movement from McGuinty on this. He let the U of Windsor strike carry on even when it looked like the students would lose their term. McGuinty won't do anything which amounts to what's he's done since taking office.
January 21, 2009 / 12:42
It's time for "ALL" unions to "FUCK OFF" into the sunset....
January 21, 2009 / 12:48
The Liberals plan for universal child care, now wouldn't Sid Ryan love to get hold of those workers.
He could screw over every parent, say, just about the end of a school year.
Thank goodness The Liberals only talked about it for the 12 years in power and funny, never had time to get around to it.
January 21, 2009 / 12:51
Is there any wonder??? Look who is head of CUPE, no other than whack job, Syd Ryan.
Unfortunately,York University will end up paying the price. Student enrollment is already down by around 15 %. The only kids who end up going there are the ones with low marks who aren't accepted by any other university.
January 21, 2009 / 13:40
Abbreviated Summary of our Bargaining Demands
WAGES - The employer is offering us a three year deal with salary increases of 3%, 3.25%, and 3%.
According to Statistics Canada, the cost of living from August 2007-August 2008 rose 3.7% in Toronto. Effectively, this means that our real earnings have been eroded.
Given the current economic context, we demand a wage increase AND a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) in our agreement so that every year our wages adjust to the cost of living!
Our total funding for TAs, GAs and RAs from wages, grant-in-aid, and summer minimum guarantee should not fall below the poverty line as defined by the Low Income Cut Off (LICO) rate – at the current rate, for a single person living in Toronto, this figure is $22,653.
LENGTH OF AGREEMENT - We want a 2-year Collective Agreement that would expire in 2010 so that we can join the other unions at Ontario Universities in coordinated bargaining.
JOB SECURITY - Many of our members have been teaching at York for fifteen to twenty years without any guarantee of work from year to year. We demand:
A guaranteed complement of jobs every year for unit 2.
That unit 2 members with at least 5 years of service receive guaranteed work.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND EMPLOYEE RESOURCES
Our membership increased rapidly in recent years and with expected future growth, but our funds have remained the same. We demand that all of our funds be indexed to the beginning of the membership growth, that specific funds be increased where necessary, and that new funds be created to cover the cost of applying for permanent residence and to help international students who are ineligible for domestic funding.
Smaller class sizes, a commitment to employment equity, and higher standards for determining unsafe work to create a more safe and sound classroom and community environment; our working conditions are students’ learning conditions!
Whistle-blower protection, especially for the sciences, and an end to the Student Code of Conduct
Better health, dental, and vision care; coverage for retirees; and expanded extended health benefits
A fund to completely cover childcare expenses, sufficient on-campus daycare spaces to meet demand, choice in choosing daycares, better leave provisions, and access to breastfeeding and diaper changing rooms on campus.
TUITION
Tuition fees are user fees for public goods. This year CUPE Ontario passed a number of resolutions calling for the elimination of all tuition and ancillary fees. These fees have gone up drastically in the last decade. Up until 1994 York University used to have post-residency fees. This was in recognition of the fact that after graduate students stop taking course work they draw significantly less on the resources of the University.
January 21, 2009 / 14:16
Cost off living went up 3.7%. My salary went up 0%. The only COLA I've ever had is Coke or Pepsi. I live with that.
I have been working with the same non-profit employer for five years. Each year is a one year contract. If we meet our targets, our contract is renewed. I live with that.
Our workforce has decreased and as a result my job load has increased. I live with that.
It is not only the students who are sufferring. Think about the parents of some students who contribute to thei tuition, especially the ones who have lost jobs during this recession.
McGuinty is a lame piece of s*%t for not having intervened the minute these union jerks walked off the job. At this point back to work legislation is as useless as two tits on a bull. Like a previous poster said - fire the entire bunch and start all over. Where' Ronald Regan when we need him. Oh he's dead, just like the brains of unionists.
January 21, 2009 / 14:27
I've said it before. WHAT makes these union types think they're more important than the rest of us? They strike because they can. They are greedy, irresponsible layabouts, and my only hope is that somehow this will all come back and bite them in their f*t, lazy a*ses.
January 21, 2009 / 14:40
After reading this by Sid, I say let them rot.
January 21, 2009 / 15:03
If this is indeed Syd Ryan and what you wrote is your stance....it is f!cking ubelievable how out to lunch you are. I will vote for any political party that will ban unions. This is ridiculous.
Our compnay capped increases at 2%. And cost of living is not 3.7% it is actually below 2%.
January 21, 2009 / 15:18
I'm sure the 3.7% back in August included $1.50 a litre gasoline.
Checking Syds' list of wants and gimmes, I think he forgot wide screen TV?
January 21, 2009 / 15:24
I have a good friend who goes to york as mature student. This strike is costing her and her 4 year old daughter major hardship. Thanks Sid you moron.
January 21, 2009 / 15:31
As a Fed Gov't employee there's pros and cons to Unions. We negotiate when the gov't allows us to. Our 'contract' is 18 months expired. The PSAC is always available to talk. tHE tREASURY bOARD---no!!!!
I've been involved in 3 strikes that amounted to a small increase in 2 and 0 in one. Plus 8 yrs of no increases which would have been fine if the gov't had decreased it's deficit...big deal eh....so that affects my pension. By $7000 a yr.
At least I have a job?...heard that too many times.
Ottawa buses, York U...I feel for all affected. What led up to it? More to the story than just being on strike. Newspapers...hahaha.
January 21, 2009 / 15:36
What's a whistle blower. Rat?
January 21, 2009 / 16:11
Sid - isn't the phrase "bargaining demands" an oxymoron? But I digress,,,
What really bugs me about unions is that they inspire such ugly words, like "proletariat", "Marxism", "communist manifesto" and of course, "strike".
It's hardly surprising that a time when many of us do our part by taking pay cuts or reducing our work hours, Sid and the boys won't budge. Unions are toxic, as are the political parties that support them.
My heart goes out to the affected students, not to the greedy, NDP-loving philistines of CUPE.
January 21, 2009 / 16:15
Nick,
I'm a Federal employee as well. Didn't you have to take a literacy test before you got hired (or at least some sort of competency test).
Your rant doesn't do a brother justice.
Take a breath, clear your head and try to make a valid contibution to the discussion.
January 21, 2009 / 16:22
The enrollment rates at York are already dropping for next year, looks good on them when the students attend UfT or other universities...bye bye York.
January 21, 2009 / 17:35
Nigel
You must be at 4900.
So what's your view of the PSAC?
January 21, 2009 / 17:37
Unions were supposed to be like condoms.
January 21, 2009 / 17:55
True, unions are not needed because all companies and corporations treat their workers with respect. Not all union members are like these academics or auto workers who take home hefty pay cheques and benefits.
January 21, 2009 / 20:04
The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty stands behind the striking CUPE 3903 works until the bitter end, just as you have supported us morally and financially for more than a decade.
And if the province were to force back to work legislation I hope CUPE 3903 would not follow such undemocratic laws.
January 21, 2009 / 20:36
If this is truly Sid Ryan and not some CUPE pion.
Why don't you really tell us the real reason why CUPE 3903 are not budgeting on there demands.
Why don't you tell them that you are using them like pawns for your "so called collective good".
Why don't you tell them what you really want is to have all the university CUPE locals in Ontario to have there contacts up at the same time so you can have the upper hand in the next bargaining round.
What you want is to put a gun to every university students head to get what you want.
Sid I think you brand of 50 to 70's UK unionist tactics are like the dinosaurs. I think you should join your friend Buzz and go into retirement. I also suggest that you next career should not be in politics, in referencing your past failures in trying to get elected.
Also may I suggest that you look into purchasing a certain product in natural male enhancement, to help you in overcoming your short comings.
January 21, 2009 / 20:41
Hmmmm... while "Nothing Runs Like A Deere" (to Mexico from Welland, that is!), and others are losing jobs as well...
...this just goes to prove that "Nothing Wines Like A School-teacher!"
If Harris was still running Ontario, those CUPE bastards would have been ordered back to work.
January 22, 2009 / 07:26
Rob for the win. This all about having as many university contracts as possible expire at once. Then the gun is to the head of hundreds of thousands of students not just a measly 50000. The union has no intention of negotiating in good faith. The union members should be ashamed of themselves.
January 22, 2009 / 08:38
Union members are being laid off everywhere you look. Unions are losing their cash flow. These "good faith" demands are just to stem the bleeding from their wallets, not for the benefit of the members or for a "just society".
January 22, 2009 / 09:21
Hey Nick,
Nigel here. My view on the PSAC is not to positive. They spend more money on the buffet at their bi-weekly conventions than they do on proper negotiations and collective bargaining. Check out your components budget numbers and you'd be suprised at how little is spent on negotiating on our behalf.
January 22, 2009 / 10:03
We seem to be on the same wavelength.
January 22, 2009 / 11:14
These CUPE arseholes are just setting things up for their "big show" in 2011 when these selfish bastards will hold post secondary students across the province hostage.
Thank God my kids won't be attending university for a few more years.
CUPE should be greatful they have jobs. Maybe they should talk to their CAW "brothers" in Oshawa or Windsor who may paint a different picture for them.
January 22, 2009 / 13:11
Last time I looked, labour laws in Ontario allow for people to join Unions, have rights to collective bargaining and if not successful the right to strike. (education is NOT an essential service Freddie) Funny how Obama's first piece of new progressive legislation will The Freedom of Choice Act. All you jealous Union bastards out there, if you don't like it, GFY. You can't beat them,(lashing out doesn't count) may as well join them.
January 22, 2009 / 13:58
2 things Syd old boy is missing.
#1. Negotiation means that you get some of your demands and conceed on others. I think you want everything. That's not negotiation or bargaining. Sorry.
#2. If the work conditions for your union are so shit... GET A REAL JOB!
January 22, 2009 / 14:15
Yes, technically, and most importantly to the uneducated that seem to populate many of the unions, education is not an essential service. But to anyone with half a brain education is an essential need and should be legislated as an essential service. And yes, unions and their right to strike is still legal. Let’s face it, in most cases, the unions have outlived their usefulness and have no concept of what’s going on in the real world.
January 22, 2009 / 15:21
Let’s face it, in most cases, the unions have outlived their usefulness and have no concept of what’s going on in the real world.
Unions are probably the only ones that know whats going on in the "real world".
January 22, 2009 / 16:34
Mike, You're only half right about people are free to join unions in Ontario. People HAVE TO JOIN unions as closed shops are the order of the day. Allow the people real choice and you'd see union membership fall faster than the NDP's popularity.
January 23, 2009 / 09:58
By the way....Inflation is at 1.2% now not 3.7% as Syd conveniently took that stat when oil was $150 a barrel.
Greedy bastards. Abolish unions now! They are the main reason the economy is where it is.
January 23, 2009 / 11:52
IanS, WRONG! I could type an impressive list of how many joined by choice but, seeing I'd be wasting my time, I'll throw just one out, the workers at McMaster University.
January 23, 2009 / 16:39
You're full of crap Mike. Do you think I could get a job working the line at Ford in Oakville without joining the union? Assuming I would want to work at Ford in Oakville, that is.
January 24, 2009 / 11:08
Thank you Dalton,
Well Dumpy Mcgumppy has finally woke up.
He has called the legislator
back for the York U. strike
January 25, 2009 / 13:16
That's the way it works, Rob. When both sides are at an impasse the Government plays a role in Public Sector disputes.
Ian, at one time every Unionized workplace (that wanted to) voted to join a Union or not. Yes after that, a closed shop. There are mechanisms to reverse that. Everyones good friend Mike Harris passed legislation to make it easier to decertify a Union. The instruction's have to be posted, visible in every Unionized workplace. If people don't like their Union, they can get out, collectively speaking.
January 25, 2009 / 13:23
"They are the main reason the economy is where it is."
Gary, your right about that statement and here they are!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj0JAfq4esk
January 26, 2009 / 08:09
Mike, we're not talking about decertification. We're just talking about getting a job and having the choice of joining the union in that particular workplace or not. It can't be done and that is wrong.

It’s an aberration that the President of the United States endorses a mosque so close to the biggest and most atrocious terrorist act in the history of the World! It’a spit in the face of the people that died there in horror; their families, and the rest of us Americans. It is unacceptable! We should wait until the mosque is finished, and then blow it up while all the Muslims are in there praying!!! See how they feel about that

You should try a whey protein isolate. Isolate is similar to concentrate, but in a purer form. Most of the fat and carbs are removed, which makes it lower in calories. I like Ergopharm's GF-Pro. The vanilla taste really good and has 21 grams of protein per serving with only 3 grams of carbs and half a gram of fat. In all it only has 100 calories. I've made really good gains since i've switched from whey protein concentrate.

I was fashionably late for Buy Replica Handbag. Fortunately for me, my fellow Americans in Paris difficulties in transporting the student protests in Paris on Thursday afternoon. I was relieved when my host to find the tea in the relaxing comfortably upholstered chair with his sketchbook and pencil to write down ideas at the last minute after the meeting that a woman had to be taken. It was not the first time one of us has enjoyed the afternoon tea at the Hotel Bristol in Paris, but it was the first time we had together, but I venture to say probably not last long.
