Ottawa Senators

December 22, 2008 @ 20:54

I might as well respond to this one quickly before all the Harper haters fill my inbox demanding my take on today's Senate appointments.

I know what the take will be by the Harper haters. The words patronage and abuse will be heavily used. Harper haters will try and angle the appointment of eighteen Senators as some kind of seedy back room deal.

But it's not.

To my mind it's a lot like the four billion dollar bailout that Harper was forced into.

The Prime Minister didn't want the country to go into deficit, but once it became apparent that the auto makers would need a bailout, and that some form of stimulus would be needed there was no avoiding it.

The irony is, the same people that demanded the Prime Minister do something, are the same people that are now criticizing him for the deficit.

Mindless really.

Same thing with today's Senator appointments. The Prime Minister pushed and pushed for an elected Senate but experienced nothing but push-back at every turn.

So what does he do? He does what any rational human being would do. With another federal election staring him in the face, he fills the Senate with his own choices.

He didn't want to. He wanted to reform the Senate. He wanted Senators to be voted into office, but when that was met with resistance he was left with no alternative.

He had to play the appointment game.

And why the hell wouldn't he?

Hey last Week Ignatief said Harper should fill the empty seats.

Done and done.

Chretien did the same thing.

Most of his appointments I believe also support his elected senate push. So this is far from over. How can anyone criticize this when the Senate is already overloaded with Liberals??

Patterson, hopefuly you get a new Harper blowup doll for Christmas. I would think the one you have now is so full of you it is beyond cleaning.

100% Fred – he did what anyone would have done – I hope he does not drop the issue, we need a reformed senate

Chipper LOL I knew somebody would post something like that. As Pauly posted Ignatief got what he asked for.

People forget that the socialist turned Liberal Trudeau asked Turner to nominate Senators then used the Liberal Press to 'nail' Turner for doing so. Turner went down like a sack of sh*t.
Martin too due to someone else setting him up.

Hey Chipper, likewise with you and your 12" Liberal dildo.

Since he his hiding from a confidence vote via prorogued parliament Harper should not have the right to appoint senators.

Like all politicians Harper makes up the rules as he goes along. I find it surprising he appointed a separatist. I thought all you Reform Party fans thought separatist folks were in cahoots with the devil? At least that's what you were all saying a few weeks ago.

Why the hell wouldn't he play the game? Because he said he never would.

It's fine that he appointed senators, he's well within his right to. All he's done is turn himself into an even bigger hypocrite than before. What about this man is so trustworthy? Is it when he complained about the prospect of a coalition government after he himself had tried to put one together just a few years earlier? More hypocrisy.

It's also absolutely hilarious (and hypocritical too) that Harper was so concerned about the $30 million going to the parties in these tough economic times, since these 18 senators will costs us about $6 million a year. That's 20% of that money already gone!! Wish he would have put how he was going to use that money in his economic statement as well.

Bottom line: Harper has a problem sticking to his principles. Go ahead and appoint senators, that's how our system works, but don't say you'll never do it. Go ahead and attack the idea of a coalition, but not after you tried to put one together yourself.

So Fred, it's not that he didn't want to, that's fine. Go ahead and say "Hey, I'd like to see the senate become an elected body, but since we only have a minority government that might not be a possibility right now. If that's the case then I will work within the system as the governments before me have." But no, he had to take a hard line, say he would never appoint a senator. Then he appoints the most in one day in Canadian history!! I do wish I had his brainwashing skills though, they're quite impressive.

Harper has only proved what a joke the whole senate is. It’s a complete waste of our taxpayers’ money.

I mean he really should have gone all out and named Wendel Clark, Bob Probert, Clifford Olsen and a bunch of other “canadians’ as senators.

Either that or he really is clueless……

Mikey,

The way I understand it, he's appointed Senators that are for an elected Senate. I agree, that it seems hypocritical, but I'm willing to sit and wait till the majority of the upper chamber are Conservative and also for and elected senate, before I pull out the knives. (I think there is a dozen left to replace before that is acceived).

If Harper has to play the game in the meantime to stack the Senate in his favour for future circumstances (i.e. someone else become PM), I'm ok with that as long as he reforms that God-awful waste of money where political ass kissers go to die and take naps while they wait.

I was going to write how Fred totally twists things in Harper's favour...ALL THE TIME!! But I think I will just say....all politicians are the same. There are each worse than each other.

Harper, Ignatieff, Rae, Layton, Trudeau...etc etc etc.....really now..what is the difference?? NOTHING AT ALL!

The only way to ge senate reform is to balance the power in the Senate. They are still short of getting it done.

no doubt. The common theme is they can get worse like GBush but never better.

Pauly Walnuts

Argie, that's like saying Rae will go down as one of Ontario's best Premiers. Wake up, Bush was a disaster.

G.W. Bush will join Lincoln and Truman as a President who did unpopular things during his presidency in order to safeguard his country. Unlike Clinton and Obama, who stick their finger into the air to see which way the polls are blowing. No pun intended about Clinton.

Murph
December 27, 2008 / 00:09

Argie/Left,

Bush will go down as the worst president of all time.

I dont make that statement lightly. Timing has much to do with it, when he took office the economy was peaking, when he leaves it is almost in depression. He allowed his inner circle convice him to invade Iraq. That decision has handcuffed the US from succeeding in an important conflict in Afghanastan. The Iraq invasion has crippled the US economy spending them heavily into debt. Under Bushes watch China has steadily consumed US$ in enormous sums taking control of the US economy. Under Bush's watch the US went from THE Superpower, to one of the powers in the world.

The Senate has long outlived its usefulness. Personally, I'm very angery that Harper is gonna stock the Upper House with his cronies after all the talk he made about reforming or abolishing the institution.

Now before you start jumping on the "he had no choice" bandwagon like everyone else - HE DID HAVE A CHOICE. Harper could and should have refused to fill the seats and throw the gauntlet down on the table. Doesn't he know that most Canadians want the Senate abolished altogether?! He would have received so much more public support by sticking to his words and challenging the other parties to try to defend the outdated Upper House.

I gotta agree with Mikey's remarks here. If you're going to say you want to change the Senate; go ahead and do it! If you say coalitions are undemocratic and undermine the institution of Parliament; don't try to create one!
