Shameful Money

December 17, 2008 @ 17:31

If you read this blog often, you're aware of my declining interest in professional sports.

It's got a little bit to do with everything. I'm tired of the salaries, the attitude and the expense of professional sports, and recent baseball signings make it even less palatable.

I read today that the Philadelphia Phillies signed outfielder Raul Ibanez, (whoever he is) to a three year contract worth 31.5 million dollars.

Given the current economic climate, especially in the United States, I find it almost heartless that pro sports teams offer these contracts let alone hold big news conferences to announce them.

Yes I know, it's the free market system and every man should take what he can get but something still doesn't sit well when someone who catches a stupid baseball is handed 31 million dollars while thousands are losing jobs that barely keep a roof over their heads.

At the very least you'd think that maybe baseball, and other major league sports for that matter would take a more low key approach to announcing their mind boggling if not perverse salary offers.

Last week it was former Blue Jays pitcher AJ Burnett who signed with the Yankees.

He got 83 million dollars over five years, and he's not even that good. He's above average at best, yet his windfall becomes front page news while auto workers wonder if their world will collapse in the next few weeks.

Where's the compassion? Where's the heart?

Of course it all comes back to the fan. These salaries wouldn't be possible if fans didn't continue to support pro sports.

Salaries started to explode in the late 80's and professional teams and athletes have had a pretty good run since then, but you can't help but wonder if this gravy train is about to end as well.

The entertainment dollar is often the first affected when tough times hit, so it would only be fitting, and logical and just if fans stopped paying the freight that allows otherwise simple men to make tens of millions of dollars to play with balls and sticks and pucks.

Imagine if there was just a fifty percent correction. Instead of making 80 million over the next five years, AJ Burnett only made forty million while tickets prices were cut in half along with parking, beer and souvenirs.

It would still be outrageous to my mind but it would be a step in the right direction.

A lot of the economic woes that we're going through right now are blamed on greed, and that greed has made many things crash and burn.

Maybe pro sports in next.

I sort of hope so.

Way too much money and time is accorded to these over paid and pampered jocks. Sure a few of them are decent sorts who give time to charity but most of them are not.

I feel sorry for the folks who Rogers let go in the Jays front office. The millionaire ball players will keep on cashing their cheques.

I think we may get our wish and Pro athletes are in for a rude awakening next year. I don't know where the Yankees are getting their money from, maybe they own a printer to make the stuff, but I Think next year is going to ripple through pro sports, we are already seeing some of it, Tiger Woods lost a sponsor and some of these athletes are losing their coorporate income from advertising deals. Next is the the credit crunch affecting fans ability to pay for season tickets.
Its coming....LArry Quinn was just on Schopp and the Bulldog down here and he said that the reality they got from some economists at the NHL meetings was not good for next year and that the Salary cap is probably going down next year. I hope it does and the players are going to have to live with it.

Good book called Lord of the Realms. About baseball, their union and the owners.
Many years old but it's about the owners forking out lots of $$$$ way back when.
Marvin Miller suggested keeping salaries realistic and the egotistical owners said we'll do it our way and pay so so players lots of dough. Still true today eh Fred.

maybe it's Lords of the Realm.

"Where's the compassion? Where's the heart?"

This sounds more like Olivia Chows's blog.

The owners have the millions to pay the players because the fans drop the cash to watch and drink the beer. Its all market driven.

If the owners kept the cash and didn't pay the players, then the money would not get taxed twice.

Fred, I thought you were right of center? Apparantly not!

Did Jack Layton hack this site or something? What did you do with the real Fred?
I'm always astounded by the salaries of pro athletes (in fact almost any salary given to anyone in the entertainment industry), but let's face it, would any of us turn down the same dollars if they were offered to us? Would any one of us say, "You know what, only pay me half of the money and send the rest to Africa." I doubt it.
I'll use an example Fred can relate to: What does a high profile radio personality in the morning time slot make in a big market? $600k? More? You can lead an awfully comfortable life on half of that (considering the median household income in Canada is around $53,000), but I'm not aware of any of those guys advocating 50% pay cuts and 50% cuts to advertising rates. Where's the compassion?
Sorry Fred, got to go against you on this one. We live in a capitalist society. Them's the breaks.

In your own words, "These salaries wouldn't be possible if fans didn't continue to support pro sports"

Fred, I have to agree with the last 3 posts. As long as the interest is there, what is the problem?

Just remember, Layton wants to make all of us poor. But I prefer capitalism and if means some Jays pitcher is making 83 million, what do i care?

It's not just sports players that may be overpaid.

What about those loud-mouthed, holier-than-thou idiot "hollyweird sill-ebrities" who think they can tell the great unwashed how to vote, how the world should be run, etc.? Last time I checked, that windbag Oprah for example hauled in a helluva lot more money than the highest-paid sports figure. And; some actors and actrets haul in 20 million... for six months work... that's quite shorter than a full sports-season.

To me, it takes more skill to throw a baseball, shoot a hockey puck, slam dunk, be a QB, star wide-receiver, etc. at the highest level; than it does to get paid to play 'make-believe' in tinsel-town and spew off looney-left bile.
