The Quiet Storm

October 31, 2008 @ 20:40

It's been interesting to listen to American conservative talk radio over the past few days.

Mental midgets like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are telling Americans not to believe the polls which have Barack Obama way out in front.

Their strategy is elementary. They want Republicans to get out and vote. You know the deal, it's difficult to get people to get out and vote at the best of times, but when they think the outcome is a foregone conclusion it's even worse.

Limbaugh and Hannity know the polls are correct, but they're so desperate to push their perverted agendas, they'll like to their listeners, tell them the polls are wrong, and hope they'll get off their fat asses and maybe close the gap.

But it may all be a waste of time.

I spent Wednesday, Thursday and the better part of Friday at a conference in Toronto. It was the Corus Entertainment Leadership Conference and a good measure of it dealt with this rapidly changing technological world and the importance of radio and television to be connected to their audience through the "new" media.

Encourage collaboration with listeners and viewers. Encourage them to be part of the process by actually contributing content.

One of the most compelling panels involved four people under 25 years of age. They called it the "Net Generation Panel" and among the group was a 22 year old woman named Rahaf Harfoush from Toronto, who's a new media strategist.

She's just a kid, but she has big clients all over the world who depend on her to come up with ways to connect them with potential customers.

But right now she's reaching the end of a three month hiatus. She has spent the last three months in Chicago working on Barack Obama's New Media Team, and apparently it's been a smashing success that could very well provide the margin of victory.

It's every simple. When it comes to new media, Obama has clobbered John McCain.

It's not that McCain's team ignored the web. They used it, but as you might expect, they used it like a 71 year old man would use it compared to a progressive 47 year old.

McCain used it, but he didn't take full advantage of it like Obama did. And part of Obama's strategy was to hire some brilliant young minds like our own Rahaf Harfoush.

A gang of kids went Chicago and set up a social network that could very well blow the doors off Tuesday's election. They set up a network that challenged young Americans to take an interest in this election.

Much like it is in Canada, it's been difficult in the United States to get 18-24 year olds to become involved in the process. A lot of them don't vote because they're turned-off by politics. They tend to lean left, but only a small percentage are inspired enough to actually go out and cast a ballot.

This year could be much different.

Tens of millions of young Americans have been reached through Obama's on-line social network which has encouraged them to stand up and be counted this time. It's an historic election featuring two distinct candidates and "net" generation has apparently bought in.

If the response to the network is any indication they will come out in droves on Tuesday night in numbers that that have never been realized before.

Not only that, but these are people that haven't been counted in the polls. They don't talk to pollsters, and often aren't even asked. So come Tuesday, it could be overwhelming, which in way, makes Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity correct.

The polls aren't accurate. Obama may have an even bigger lead than they indicate.

Wow Fred, A Corus Leadership Conference..

Some years ago I wrote CFNY and asked them why they had no streaming. Somebody replied that they just didn't see streaming as viable for the station.

So "Team Corus" paralleled McCain in their acceptance of the Internet. Last time I looked at the "Wolf" website, it was a terrific train wreck. It reminded me of the websites I'd see in 1996 on Geo Cities, not that of an FM station

Careful Fred..sometimes the past (and those of us that lived it) come back to haunt you.

BTW Fred, as I've stated on Quad Cities Radio Forum..the radio industry is 10 years behind in "technology". Nearly ever station I know of STILL doesn't embrace text messaging.

Go point fingers at someone else dude.

Just so you know Irvine, "Team Corus" didn't parallel anyone, McCain's name didn't even come at the conference.
It's a comparison I made after learning what was being done for Obama in Chicago.
I'm not really pointing fingers at anyone, just making an observation.
And by the way, the "Wolf" website which I've been working very hard on for the past six weeks, launches on Tuesday.
But I'm guessing you probably won't like it.

Fred feel free to post these if you find them amusing.
I found the McCain/Palin one on the net and 'shopped the Obama/Biden one.

Well stated Jason. Fred has truly 'drunk the kool aid'. Hopefully its not the same kool aid the followers drunk with Jim Jones back in '78.

Anyway I believe the world is in for a huge surprise after Obama is elected. Putting aside BHO's horrendous stance on abortion issues, we're going to see frequent attacks on America and perhaps Canada from terrorists who don't fear the US anymore now that buddy is leading them. At least with Bush and McCain, you have leaders who are perceived by terrorists as 'crazy' enough to fight back.

I hope I'm wrong but it could be a scary 4 years. People are going to be thinking 'ya know Bush wasn't that bad after all'.

Argie, or maybe the terrorists will have trouble recruiting supporters when the US is seen less as an antagonist.

I think, the only thing time will show of Bush is just how terrible he was, and how he kept arguably the greatest country on the planet from acheiving its potential nationally and internationally.

Joe "The Gaff" Biden said the same thing Argie. Joe thought that telling people Obama would be a crisis magnet would be a selling point. Go figure.

Here's a tip: Fill in your name. Then check the "Remember personal info?" box. Voila. You won't have to enter your name again. PLEASE TRY IT.

Fred:

Radio websites are all templates, just an extension of the cookie cutter mentality that runs the industry. Obviously, from a developer standpoint, they are cheap. But they tend to be static & give people little reason to return (except for news sites, etc).

I agree with Pauly Walnuts. I think that with Obama in office you'll see less attacks. If I walk around my neighborhood acting like a tough guy, chances are..a "tougher" guy will take a shot at me. If I walk around my neighborhood minding my own business, it's most likely that I'll be left alone.

I think where Obama will do well is US foreign relations. I think he'll flunk on the economic side.

Max,

It didn't work for Biden or the McCain campaign but that doesn't mean they will be wrong in their prognostication.

I hope they are.

What's the difference between this:

http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2008/11/01/7271986-sun.html

and what americans are about to do to John Mccain on Tuesday.

Kicked to the curb is right.

We honour their service. Heh. Sure we do.

Non Sibi: Sure buddy, the USA should vote in McCain because he was a POW? As if that's somehow the pre-req for a person to run the worlds most powerful nation

In case you haven't looked, the USA is in serious trouble. It's debt is over 10 trillion, it's got a REAL energy problem that drilling isn't going to fix. It's had to practically nationalize it's entire financial system because of gluttony & the nation is on it's knees ?

But we should vote for McCain because he was a veteran.

I'm not saying Obama has the answers because I don't think he does. I don't think McCain does. What I do think is that Obama MAY think a bit more outside the box..and that's what America needs

If the US goes down brother, the economy of Ontario goes with it. I just live in a place that sells oil to the highest bidder.

Argie, you constantly forget one fact - Bush was in power when the US was attacked! The answer is being pro-active, not re-active.

The September 11th attacks were planned for over two years. Different agencies had different pieces of the puzzle, but weren't allowed by law to share that information.
