You're Damn Right It's A Farce

December 30, 2008 @ 08:50

Let me preface this entry by saying that I realize taste is subjective and one man's love is another man's misery.

And to take it one step further, for many years I was part of a comedy based morning show but that doesn't mean everyone found it funny. I'm sure there were many people who found the Humble and Fred Show to be downright stupid.

Now that that's out of the way I feel a little more comfortable giving my opinion on the Royal Canadian Air Farce.

It will come to an end tomorrow night on the CBC with New Years Special. Counting the years it was on radio, it marks the end of a 38 year run that began on television in the early 90's with a two hundred thousand dollar government grant.

Listen, you can't argue with success and apparently over its 16 year TV run it averaged over a million viewers a week, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. On the contrary, I can't stand it.

Sometimes when I'm flipping around the channels I'll land upon a re-run of the Air Farce and take it all in. I get this aggravating feeling in the pit of my stomach and they wonder who anyone could watch it and how it could garner enough ratings to survive as long as it did.

Maybe that was the key. It was like a train wreck and Canadians from coast to coast did what I did. They watched it while basking in the disbelief of how utterly horrible it was.

Sorry folks, you may have noticed I'm a political junkie and I love satire just as much as the next guy, but this show was badly written and the so-called comedic acting was even worse.

Roger Abbott and Don Ferguson aren't very good at the best of times, but the forced and amateurish offerings of Luba Goy is what always bothered me most about my tax dollars going to support this waste of time.

It's one of those inexplicable things. You sit there and watch it and you wonder how the hell it ever got to this point.

Who ever told these people they were funny?

Who thought it would be a good idea to give them a radio show?

Whose bright idea was it to put them on television?

But most of all, who are the people watching this crap in numbers large enough to let it continue?

To tell you the truth, if I get the chance I may actually carve out some time tomorrow night to watch the last show along with a million other people, but only for the same reason that people slow to down to check out a head on collision.

There's something weird within us all that attracts us to disasters.

It's the only explanation I can come up with.

That was awful Pete. Horrible acting and old cliche jokes.

They did some good impersonations.
Kids in the Hall with their gay humour was low.
SNL is so so.
There is some advertising type humour that puts down men as funny...sells dick!
Like the fat dude with a backward 7 on his chest.
It filters into TV shows.

I always was a bit pi**ed that my tax money went to this...not healthcare...not road pothole repairs...but the air farce...i am a person with very wide and varied love of different styles of humor and movies and music.
A guy that can love opera, metal and rap. Low brow comedy and silent films.
My humor can go from AD Clay, to chris rock. But air farce was horrible.
I never could get thru an entire episode...it is great to hear they are off the air.
PS i am in my early 40's and my mother in her 60's...you would think her generation likes it...but she equally hated it.

I don't know anybody who ever liked the show, and I have seen only a skit or two over their 16 year run, which was not enough to make me want to watch an episode. So what are the numbers? If it was critically acclaimed I can see our tax dollars standing by it for a season or two, but if the numbers were continually low - it should be regarded as a scandal.
But on the lighter side - I see a few new senators in the making

Worst...show....ever. If you exclude anything that has that human douche Ben what's his face in it.

Fred, I confessed this last year.

http://www.torontomike.com/2007/08/confession_time.html

One minute of "The Kids in the Hall" contains more pure hilarity than an entire season of "Royal Canadian Air Farce".

What's wrong Freddie, you couldn't appreciate those dead-on satires of Bill VanderZalm's Social Credit experiment in B.C. circa 1986?

Luba Goy was on with Charles Adler earlier this year to talk about the Air Farce and it was the most uncomfortable interview I've ever heard. The woman acted like she was Lucille Ball and that the end of Air Farce was a watershed moment in Canadian comedy history.

Who, other than university professors and the CBC cafeteria staff, would show up to watch this dreck being taped?

Toronto Mike's right...the opening credits of Kids in the Hall or SCTV were funnier than 38 years of this crowd on radio or TV.

It's likely Luba Goy is a nice lady, and I'm sure there are folks out there who think she is national treasure. I am not one of them.

Freddie, you are right. You're "comedy based morning radio show" was not very funny. What IS funny, is how you think other people's comedy is not.

Yes, Airfarce is a little long in the tooth. But, it has a very loyal audience.

Your comments sound a little envious to me. How many years did that Brampton "comedy based" radio show last? How many years has AF lasted? Try being gratious to those who have done well. It will be easier on your ulser.

There are striking similarities between Air Farce's popularity and other so called top shows/personalities in this Country.

How the hell did Mike Bullard become our funniest comic and have his own show for a number of years?

Ever watch an episode of Wingfield Farm on CBC? Oh please give it a go.

Ben Mulroney?

Rick The Temp?

I'm sure there are many other examples, but the point is, SOMEONE thinks these people are the best possible candidates for each of those jobs.

There are a lot of unknown, talented Canadian actors/comedians/hosts out there, and it's a shame we'll never hear about them.

I could only watch that show for about 2 minutes to remind myself how boring it was. Barf barf and more barf

Not a fan but more than a million Canadians were watching a real Canadian show employing Canadians.

Just like all the sports channels I must take as part of my cable package I realize that some folks like it and I accept it.

This hour has 22 minutes trumps Air Farce.

At least when it had Rick Mercer.

To Ryan....the problem with Canadian media is that it is a fraternity of people who are all in love with each other. They all believe that one another is really good at what they do.

There is no regard to what the public thinks and thus leaves no choice for us. You are right about many talented people that we never see. I can walk down my street and pick out a better crew to host anything on any channel.

It's an 'old boys club' (not all male though) that only chooses its own and loves themselves. So sad....

...may be right....they have had a very loyal long term audience....its called life term in prison...i am sure they are the loyal audience....come to think of it...witness may stand for witness protection...LOL

I'm probably gonna get roasted here, but I was a fan. I grew up with the show on radio and followed it to TV. It was way better in the John Morgan days and in the years since he left it steadily started getting less and less funny and it became less and less of a must watch. I'm sad to see it go because like it or not it really is a pretty big part of Canadian history, but I can't deny that it was time.

January 6, 2009 / 11:40

I agree with you Steve. I remember it on the radio and it was funny. Dave Broadfoot et al were very creative. The first few seasons on TV were good, but then it started going down hill, especially when they adopted this "live" concept. Not any of their fortes.

The point is that most comedy is a one shot effort, even if it is hilarious it rarely raises a laugh the second time around. I agree with some of the posters above that Air farce was not great but compared to what?? Rick Mercer is irritating and some of 20 Mins is still funny. I think fred and Stafford and those of similair ilk are just sort of envious. They contsantly rail against the CBC, but without it what would we have?? Awful Tv like Global and CTV etc. Oh and Fred did have one thing right the "humour" of Humble and Fred was truly awful. If the Air Farce is an example of government subsidized mediocrity then surely "Humble and Fred"should be held up high as a prime example of when private business genius produces the goods--result?? pure strong smelling doo doo.Thank God for the internet and the ability to listen to how radio should and can be programmed: the government sponsored BBC!!

Who in their right mind would have assumed constructing a mosque at ground zero appeared to be wise? I'm not really a great fan of both Glen Beck or Sarah Palin however , vs Obama and his idiotic organization, this couple are geniuses, get real Usa, there's a lot of strange stuff going on. Betty.

I cannot help but think that there is more significant situations toward which you should be directing our interest and utilizing our means. Just how many mag pages are squandered with full-color pictures of various celebrities, as well as how much data transfer useage is thrown away weekly by incessant ramblings of high profile groupies?

Fine that Lindsay Lohan gets really serious in regard to herself, she calls for rehabilitation like Mel Gibson would need a professional, with some luck this girl is not going to get discharged from rehab quickly on this occasion as becoming released early from UCLA was most probably the main simple reason why this girl relapsed so rapidly in the 1st place, i am only praying for your needs completely Lindsay, I truly you’re able to conquer your your addictive habits.

A black leather bag is an essential option for everyday life. The elastic properties of leather and hides dirt black means that you have a bag that fits for a wide range of different uses. For example, you might want to go in a bag normally used for work, and go to the gym and on weekends to picnic, or if you prefer, you can get a selection of Fashion Knock Off Handbags for each activity. Do you prefer a black leather bag is an excellent choice. It takes a lot longer than other types of pocket and begins to look better with age.
