November 20, 2008 / 18:09
Wendel is definitely in the tops of the list of the best Leafs of all time.
You should not have the name Sundin anywhere in this entry Fred.
November 20, 2008 / 19:23
Because he scored more points than any of them?
November 20, 2008 / 19:27
Please. I have:
1) Wendel Clark jersey - autographed.
2) Framed Wendel Clark "Tribute In Action" print - autographed
3) Framed Wendel Clark Retirement print - autographed.
4) Wendel Clark bobblehead
5) Someone even had him sign a ACC cocktail napkin and framed that for me as a joke - but I kept it.
I do not collect or display any other hockey memorabilia except what I've listed. In other words, I'm a Clark fanatic. My number one all-time Leaf. But guess what? I think Mats Sundin was great. Any pinhead who can't appreciate the greatness of these two different types of hockey players can't truly appreciate the game itself.
November 20, 2008 / 22:27
Max,
I usually agree with your logical common sense opinions but I think you're completely devoid of reason when it comes to Wendel.
He is by far the most over rated player to ever wear the leaf jersey. I always believed he must have had pictures of members of the media in compromising positions to get the positive publicity this turd received. Yes, he could fight and had a good wrist shot but outside of that he couldn't set up a play to save his life, he didn't see the ice well at all and took many undisciplined penalties.
Check out his stats at hockey database.com and you'll see he has no business getting his jersey raised. For the life of me I can't believe the leafs haven't let anyone wear the #17 since his departure. I mean for Christ's sake others have worn the # 21 when the greatest leaf of all time wore that number (the one true hall of famer Borje Salming).
Anyway I made my point.
Fred - 'getting choked up' - please.....
November 20, 2008 / 22:56
Argie,
The Leafs don't retire number except for players who have died while still with the team (only Ace Bailey and Bill Barilko). So the Leafs don't prevent anyone from wearing #17. The players just know better.
I know Wendel's stats: reg. season - 564 points in 793 games. Playoffs: 69 points in 95 games. The man isn't remembered only for his numbers.
November 20, 2008 / 23:57
To be honest, I had a hard time holding back the tears when I watched that video as well.
It totally pulls on the heartstrings.
Call me a suck, but that inter-squad training camp fight, that steady stream of rock solid hits and the way Wendel would absolutely pound his opponents face when he finally got him pinned down on the ice, gets me every time.
God Bless, Wendel !
November 21, 2008 / 09:02
Pound for pound he was the toughest player to ever put on a leaf uniform. Wendel may have not scored the points of the mans who name we not mention, He was 100 times the leader that Sundin will ever be. If I was building a team Wendel would have been the first player I choose
November 21, 2008 / 09:29
I agree Clark was a great Captain and Team Leader, but Fred you dilute the whole posting when you bash Sundin AGAIN. Both were great leaders from a different era.Get over your hate for Sundin and look at the stats for crise sake.Oh by the way it will be Sundin's jersey next.
November 21, 2008 / 09:36
Praise Wendel all you want. Why do you have to bring up your hate for Sundin in the same comment? Everyone knows you hate Sundin. He has no heart and can’t lead a team and sucks in the playoffs. You have said it a million times. Write a nice entry about Clark and be done with it. Bringing up Mats only makes you look (or proves you to be) bitter about a player that has never done anything personally to you. Let it drop.
November 21, 2008 / 09:59
Line them up all in their prime. Clark, Sittler, Gilmour, Sundin.
Who would you take. I know who Burke would take.
Why has Wendell become a legaend. Maybe cause he inspired Leaf fans at a low point when some of them wouldn't go in the corners?.
November 21, 2008 / 10:55
While we're at it, let's throw Keon and Mahovlich under the bus too.
They weren't fighters.
Is this making any sense?
November 21, 2008 / 11:12
Exactly Dave. It doesn't make any sense (except to Fred).
November 21, 2008 / 12:02
Hey Max, I'd like to see Argue call Wendel a turd to his face.
November 21, 2008 / 12:08
Wasn't about the fights anymore than the Flyers with Shultz were.
All about bodychecks and standing up for your teammates.
Any Canadians here?
November 21, 2008 / 12:30
Mike, yeah, I thought "turd" was overly harsh. Especially considering his personality off-ice. Wendel's one of the nicest, down-to-earth guys you'd ever meet. Doesn't have a bad word to say about anyone.
November 21, 2008 / 12:35
I'd like to see that video with Rheostatics "Ballad of Wendel Clark" used as the music bed.
November 21, 2008 / 13:31
I posted this clip months ago, in response to a Sundin post... I want royalties Fred.
November 21, 2008 / 15:49
Max,
I'll take your word for it that he's a good guy but I just don't get the great Toronto love-in for this guy. Again, yes he was tough and could fight guys much larger than him but the same can be said about Tie Domi. Both were worshipped in this city so it really makes me wonder why I'm still a Leaf fan. When Montreal and Sens fans make fun Leaf fans, I can sometimes understand why.
Granted Wendel had much more touch than the stone hands Domi but really, could he do much else?
Also, when you look at his fights you can clearly see how he frequently sucker punch many of his opponents (that is if you can take off the blue Leaf goggles).
November 21, 2008 / 15:58
Argie you sound like a fool. Clark went after guys face to face, often bigger than he was.
He was a leader, he was tough, he had an amazing wrist shot, and as a kid he was forced to carry a horrible franchise on his back.
He never wimpered, he never complained and he never took a game off.
To compare Domi and Clark is rediculous. Domi was untalented, selfish dead wood. The exact opposite of Wendel.
You jerk off.
November 21, 2008 / 16:17
And Jeff would be an example of this blinded love affair with Wendel. Its great that you treasure him so much but you might not want to actually post it in a public forum. OK Jeff???
November 21, 2008 / 16:36
Argie, I hate to say it, but you're living up to Mike's nickname for you now. I mean really, what are you saying here:"...Wendel had much more touch than the stone hands Domi but really, could he do much else?"
How much more is there to do when you're a forward in the NHL except to score regularly? The comparison is insulting, really. Domi could fight. The end. Clark might have had one season that he wasn't injured and he still managed 5 30+ goal seasons. Domi didn't even get 30 POINTS once.
November 21, 2008 / 16:54
Like I said Fred, get over your hate for Sundin.Clark, Sittler or even Gilmour didn't bring the cup to Toronto. But his stats back him up as one of the greats.
November 21, 2008 / 17:33
Wendel will always be modern day face of the Leafs.
November 21, 2008 / 17:51
Oh wow, sucker punching, cheap shot artist. Is it all it takes to have a number retired In TO is to be a average fighter and have a good wrist shot wow!! I did'nt see him fightimg any of the heavies of the day.. only flyweight wimps, who he usually attacked after a blindside cheapshot..What has he ever won ????At least in Montreal you have to win something like a Stanley Cup or something to have a number retired. God bless St.Patrick, is having #33 retired after a good career. Go Habs.......
November 21, 2008 / 18:34
Randy, you idiot. Bob Probert wasn't a heavyweight? Behn Wilson wasn't a heavyweight? John Kordic wasn't a heavyweight? Marty McSorely wasn't a heavyweight? Typical ignorant Habs fan - spouting off without knowing what he's talking about.
November 21, 2008 / 18:55
It's amazing what hits the cutting room floor in the video room,, just saw a bit of Porbert vs Wendy, i'm sure had he won the other fights they would be on the video.......yawwwnnnnnn...Habs Rule,... 24 .....
November 21, 2008 / 20:07
Now THAT'S a captain!
November 22, 2008 / 08:14
And this thread is exactly why the Leafs are becoming a laughing stock in the world of professional hockey.
Being a scrappy player with a gung-ho attitude is good and all, but scoring goals wins you games and Sundin trumps Clark in the talent department.
I guess people are more that happy to have their team continue their tradition of mediocre and uninspiring hockey just so long as we can throw in a couple of "feel-good" players every now and then.
Good luck winning a Stanley Cup if you place showmanship and sentiment above talent and drive.
November 22, 2008 / 12:46
Is he still married to Toller Cranston ?
November 22, 2008 / 18:36
Leaf fans are so hungry for heroes, I hear they'll be retiring the Zamboni driver's number next!
November 22, 2008 / 19:58
Hey Cashcleaner....Clark scored his fair share of goals. One year he had 47. His inspiration and passion is something Sundin never had.
November 22, 2008 / 22:10
Sundin...1305 games ,,1321 pts,,1.01 ppg. Clark 793 games,,564 pts,.71 ppg. Look at the numbers.Case Closed..
November 23, 2008 / 01:24
Just a thought for you "Leaf" fans.
Sundin scores goals. So what. Clark was a leader.
The Leafs are the richest franchise in hockey. And they suck. The Flames kicked their ass last week. The Oilers can to. With all the money in the world you can't even make the playoffs, but like drones to your team, you show up, cheering them on. Sorry losers, your team is over. The Habs are 10x better than the Leafs.
I wish the Flames & Oilers played the Leafs more..just to watch them lose.
If the Yankees or Manchester United had a record like the Leafs, the fans would revolt and burn the stadium to the ground. Not Leaf fans. They're sold o nthe fact they "might win"
Toronto Maple Leafs. Rebuilding since 1967. A loser team. With loser fans.
November 23, 2008 / 09:02
Irvine, another posting that proves what a fool you are.
The Flames Atlanta/Calgary have been around since 1972 and have one Stanley Cup to show for it. Yes, that's one more than the Leafs, but over their history, the Flames actually have a lower winning percentage than the Leafs during the same time frame.
And just to service your thin brain on another point, the Leafs beat Edmonton 5-2 recently.
You are probably one of the weasels who remained silent through the 90's and the early 2000's while the Leafs compiled one of the best winning percentages in the NHL, and put together "the best" playoff record.
No, they didn't win, but provided fans with some great entertainment.
Another thing, somehow it got by you that the NHL now has a salary cap, so the Leafs can't "buy" a championship. Actually, they have no more money than anyone else.
And before you get carried away, if you think the Habs are 10x better than the Leafs, you better spend a little more time studying the game.
The Canadiens have been finding their true level lately.
This posting shows what you're all about Irvine.
Thirty percent fact, 70 percent bullshit.
You're actually creepy.
November 23, 2008 / 09:56
Habs 10, Make Beliefs 0, since 1968............
November 23, 2008 / 10:17
Maybe one day the leafs will be able to raise a Stanley cup banner.
Wendell was/is popular. Still seems odd to honour someone who didn't help bring in a Stanley Cup.
Gene
"the Leafs compiled one of the best winning percentages in the NHL, and put together "the best" playoff record."
That's amazing have the best play off records and still not winning.
Good job leafs. Better record than Calgary but cowtown still have won more cups than the loafs since 67.
November 23, 2008 / 12:39
LOL, how typical. This is exactly what I mean
Toronto Maple Leaf fans are like Italian soccer fans. When they win, they carry the flag oh so high, they tell the world how wonderful they are. When they lose & YOU'RE in their face, they cry and whine that it's unfair.
Gene: No, I used to be a Leaf fan, long ago when the Leafs put out a team. They played exciting hockey that was thrilling to watch. Today they suck. Wow, eh Gene, one of your "own" turning on the Leafs Nation? Or maybe just sick and tired of the BS.
Habs are 10X better. They won the cup 10 times since the Leafs last did. Or does winning the cup NOT matter.
Irvine, bodychecking this forum since 2007.
November 23, 2008 / 13:47
I hope your flimsy loyalty doesn't apply to your friends.
For some reason I think it probably does because your postings reek of instability.
November 23, 2008 / 15:03
Freddie...love ya...but do you have to throw your sundin hatred into every leaf post....every time?
Can you not just say some nice things about wendel without putting down sundin.
I liked wendel. I loved sundin. They are completely different players and it should not be one over the other.
Take a look a the video you supplied.
Is it mostly about goals?....no...very few shown..what is shown is alot of hits and alot of fights.
Now compare to sunding...very few game changing hits...zero fighting..but a ton of goals.
Wendel appeals to those a little older as they wax nostalgic over the old style hockey with fights and huge bone crushing hits and that was wendel.
The new era younger crowd wants lots of goals and scoring and that was sundin.
Could you not...just once..have posted your love of wendel (I was at the game sat too) and leave it at that?
Not sure why i am posing this as i know the answer..you cannot...
November 23, 2008 / 16:52
Irvine, you just got owned. Deal with it, you puffed-up blowhard. Here's a tip: spend less time reassuring yourself about how great you are, and more time interacting with real people - you'll fit in one day.

First, Pettie is a "rat" who will take down anyone in the name of religion. Hopefully, Clemens will have a trial before his peers which means the jury will be composed of major league ball players including those who took drugs and those who did not. This will result in a hung jury. MLB and many players should be concern about Clemens taking his case to trial as MLB and some players are going to be "burned" badly. Hopefully this is the last year I have to listen to Pettie and his Texas "tange".....:-)
