Compromise

October 28, 2008 @ 08:20

This posting proves I'm not always against the McGuinty government.

Even though he's built his empire on a stack of lies, and most of what he says can't be trusted or believed, from time to time he does come up with something rational.

Like a cell phone and GPS ban which will be introduced in the Ontario legislature today.
It's not only long overdue, but it's also extremely reasonable. You will still be able to use your cell phone with an ear piece and you'll be able to use a GPS if its mounted on the dashboard.

The proposed legislation wants to get people away from one hand driving and the distraction of looking away from the road while tending to other business.

Some might argue that all forms of telephone calls and global positioning should be banned, but at this point, that's unrealistic. We've crossed the line.

Too many people depend on constant communications in their jobs. We've established new standards and to take that completely away at this point would be too damaging.

Unfortunately, in this new world of multi-tasking, over work and horrendous expectations, to take phones out of cars completely at this point would put too many people at a disadvantage.

That's why the McGuinty government has taken the measures they have. A compromise that will take gadgets out of your hands while driving, but still allow you to communicate.

It makes sense.

Fred, I don't know how many years back a buddy of mine who services cell phones said he'd be so busy installing cell phone holders in cars.
Much longer tho than the Guints been in. So some credit to him.
Now how long will it be before dangerous offenders actually fear the law...2025?

The ban didn't go far enough. Road maps and written directions should also be banned. Many people have problems handling them while drinking their morning coffee a meter off my back bumper.

It`s about bloody time!!!! The only thing that is more dangerous the a man talking on a Cell Phone and driving is a woman talking on a Cell Phone and driving. Keep your eyes on the road both hands upon the wheel!

Too bad Harper [Conservative(Reform)] was reelected, otherwise we could have eliminated all automotive accidents across the country instead of just in Ontario.

You cannot legislate common sense!! Period.

Using my GPS is much safer than using a road map since it actually talks me through the directions. I've never needed to take my eyes off the road. I can't say the same thing when I've used a map.

Finally something that Mike from Lowville and I agree about. But will the police have the cajones to enforce the law? They're some of the worst abusers.

The only people I hear disagreeing with this long-overdue law are hosts of talk radio call-in shows. Gee, I wonder why?..

Andrew
October 29, 2008 / 10:01

I don't host a radio show and I disagree with it.

While I do acknowledge that a lot of people are idiots and cause accidents due to their own stupidity, making this a law seems pointless.

Where is the law forbidding eating while driving or lighting a cigarette? Having the phone at your ear vs a head set doesn't change someone's level of attentiveness.

LEW
October 29, 2008 / 10:31

Andrew - I'm glad you lost the seatbelt debate as well...

Bob
October 29, 2008 / 10:45

The law is unnecessary. We've had careless driving on the books for years and it carries demerit points which will have far more impact on their insurance rates. If you are a distracted driver, that is what the existing law was designed for. This cell phone/electronics ticket at $500 or so a shot and no points for the driver is a cash grab straight up and plain as day. Don't believe the hype, Dolt-on McLiar wanted a photo-op to say he was doing something nobody else has regardless of whether it was already covered by existing law or not. If he actually wanted people to stop he'd issue a directive to the OPP to start laying careless charges.

Good points Bob. Nothing but a big old revenue generator. Glad to see the gun problem with certain communities has been solved so they authorities have time to deal with the cell phone issue.

Already laws on the books to deal with the boneheads.
If I velcro my iphone, blackberry, GPS to the dash does that count as being mounted?

Think there's a USA study that said there wasn't a difference in cell phone use or non use and accidents.
Can't say the same for drunk drivers and their cousins stupid drivers.

Sammi
October 29, 2008 / 15:04

It's a good compromise as Fred states. I just watched Mark Hebscher's rant against this. Is he really that stupid or does he try to be an idiot. How does he stay on the air???

mediaguy
October 29, 2008 / 16:52

Yeah, what does Hebscher know? He's only been in the media for 30 years. How long has Sammi been in the media? I thought so.

Sammi
October 29, 2008 / 16:56

Just because someone is in the media for 30 years doesn't make them good at what they do. The media in this area all love themselves and most of them are complete idiots.

Andrew
October 30, 2008 / 08:22

Lew...

Your point is obtuse, I didn't mention anything about seatbelts. And why are you implying that I am not in favour of seatbelts?

Mike from Lowville
October 30, 2008 / 08:28

Mark's rant has the same intention as square off. To hit hot buttons, get a reaction. You can tell he is not serious when he smirks as he talks.

I think this ban is good. I do not think it will magically fix things but its a positive step. I find even myself when i am using a phone, often you have to not just drive and listen, but if calling a number that requires you to then input manually other digits like a pin code, you end up looking down, looking up, looking down.

Plus i see alot of drivers these days that do not bother to signal, not just the lazy signallers,,,,but the people who have one hand on wheel and one hand on cell as they turn, without a third arm they cannot signal so they do not bother. Honk at them and they just give you the finger. Even though it will affect me...good law and unlike the poster who said we had it in careless driving already, it was not legally clear enough, which is why they reworded it into new law...and of course more revenue...who cares...got my motorola ear piece charged and ready.

Wow...must be off to their PhD class.

LEW
October 30, 2008 / 15:30

Andrew - although I do drive, I am an avid walker. 99.9% of the times that a driver is being dangerous, they have a cel to their ear, and I have had more near misses in the last few years than the rest of my life combined. I know that is not a $100,000 government survey, but admit it, the damn things are dangerous. Your arguement is the same as the folks that used to challenge the seatbelt laws - so I'm comparing you to them.

Ian S
October 31, 2008 / 08:18

Andrew,

Actually there are laws prohibiting eating while driving. Also, there have been NUMEROUS studies showing that the attention to driving is reduced by cell phone usage. If you want links to the studies I'll provide them.
