An Inconvenient Wind

November 25, 2008 @ 08:24

I can only laugh at what's happening in Scarborough. A proposed plan for wind turbines off the shore of the Scarborough Bluffs is a perfect example of the hypocrisy of most green plans and why they'll never work.

Everybody puts on a good face. Everybody wants to save the planet, and everybody claims they want to buy into anything that will save the environment.... until of course, it affects them directly.

Those who live along the Bluffs over-looking Lake Ontario are digging in their heels. Yes, they realize Canada should get away from fossil fuels, and yes they'd like wind power to become the wave of the future, but no, they don't want to look at windmills placed a couple of miles out in the lake.

At first they just told the truth. The windmills will be an eye sore and could affect property values. But once they realized that story was a little on the selfish side and made them look like enemies of the planet, they turned to a bullshit story about bird migration being disrupted.

Whatever it takes to preserve their view of the lake.

Hey, I don't blame these people. If I lived on the Bluffs over-looking the lake I'd probably be pissed off too, but I'm not one of those wieners who buys into advanced global warming hysteria and I don't claim to be ready to do what David Suzuki tells me do while making hundreds of thousands of dollars telling me to do it.

I bet you could go all over North America and find the same thing that's happening in Scarborough.

The people who are directly affected by the windmills are probably the same people who when asked previously would say they would support anything that would help the environment, and the people who gathered at a meeting in Scarborough last night and fall in favour of the windmills, probably live nowhere near the area.

And if the roles were reversed, the opinions would be reversed. Those who don't want them now, would, and those who do, wouldn't'.

That's the reality of the situation and the reason I laugh at all those people who use "An Inconvenient Truth" as reference to the world's so-called environmental crisis.

Everybody wants to save the polar bears. Until they have to go out into the cold.

You can put up all the windmills you want, but 50 years from now they will all be dismantled and written off as an absurdly stupid idea from the Suzuki's of the world.

Speyside Phil? The air a little thin up there in Cloud Nine Acres? That statement is asinine, to say the least. Tell that to all the European countries that have implemented wind turbines. Freddie, you my friend and many like you are put of the problem and not the solution. Anybody that says man has zero impact on the environment has less IQ than the number Leafs Stanley Cup wins.

Years ago when the USA went to a 55 mph speed limit on the highways during an oil crunch they conserved a huge amount.
Together we can all have a big impact.
As for the windmill in a year or so it will look unique. Property values....hahaha...''oh my, George, there's a windmill out on the lake...look through the binocs...see!!!!...I can invite my friends to visit with that thing out there"...'we'll buy in Rosedale'. enough hot air there to run a windmill.

I knew the Dutch we're right. Did they have to ask Suzuki??
You're too regional for this issue Fred, go back to the wearing your Wendell moustache.

Well I live in the affected area and i'm OK with it. They will be 2 Km's offshore for F'sake there not putting anything in our backyards . And for those that can't be bothered with facts last nights meeting was about putting up an an anemometer to see if there is enough wind to actually drive windmills. My guess is no. Having been on the huronshore and having experianced the "Normal" windflow there versus the shore of Lake Ontario in Scarborough. Either way it will take years to put them up and panicing and nimbyism is just Useless.

No Phil, intelligent people are drawn to the website.

We should be looking into alternative power sources. Maybe this particular one won't but causing less polution can only be a good thing regardless of whether or not you think Global Warming is real.

Hopefully they will turn more revolutions than the one at the CNE. Just throwing this out there but how much of a carbon footprint is generated to produce one of these? Concrete and steel are not the most environmentaly friendly to produce. I would like to see a comparison of power produced to how much it takes to produce 1 windmill.

Rick C:

The EROEI (energy return on energy invested) in wind power is about 15:1 depending on where the setup is. Tar sands oil extraction has an EROEI of about 2:1. Conventional well holes run about 20:1.

The leader in wind power in Canada is Alberta. We produce more wind power than Ontario does with about 9 million less people. This number will increase substantially when new farms come online in Pincher Creek in the next couple of years

Speyside Phil: You're obviously oblivious to the fact fossil fuels are in short supply. Don't believe me? Well, why would all this money be invested in Fort McMoney with a EROEI of 2:1? In case you aren't aware, I'm employed in the energy industry (and in fact, in Refinery Row in Edmonton right now.

For those of you complaining about the "sight" of wind mills. As you wish to continue to use fossil fuels, you'll gladly take the gunk from up in Fort Mac, right?. You can use the water from the tailing ponds in your pool.

You know the windmills we have here in Lake Erie actually look kind of majestic.
The birds will fly through them.
Now if only they could get the damn things to work.

I too watched the news last night with disbelief as residents went on about the various "side Effects" of the the proposed Wind Farm. There was a clip of the offshore Wind Farm in Copenhagen harbour which I had the pleasure of seeing first hand
earlier this year and it is inspiring to say the least. I also have a property along the shores of Lake Erie in the middle of a Wind Farm that is also in the middle of a major Migratory path as the following quote describes..... Wildlife Viewing - Port Burwell is one of the best locations along the Lake Erie shoreline to see spring and fall migration. Perhaps the most thrilling aspect is the fall migration of hawks, vultures, and eagles. You can also witness monarch butterflies, blue jays and dragonflies on their spectacular migration. More than 85 species of migratory birds have been spotted here in the spring and our bird check list includes 232 species. Lake Erie presents a barrier to these seasonal movements so the flow of migrants concentrates at and moves along the shoreline in both the spring and fall. The park is an undiscovered birder's paradise. It is located centrally between the renowned birding areas of Long Point, Rondeau and Point Pelee so the quantity and quality of birding is excellent...........The birds still fly by in huge numbers and you can't actually hear the turbines unless you are directly under them!
A Wind Farm in my backyard -
No Problem!

Ah come on what's the problem?

The toronto waterfront is already choked with ugly condos, why not put the final nail in the coffin and build the windmills.

One thing I dont' udnerstand though. Why build it within sight of a major populous? What is wrong with building a hundred windmills on the windswept bruce penninsula? One reason AC current was developed was because DC current cannot travel long distances. There is no need to have powerplants close by.

So far they want to build a testing device to see if there is enough wind to then build a windmill.
Scientifically you wet one finger and hold it up. The Guild Residents have wet a different finger.

Take a trip over the skyway in Hamilton, a wind farm would look head and tails better than what we have to look at now (and more still coming) Please send them our way!

When buying wedges for casual use, look for onces that have heels composed of cork, rubber or other soft materials. These materials will act as a cushion allowing for better shock absorption which can maximize you're comfort level.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
