And The Loser Is

October 3, 2008 @ 08:16

I'm surprised violence didn't break out during the Canadian election debate last night. While watching, I kept expecting someone to reach across the table and smack Jack Layton upside the head.

Even Elizabeth May, who could probably kick the shit out of all the guys.

Layton was at his "I can't be elected so I'll say all kinds of ridiculous and outrageous things" best.

When you're as much of a flake as Layton is, and you lead Canada's third and not rising political party, you can sit there and say whatever you want and poke holes in everything everybody else has to say.

You can sit there with a smirk on your face and talk about the Prime Minister's love affair with big oil and George Bush and you can tell all kinds of tales about how wonderful the world would be if there were ever enough goombahs to elect you.

To be honest, I have no idea how Stephen Harper would let himself be talked into a debate with this format. As the incumbent, you really can't win. You're under attack constantly but there's really no substance to the attacks and if you don't have a very strong moderator you're cooked.

Harper didn't look very good to me last night, but it could have been a lot worse if the other people around the table had anything to offer. He still came off as the most competent and most rational.

A lot more could have been accomplished if the debate had been more traditional.

Lucky for Harper, Layton is so aggravating; most Canadians probably came away from the debate not thinking about the winner, but rather thinking about the big loser - who was sitting between little Stephane Dion and that wretched, treasonous bastard Gilles Duceppe.

I agree Fred... Layton can say anything he wants because he will never have to prove any of it. Where is the money going to come from with the NDP, is what I would like to know... remember Bob Rae in Ontario, starting with a 3 billion dollar deficit and ending with an 11 billion dollar deficit... how is it that he is not in prison for the rest of his life.

When Layton says he is not going to deal with the boardroom tables of the country and rather he will deal with the kitchen tables... well someone should tell him that there won't be any kitchen tables without the boardroom tables. Every time the CAW cries about job losses in Oshawa they always say that for every 1 person working at GM, there are 10 people employed in the community and they make the equation that the government has to step in and help because it is not only 1000 jobs at GM, it is 10,000 jobs in the community. If Layton kicks all big business in the teeth, those manufacturing facilities will be in Mexico and China by the end of his term.

At least Duceppe knew his reality... when ask what he would do first if he became Prime Minister, he straight up admitted that he does not have a chance to be the next Prime Minister, going on to say that others at the table had no chance either and they are kidding themselves if they thought otherwise. Maybe he is not as dumb as I thought.

You're right on Fred when you say Harper couldn't win in this environment and he did not look good, always on the defense.

It was a bit of a zoo. Paiken did a good job trying to corral people all wanting to speak at the same time.
Harper looked pissed. May was pretty good...now don't take that as pretty!!!!
Duceppe sings one song poorly.
The Stephenator did his best but isn't dynamic. Jack was jack. Harper made a few points.
More lively than the American debate but Palin was cute and lively. Say it isn't so Joe respected her but drove some nails into Macker. She respected him and it was an honourable debate as opposed to ours which seems to be following Toronto's downfall...no class and respect here anymore.

The talk today is all about Harper, Layton, May and Duceppe.

The guy that needed to make the biggest splash was Dion. For the time that I watched, he seemed marginalized in the conversation. Not sure if it was a product of where he was seated or unfortunately for him being weaker than the rest in english.

Last thing I heard this morning on the radio is that Layton probably gained the most votes from the debate, but at the expense of the Liberals, not the Conservatives. Maybe Jack should pull a Bob Rae.

I was surpised at Harper's composure with everyone attackign him... good for him. If it was me, I'd have been at the point of stepping outside with everyone as the table and resolving our differences in a more physical fashion. Hence why I'm not in politics... yet. :)

I can't stand Mr Layton, but I bet his words resonate very well with the general working class.

After all, most of this forum spends it's time whining incessantly about the price of gas and how they're being ripped off....when they have no understanding how of the market works.

I didn't see the debate last night and I'd just like to know if they were asked what kind of animal they would like to be. I'd like to be a fluffy bunny.

October 3, 2008 / 10:10

Since oil supported GW Bush, a Texas Governor to be President the price of oil has gone from about $25 to over $150 a barrel whatever a barrel is. It's now about $100. Market forces at play.
OK, nothing else in 8 yrs had risen 4+ times.
I can't separate GW Bush, the price of oil and thus gas and attacking the 2nd or 3rd largest oil recerves country.

Vote NDP or suffer results
October 3, 2008 / 10:14

It's not about who won the debate but who will do the best for the Canadian people.

Who cares what they were saying, how they presented themselves or whatever, it's all about what they do for us.

It's kinda too bad that whoever votes for liberal get to go under liberal rule and PC voters go under PC rule and so on....

Mr. Ball,
Mr Layton may be a doofus, but the NDP are the only party other than the Conservatives that are expected to benefit from this election (at the Liberals expense). And don't think for a minute that Bob Rae isn't already planning his leadership strategy for the next Liberal convention. I didn't watch the Canadian debate, but the definition of insanity applies to voting in Canada. I do the same thing over and over and continue to expect a different result.
Screw them all.

I'd like to take this opportunity to apologise for voting Libertarian...in Ontario...in 1990. I do have an excuse though. I was much younger and I thought I was voting for the Librarian Party.

Irvine, Layton's words may very well resonate, but his manner will be undoing: he is peculiarly loathsome with his exaggerated speech patterns and phoney accent. He is like some dime-store Barrymore rehearsing his lines in front of a mirror, a shifty-eyed buffoon who all but twirls that Snidely-Whiplash moustache. Only a fool would fall for his over the top schtick...

Mike from Lowville
October 3, 2008 / 11:12

The true winner last night was May and the real loser, as always was Harpo and all his minions. Of and Pam, Snidely had a handlebar mustache and Harpo was the only shifty eyed buffoon in the room. Where's your party platform Mr. Harpo....under your sweater? Only fools vote for a party with NO platform!!

Piss off Irvine. You're just as much of a broken record as your so-called "whiners". Can't you contribute anything else other then telling people how stupid they are?

Hey Irvine. it must be nice to have your life so perfect that you have time to tell everyone else how they should live their lives. Thanks Mr. Perfect.

The biggest loser I saw last night was the Canadian people. The only two leaders that made sense were the Greens and Blok - how scary is that. The other three were like watching my 10 year old soccer team fight for the same ball, then realizing they won’t know what to do with it once they get it.
This election shows how we have to move to the American system, no more minority governments – that is the voting reform we should be fighting for, not what May supports and Ontario and BC proposed in their last elections.

America's #1 capitalist: Warren Buffett

from the Star Oct 3 2008
The fear in the marketplace has allowed Buffett to make several sizable investments over the past month in proven companies that needed cash quickly. And Berkshire, which had $31.2 billion cash on hand at the end of June, was ready to invest because, Buffett says, he always tries to be greedy when others are fearful.
***********************
stock go down he buys then sells when the market forces adjust...who else can do that but George Bush's Billionaire friends.

October 3, 2008 / 12:32

What debate!! That wasn't a debate. If you had wanted to watch a debate you should have turned the American one. There really needs to be changes made to this process in the future. There is nothing to be learned when you have 4 opposition parties gang tackling the leader as we saw last night. This was a joke!! And what the hell was May & Duecepppe doing there anyway.

Hey Mike from Lowville,

If you know ANYTHING at all about federal politics in Canada, you would already know what the Conservatives' platform is. Educate yourself instead of waiting for the parties to spoon feed you. I can think for myself, that's why I'm voting Conservative.

Mike from Lowville
October 6, 2008 / 07:39

Ian S - I forgot, if your a Conservative you ASSUME to be smarter than everyone else. It's a good thing your not an MP under Harpo because he does the thinking for them.

Jack Layton just attacked, with no substansial plan to back up what he was attacking on. I didn't think Elizabeth May was much better and Stehphane Dion was spineless.
Not much to choose from I'm afraid.

October 6, 2008 / 14:38

Mike from Lowville, now you're just blowing smoke out your arse!

Who, besides you, has ever said "if your a Conservative you ASSUME to be smarter than everyone else"?
I also know the difference between "you're" and "your".

Jamie B, does that mean you are(how's that Einstein?)a Liberal? Green? Pinko? By the way, no smoke on me. Mike Harris once hinted the smarter than thou phrase. Oops, sorry he was a Progressive Conservative, different animal.

Jamie B
October 8, 2008 / 09:49

Mike from Lowville, there's more smoke out your a$$!
Harper was never a member of the progressive Conservative party.

He once "hinted" at the phrase? What the hell is that? Show me the quote and the context.
Anything you post is questionable after a statement like that. Try and stick to the facts.
As for being a Liberal, Green or Pinko. I'm not aligned with any party.
I think all the leaders and parties have good and bad points. Except the NDP. There's nothing good about them.

Mike from Lowville
October 8, 2008 / 10:59

Never said Harper was a member of the PC's. Maybe you can learn to read since you spell so well. As for the comment by MIKE HARRIS, I was THERE. Question that? A$$'ole!

Anonymous
October 8, 2008 / 12:36

You where there?
That's great. So we have to rely on your interpretation of what he said because you admit he didn't actually say what you quoted?
Ya, that'll be great!

I see you realize how lame your argument is, you have to resort to name calling.
